I'm not trying to be a downer, I promise. It's just that I kind of still remain on the fence about whether I actually want more Good Omens, and the production things that come out haven't made me more positive. To be clear none of these are actually spoilers, but I'll put them behind a cut anyway.
The biggest, however, is that season 2 is NOT the novel Gaiman plotted out with Pratchett, but instead something totally new that would act as a bridge to a 'hypothetical' season 3, which WOULD be the novel Gaiman plotted out with Pratchett. I suppose my greatest fear is that we get a season 2 and not a season 3 and we never get the thing that was actually plotted as a sequel. Though I'm also kind of assuming that since Amazon ordered season 2 as soon as season 1 was done, that season 3 is already in the bag, though they can't announce it yet. Still, part of me also goes "but do you really have enough material for two more seasons? what's wrong with just doing one? more isn't always better."
So, we have that season 2 isn't the already plotted sequel. Fine. I guess.
Then we have that Gaiman will only be cowriting the scripts, instead of writing them. Sorry, I don't care how good the other writer is, I think part of what made the show work so well was that it was an author basically doing their book, but for TV. It was less an adaptation, and more a translation.
Then we have that Gaiman is showrunning both Good Omens and Anansi Boys, which are in production at the same time. Look, I know these are both miniseries, but I've seen what happens when showrunners are stretched too thin and overseeing multiple projects.
Then we have that Gaiman is doing part of this from New Zealand digitally, and isn't even on set overseeing the production, though he was at the beginning.
Then we have the announcement that besides the cowriter, there are three other 'mini writers' who are writing historical flashbacks with Aziraphale and Crowley. And I know whatever they do has to be Gaiman approved, but it's not the same.
None of these things is inherently bad by themselves, but when you add them all up, I just wonder if things will... not be as good.
(Also, I kind of hate that Covid has happened in the Good Omens universe.)
And it's not like I'm a book purist or anything! The episode 3 cold open and the added end to episode 6 were my favorite things! But they also came straight out of Gaiman's head. And I know the other angels weren't in the book, and Gaiman has said he borrowed them from the plotted sequel, so there are a lot of elements in season 1 that are ready to be expanded on. But part of what I think I liked so much about season 1 was that it was *very* Gaiman and you could see his handwriting all over it. And I'll be honest, part of what I liked was that it was perfect, and a closed canon, and you could imagine it going anywhere you liked after the ending. I've just had too many things 'ruined' for me where the more we got, the more OOC it seemed, or things contradicted each other, or things didn't make sense. And while I agree that's less likely to happen on what's basically a miniseries, I still kind of worry, especially since it seems like it's going to stretch to three seasons. But one of the things that made me less apprehensive when s2 was announced was the knowledge that even though the book hadn't been written, it was based on the book Pratchett and Gaiman had discussed.
Why couldn't we just have the plotted sequel, have Gaiman write it and be done?
I could dig up sources for any of these if you really want to know, but as it is right now, I'm not going to go through tumblr trying to find whatever random asks each of these were mentioned in.

I mean, I guess it's possible that it actually did, and if they had worked on it longer they would have realized that, and are only realizing it now. But it smells a bit too much like a Hobbit-esque cash grab.

The explanation I saw him give in some tumblr post was basically that the sequel was too similar, and might feel repetitive, so they would need another story in between those two. But part of me is just over here going, "give the people what they want!! they want more of the first thing but just slightly different!"
Though weirdly, I don't think it's a cash grab. I just think it has the potential to be badly done.
