I am in the process of writing a ficlet and am curious about a few things; don’t think me stupid for asking them I just want to be thorough.

Assuming Merlin is set somewhere between the 7th and 10th centuries and Catholicism would be prominent in Britain, would that mean that Cardinals would have been appointed? If so, how many would there be in Britain?

How much knowledge, would say Uther have of Europe’s geography? Obviously they would be aware of Rome and Jerusalem but I am thinking mainly of France and Spain. How much trade would have occurred between countries? Would Uther ever visit Europe?

Any answers would be greatly appreciated so thank you,

Alison

In the process of writing a Merlin (BBC) fanfic, I compiled a list of resources that I thought might be useful to other writers in the fandom. There are links to information on the Arthurian legends, Britain in the Dark Ages, everyday life in the Middle Ages, lists of Arthurian names, and all kinds of things that a fanfic writer in the Merlin fandom might find useful. I'm also looking for suggestions of what to add to the list.

Since that time of the year is upon us, and more than a few of us (myself included) are writing Yuletide Merlin fics I thought this would be a great time and place to ask this question.

Does anyone out there know of any reliable places on the interwebs to find and research Yule traditions from the 6th century? My own google-fu has thus far failed me with this one and it would be nice to be able to be fairly accurate about such things when I write them.

Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions!

Yup. This post does exactly what it says on the tin.

The greatest trouble for me when reading and writing Merlin fic is finding the best terms for genitalia. So many words just seem overly crude and modern to feel right. Others feel too trashy romance novel. What are the terms you prefer to use/read in medieval fic?

Im particularly looking for alternate words for penis, vagina and clitoris though other body part words are welcome too!

PS; Mods I haven't tagged this as there aren't any appropriate tags for questions/discussions yet. Sorry!

Genres willing to beta: Most, really. I prefer het and femmeslash, but I'll also beta slash if your fic is interesting. Also, I prefer beta'ing dramatic pieces although, again, I'd give comedic pieces a chance.
Genres unwilling to beta: Slash (just a personal preference, although if you've worked with me before, I could do it).
Pairings willing to beta: All femslash and het pairings (and I do mean all. I'm not very picky). I'd be OK with a slash pairing in a secondary role.
Pairings unwilling to beta: Slash pairings, unless, again, I've worked with you before
Ratings: I'd rather not beta NC-17 work, although I'd give it a go if I'd beta'd several of your fics before.
Length: Any length, really.
Beta strengths: I've been told that I'm good at pinpointing exactly what's wrong with the flow of a sentence. In addition, I like to focus on characterization and prose.
Beta weaknesses: I have a tendency to nit-pick. Sometimes I think I'm a bit too subjective in my critiques.
Additional info: Some days I'll really need to focus on my schoolwork, so I might be erratic. However, if I can't get to your fic within a few days, I'll let you know.

Genres willing to beta: Most, actually. Preferably gen/character studies/UST/femmeslash/adventure.
Genres unwilling to beta: BDSM, Mpreg (as I can't read with a serious beta face, that's all), threesomes and RPS.
Pairings willing to beta: Gwen/Morgana, Morgana/Merlin, Gwen/Arthur, Arthur/Merlin mostly.
Pairings unwilling to beta: Gaius/Uther. And any pairing involving the dragon.
Ratings: All is fine.
Length: Anything upto about 10,000 words otherwise time is an issue for me.
Beta strengths: Grammar, characterisation, plot continuity.
Beta weaknesses: Knowing all the legend variations.
Additional info: May be slow at replying during weekdays.

This community is intended to help all you Merlin writers with anything that may ail you during the writing process. Consider this community a remedy for all ill fic.

Have a question about sharpening swords? Confused over whether Morgana's eyes are green or blue? Need someone to dispense wisdom about your plot à la Slash Great Dragon style? Then here is where you can do it.

Enjoy yourselves, keep curious, and do please read the community rules before posting.
