Getting back underwater
Hello! This is a bit of an odd post... it's about diving again after a longish break. I had a car crash last year, and that meant my Tauchtauglichkeit (something like diving fitness) expired, so no diving since. Last week I got my Tauchtauglichkeit exam done and YAY! can go diving again. Because of the long break I booked teacher guided dives - at Dive4LIfe and - Tauchcenter Nullzeit*pokes link* sorry, does not seem to work... http://www.tobiasvahs.de/html/tauchcenter_nullzeit_fotobegle.htmlJust thought it might be interesting to other divers... | | Thursday, September 1st, 2011 | 7:25 am [beastly82]

Please help save our sharks (and our oceans!)
This is a bit long, but I hope you will have a few minutes to read it and take action. For those of you who are not yet aware, the State of California is on the verge of making an incredible difference in the conservation of endangered species and the preservation of our oceans. A landmark bill, AB376, which would ban the possession, sale, and trade of shark fins in California, has been approved by the governor and the State Assembly, and goes to the State Senate for a final vote on Tuesday, June 28th. This bill is so important because many sharks are on the verge of extinction. Populations of large sharks have plummeted 95-99% worldwide in the last two decades. Currently, of the 300+ shark species, 50 species are listed as being at high risk of extinction (either Critically Endangered, Endangered, or Vulnerable), and another 63 shark species are approaching threatened status (either Conservation Dependent or Near Threatened). One of the reasons sharks are so in danger is because of shark finning, the wasteful and barbaric practice of slicing the fins off an often still-living shark, then tossing the animal back into the ocean for it to slowly die. It is estimated that at least 73 million sharks are killed for their fins every year (about 100 sharks will die as you read this email message). The fins are used as a tasteless thickening ingredient for shark fin soup, an ingredient that could easily be replaced with a much more sustainable substitute. It is thought that serving and eating shark fin soup bestows good fortune and virility, but ironically sharks (as well as other marine apex predators) have such high levels of mercury, PCBs, and other toxins that eating them is dangerous to one's health. Since California is such a large consumer of shark fins, and since ~85% of fin imports come through our state, this ban would have a huge impact on the number of sharks killed. Hawaii, Washington, and Oregon, as well as other countries, already have similar bans in place, but the opposition to the California ban is strong (certain importers stand to lose money, and are therefore pressuring lawmakers). We can help push our ban through by contacting the California Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Water before June 28 and telling them you support AB376, the Shark Fin Ban. California Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Water: Fran Pavley, Chair Agoura Hills, District 23 (916) 651-4023 Doug LaMalfa, Vice Chair Richvale, District 4 (916) 651-4004 Christine Kehoe San Diego, District 39 (916) 651-4039 Lois Wolk Davis, District 5 (916) 651-4005 Noreen Evans Santa Rosa, District 2 (916) 651-4002 Joe Simitian Palo Alto, District 11 (916) 651-4011 Alex Padilla Pacoima-LA County, District 20 (916) 651-4020 Anthony Cannella Ceres, District 12 (916) 651-4012 Jean Fuller Bakersfield, District 18 (916) 651-4018 For more information, and to see the arguments for supporting the ban, please go to: http://sharksavers.org/en/blogs/760-update-california-assembly-bill-ab-376.htmlTHANK YOU! | | Wednesday, September 29th, 2010 | 8:01 pm [openidwouldwork] |

Snorkeling is hard!!!
I just got back from a dolphin field study in the Bahamas. For whatever reason, the protocol was to observe the dolphins by snorkeling rather than diving! I feel that I'm a pretty competent diver, but between the waves, the currents, and occasionally ending up underneath the boat- there were at least two times during the trip where I momentarily thought I might drown while snorkeling. I miss the calm of being under the surface- diving is so much easier!! Anyway, here's my attempt to take footage while being tossed around, I thought you guys might enjoy it regardless that my camera doesn't do HD... | | Sunday, August 22nd, 2010 | 6:26 pm [openidwouldwork] |

