E-book: Multi-author memoir on the rise of gay genre fiction, including erotic fiction [Sep. 21st, 2013|06:17 pm]

Cover for 'Fan Fiction Fan'

A decade before e-books and self-publishing shook up the publishing industry, an author faced a dilemma: When you've written stories in a genre that is rarely published, what do you do?

At the beginning of 2002, Dusk Peterson (a journalist, history writer, and aspiring professional novelist) stumbled across the fan fiction community, where tens of thousands of readers and writers enjoyed gay genre fiction, which publishers rarely published.

Peterson's Muse didn't want to write fan fiction. That didn't matter. Gleefully, Peterson began posting male/male stories with original fantasy settings and characters to "slash" fan fiction e-mail lists, at the same plunging into fanficcers' world of online fiction, "songvids," conventions, celebrations of movie premieres, and endless discussions of literature, history, sexuality, and ethics. In the process, Peterson became part of a community that was taking advantage of the Internet's power in order to distribute stories, art, and videos that couldn't be professionally published.

This first volume in the Pixel-Stained series includes reminiscences, stories, and art from yaoi author/artist mdbl; Steve Berman, founder of the gay and lesbian speculative fiction publishing company Lethe Press; J. M. Snyder, founder of the queer fiction press JMS Books; and m/m romance author Emily Veinglory.

"I can't figure out why my characters get the yen to stop in the middle of having hot sex in order to discuss the moral implications of what they're doing. I certainly never did anything stupid like that. (Alas.)"

Here's a list of the new stories I've posted online or published as e-books in the past two years - mainly gay, though some of the stories include heterosexual content (I've marked those as heterosexual) or are about friendship (I've marked those as "general"). They're works of fantasy, historical fantasy, and contemporary fiction which feature:

* gods, priests, and mortals
* rulers and subjects
* lords and liegemen/liegewomen
* mentors and proteges
* masters, servants, and slaves
* dominants and submissives
* torturers, guards, and prisoners
* soldiers and spies
* college students

Not all at once, of course. :)

All of the stories feature love or respect, though sometimes it takes a while to get there. I've included the ratings, so that you can tell which stories have mature content. I also have a bunch of older stories that I haven't listed here. To see them all, you can visit my home page or simply click on the links to the series pages below. If you want to, you can Friend my blog or sign up for my updates e-mail list.

The Eternal Dungeon, a historical fantasy series on gay D/s love in a Victorian prison, has proved to be the most popular series I've written. Its omnibus e-book received three honors in the Rainbow Awards 2011, including winning the Best Gay Fantasy category.

The Eternal Dungeon is ten years old this year. I'm in the midst of bringing out new stories in the series. If you've never read The Eternal Dungeon, then you can start here, with a couple of free stories that introduce the main characters in the series:

The Unanswered Question. No weapons, no allies, and no guarantees that he will survive the test.

The Breaking. The prisoner knew that the Eternal Dungeon was a place where suspected criminals were broken by torture, and he was prepared to hold out against any methods used against him – except the method he could not anticipate.

Edgeplay in Mayhill (serialized gay M/s novel) [Jun. 8th, 2010|03:14 am]

In 1965, Loren was initiated into the mysteries of leather by a motorcyclist passing through his isolated Midwestern town. Twenty years later, he is owner of the town's gay bar, which serves as a leather bar after hours. He is a master, trained to control and discipline men.

If only he could convince other leathermen of this fact. Having given up hope of ever finding someone who will submit to him, Loren is forced to content himself with secret fantasies. Then he meets the perfect man for his fantasies: handsome, uniformed, full of confidence and strength. But Loren doesn't realize that Ken holds secrets which will initiate them both into a new mystery. . . .

Leather life in a rural town is explored in this series, which looks back on an earlier era. In a time and place where being gay is reason enough to be arrested, the leathermen of Mayhill struggle to keep their small community alive.

(Weekly notices of new chapters will be posted at my blog.)

From the back came a quiet voice. "The master makes the slave happy."

Cover for Pleasure

Egon had a position that won him respect, friends who raised his spirits, and lovers who gave him pleasure. Then a man came into his life who would take all that away from him. If Egon was lucky.

Note: This is an expanded version of my 2003 novella; Chapter Five is new.

Halvar leaned forward; his eyes were the color of an arctic sky. "I am not a fool, Egon," he said softly, "so do not treat me as such."
