The skinny: This is a long Severus/Lily fic series, where Severus Snape has some character growth and he and Lily Evans get to stay together for good, and where their lives are explored in detail (with some exploration for their friends and enemies, too). Featured Topic #3: Snape and Blood Prejudice I felt like writing an essay on this subject, so "Snape and Blood Prejudice" is the next Featured Topic. I think we can all agree that Snape did and said racist things in his youth. So the big question for this topic is: Why? Feel free to answer that question with theories as to what was going on in Snape’s messed up noggin. We aren’t looking for excuses, just explanations. Some sub-questions would be things like: How was Snape’s prejudice formed? What path did it travel? At what points was he a true believer? Exactly how far did he come in getting over blood prejudice (including anti-Muggle prejudice)? How did blood prejudice affect Snape, as a half-blood that was half and half? Feel free to write an essay if there is an aspect of Snape and his relationship with blood prejudice that you would like to explore in detail. My latest essay on the subject will follow this post. You can also read and respond to my first essay on the subject entitled Severus Snape and Prejudice where I presented my theory to answer the question of “why a dirt poor half-blood who was in love with a Muggle-born girl, got involved with a classist pure-blood supremacist movement”, if you like. Also, feel free to rec an essay on the subject or to rec a fic that deals with the subject. Heck, feel free to write a fic that deals with the subject, if you are feeling inspired. Or perhaps do a piece of art. (Maybe a picture of the scene where Snape says “Don’t use that word!” to Phineas Nigellus, if you are looking for something that isn’t so depressing). Mod note: I know this is a topic that has caused much wank in the past, in other corners of Snape fandom, and is not the happiest topic (I’ll try and pick something less intense for the next topic). I think if we can all agree that blood prejudice is a form of racism and that Snape did and said racist things in his youth, we can avoid the wank here. Featured Topic #2: Snape and his appearance (including his hygiene or lack thereof) So, according to canon, Professor Snape is a thin, pale man with sallow, oily skin, greasy black hair that is shoulder-length and hangs in curtains around his face, black eyes that are most often cold and sometimes glittery, uneven yellowish teeth, and a very large hooked nose. Snape greatly resembles his mother, but has his father’s nose. He wears all black during the day (although he did wear green for a Quidditch match, once), and a gray nightshirt at night. Teen and child Snape are all that, minus the often cold eyes and yellowish teeth (neither is attributed to Snape’s younger selves), and with different wardrobes. Both teen and child Snape tended to have more intense eyes, and were described not just as thin, but also stringy. Teen Snape was additionally described as looking “like a plant kept in the dark”, being “round-shouldered yet angular” and walking “in a twitchy manner that recalled a spider.” He was shown at Hogwarts wearing his Slytherin uniform and graying underpants. Child Snape was additionally described as having dirty, poorly cut, overlong hair. His clothes were “so mismatched that it looked deliberate: too short jeans, a shabby, overlarge coat that might have belonged to a grown man, an odd smocklike shirt.” (Petunia thought the shirt looked like it belonged to Snape’s mother.) He was described as looking not well-cared for. I think it’s safe to say that Snape was not well taken care of as a child, and didn’t take very good care of himself as a teen or adult. He was never described as smelling bad, so I assume he took good enough care of himself so that he didn’t stink. And he’s not missing teeth and his breath is never described as bad, so I assume he took care of his teeth enough to avoid those things. I think it’s also safe to say that he probably didn’t eat or sleep properly, as his skin looked consistently dull and unhealthy. Thoughts?
