Why Pumpkin Picking?

Pumpkin picking is a tradition that gets us into the spirit of autumn and Halloween. As well as being a fun day out, you can enjoy the crisp autumn air, and select the perfect pumpkin for your Halloween decorations.

Pumpkin picking is also an engaging way to teach children about agriculture and the importance of supporting local farmers. But most importantly, it’s a fun and memorable experience that brings smiles to everyone’s faces. So, are you ready to embark on your pumpkin-picking adventure in York? Let’s go!

1. Spooktacular at Piglets Adventure Farm

Piglets Adventure Farm, located just outside of York, is known for its annual Pumpkin Festival – known as Sppoktacular in 2025. This event is a must-visit for families looking for a full day of autumnal fun.

The Pumpkin Festival at Piglets Adventure Farm offers a lot of activities that go beyond pumpkin picking. Kids can pick their own pumpkin from Farmer Ed’s pumpkin patch, which has over 10,000 pumpkins in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Once you’ve chosen your pumpkin, head over to the special Pumpkin Carving Tent to carve your pumpkin on-site. This is a fantastic opportunity to get creative and design your unique Halloween masterpiece.

But the fun doesn’t stop there! Visitors can also navigate the Yorkshire’s Gruesome Ghost Trail (I love a corn maze), enjoy the Halloween Disco, and participate in a fancy dress competition. Then you can enjoy the rest of Piglets Adventure Farm! Here you can visit farm animals, take tractor rides to the barn and have lots of fun this Halloween season.

Tickets for the Pumpkin Festival at Piglets Adventure Farm need to be pre-booked online. Last year, ticket are cheaper online, at £16.95 for children (including a pumpkin) and £15.95 for adults. Remember, pumpkin picking is an outdoor activity, so make sure to dress appropriately! It’s open at weekends and daily in late October.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pumpkin Picking in York & North Yorkshire

When is the best time for pumpkin picking in York and North Yorkshire?

I’ve found that the prime pumpkin picking season in York and North Yorkshire runs from late September through Halloween (31st October). Most pumpkin patches I’ve visited open from early October, with peak season being the first three weekends of October and half-term week. I’d recommend visiting in early to mid-October for the best selection of pumpkins, as the larger ones tend to get picked first!

How much does pumpkin picking cost in York?

From my visits to various pumpkin patches around York, I’ve seen prices vary quite a bit. Many farms charge a small entry fee of £2-3 per person plus the cost of your pumpkins (usually £2-8 depending on size). However, I’ve found some brilliant free-entry options like Castle Howard’s pumpkin patch, where you only pay for what you pick. The ticketed events at places like Piglets Adventure Farm cost around £16-17 but include activities and often a pumpkin in the price.

Do I need to book pumpkin picking in advance in York?

This really depends on where you’re planning to go! I always recommend booking ahead for the popular venues like Piglets Adventure Farm, Stockeld Park, and The Web Adventure Park, especially for weekends and half-term. However, many of the traditional pumpkin patches I’ve visited, such as Yorkshire Pumpkins and Bert’s Barrow Farm, operate on a first-come, first-served basis. I’d suggest checking their websites or calling ahead if you’re unsure.

What should I wear for pumpkin picking in North Yorkshire?

Having been pumpkin picking in Yorkshire many times, I can’t stress enough how important proper footwear is! I always wear wellies or sturdy walking boots as the fields can be muddy, especially after October rain. I’d recommend dressing in layers with waterproof jackets, warm jumpers, and bringing gloves. Don’t forget a hat – Yorkshire weather can be unpredictable in autumn! Most farms I’ve visited are outdoors, so dress for the weather.

Are dogs allowed at pumpkin patches in York?

I’ve found that policies vary between different pumpkin patches in York and North Yorkshire. Some farms like Drewton’s and Tickton Farm welcome dogs on leads, whilst others don’t permit them during busy pumpkin picking sessions. I always check with the individual farm before visiting if I’m planning to bring my dog. A few places even run special “dog-friendly” sessions or Halloween events for pets.

Can I bring my own tools for pumpkin picking?

From my experience, most pumpkin patches in North Yorkshire provide everything you need. Many farms pre-cut the pumpkins from the vine for safety reasons, whilst others provide cutting tools or secateurs for you to use. I’ve found that some places like The Balloon Tree even lend you wheelbarrows to transport your pumpkins! I wouldn’t recommend bringing your own sharp tools unless the farm specifically asks you to.

What size pumpkins are available for picking in York?

I’m always amazed by the variety of pumpkins I find at York’s pumpkin patches! Most farms I’ve visited grow everything from tiny decorative pumpkins perfect for table displays to massive carving pumpkins weighing several stone. The Balloon Tree, for example, has their special varieties like the bright white “Polar Bear” pumpkins and tiny “Spitfire” ones. If you’re looking for specific sizes, I’d suggest calling ahead or visiting early in the season for the best selection.

Are there facilities like toilets and refreshments at pumpkin patches?

Most of the established pumpkin picking venues I’ve visited in North Yorkshire have good facilities. Places like Piglets Adventure Farm, Stockeld Park, and The Balloon Tree have toilets, cafés, and farm shops. However, some of the smaller, traditional pick-your-own farms might have more basic facilities. I always check their websites beforehand, and I’d recommend bringing a flask of hot chocolate and some snacks if you’re visiting a more rural location.

Can I carve pumpkins at the pumpkin patches?

I love that many pumpkin patches in York now offer on-site pumpkin carving! Piglets Adventure Farm has a dedicated carving tent, and Stockeld Park runs carving workshops in their marquee. Some farms provide the tools and templates, whilst others charge a small additional fee for the carving experience. If you’re planning to carve on-site, I’d suggest bringing wet wipes and spare clothes for the children – it can get rather messy!

Is pumpkin picking suitable for young children and buggies?

I’ve taken young children pumpkin picking many times around York, and most farms are very family-friendly. However, accessibility varies – some fields can be quite muddy and uneven, making buggies challenging. The more established venues like Piglets Adventure Farm and Stockeld Park tend to have better paths and facilities for families with young children. I’d recommend checking with the farm about buggy access, especially if you’ll need to walk far into the fields.

What happens if it rains during my pumpkin picking visit?

Yorkshire weather can be unpredictable in October! Most pumpkin patches I’ve visited continue operating in light rain, but they may close in severe weather for safety reasons. I always check the farm’s social media on the day of my visit for any weather-related updates. Some venues like Stockeld Park have indoor activities you can enjoy if the weather turns nasty. My advice is to dress appropriately and embrace the muddy adventure – some of my best pumpkin picking memories have been on drizzly Yorkshire days!

Not this year though, as, the same as in the last years, I’m starting my studies and I don’t have the time and inclination. It would have been different if I was at home though.