How do you go about... kicking?
Kicking... I use a very pronounced frog-kick, but then over here you get lynched if you stir up the sediment (and ruin vis for everyone else). How about you? Current Mood: curious | | Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010 | 12:10 pm [shunhuggedme]

HII
Hi there! I'm new to diving (new as in, I haven't finished my certification yet :P) annnd I wanted to ask an opinion of some veteran divers who don't own a shop and try to pressure me into buying things I don't need! I live in Central Florida. I recently went to Blue Grotto to dive and it was 72 degrees, REALLY COLD, and I kind of figure I don't want to really do cold water diving much. I am not up for traveling to dive, and being in Florida - I think I can get away without having to leave the state :p So, about wet suits! If most of my dives are going to be in the ocean and around the keys, will I really need one? I'm going to Key Largo over Labor Day weekend to finish my certification and my instructors have told us we wont' need one because the water is going to be VERY warm; but I'm wondering about if I continue to dive locally (St Pete or Clearwater, for example) is there a real 'need' of one? I'm currently renting all equipment, trying to find what I like and what fits before I make any commitment to buying, but the wetsuit is up in the air. I had to use one at Blue Grotto and I uhhh didn't enjoy the experience, I'll say :p The rental had some 'pooches' around I couldn't do anything about, and it leaked like crazy and didn't do a ton of good - but it was a rental, so what can I say.... Any advice or suggestions? (I'm also a little on the heavy side, female, 5'5, and 200 lbs, so if a wet suit is deemed a good purchase, can anyone point me to some good suits for a decent price?) | | Sunday, August 1st, 2010 | 3:54 pm [openidwouldwork] |

So what gear does everyone use?
OpenIDwouldwork was talking about packing gear so it got me to wondering what does every one use? Heres mine; BCD- Sea Quest Pro QD Fins-Sea quest Thruster Mask-Aqua Lung Reg-Sherwood Blizzard Octo-ProSub wetsuit-El Cheapo off brand(gift) boots-Deep Sea gauges-Dacor My husband has all the fancy gear and computers, Hes one who spent a lot on his stuff(3,000+). Me, I'm proof you don't have to spend a fortune to dive. All my equipment I got for under 630.00. | 12:30 pm [openidwouldwork] |
The newbie again... I must say I've only been here a few days and I have already noticed a lot of surprising things and different approaches to diving; I thought it might be interesting to not only write about where one dives but also what equipment is used and how you go about it in general. As I'm off to Austria - mountain lake and river diving - I was packing my tub and thought it might be interesting to take pics? ATTN: scuba diving students
Amazon is offering a free 1 year subscription to Amazon Prime (Which usually costs $79 a year. Perks include free 2 day shipping, and $3.99 overnight shipping): http://amzn.to/bSH8jP (url shortened with bit.ly) This is being marketed towards college students but all you need is a valid .edu email address, so teachers and alumni might be able to benefit from this too (though the Terms of Service does say they have the right to ask for proof that you are a current student). I apologize if you have already heard about this amazing deal. I just want to help spread the word on this before they stop offering it. I am not an employee of Amazon, nor do I gain anything from people signing up for this service. | | Sunday, July 18th, 2010 | 10:44 am [openidwouldwork] |

Beaver Lake, Arkansas
Hi there! I haven't posted in quite a while, but I moved from the Gulf coast back "home" to Missouri about a year ago, and finally got around to getting involved with my local dive club. Last weekend, we dove at Beaver Lake in Arkansas (near Eureka Springs); there were about 22 of us. This is really the first freshwater diving I've done, and the furthest north I've ever dived...prior to this it was all down in Florida or over in Texas. The viz was quite nice, and I finally figured out how to get my camera to white balance under water, so I thought I'd share! This was our dive boat, the "floating carport", as one of the ladies' put it: ( More back here!Collapse ) | | Monday, July 12th, 2010 | 12:38 am [openidwouldwork] |
