12th-Dec-2005 08:23 am - final words
Ashes of students
OK, all...first of all, the housekeeping details:

The research projects are not quite done. All of the Tues-Thurs class are done, but the MW won't be ready for pick up until tomorrow. I'll leave them in the English department office for you (Flagler 224) to pick up there.

Second: what to do with the LiveJournal?? Some of you really got into your personal LJs, and that's great. They're your accounts; if you want to keep using them, you should do so. If you're bored with your personal LJ, just delete it. Easy. :) I'll keep mine active, as I always do--those of you friended to that account will remain friended unless you ask to be removed. OK?

The LiveJournal community we have for class will remain up since I don't like deleting entire communities, and if you want to continue posting there feel free! It would be nice to see continuity there. Obviously I won't be leading any discussions or anything, but there were some good exchanges happening in the community from time to time, and when you feel the urge to say something, you should say it.

Third: Now that the term is over (and you've survived all your finals, I think), I wish you a happy winter break. Get some rest. Come back strong. Good luck on classes next term!
5th-Dec-2005 08:51 pm - Boredom
Pink Floyd
Ok so i was doing my usual messing around on the internet, and i cam across this picture on collegehumor. For those of you who are in my class (T, TH at 2:30) and thought the picture of the guy on steroids was buff check this guy out. It brings "buff" to a new meaning. http://www.collegehumor.com/pictures/42616/ Which leads me to my next question, do you think it is necessary to be that built, or even slightly "jacked" which if you dont know, is more built than a normal person should be.
5th-Dec-2005 02:48 pm - Denver makes it legal
Peppermint
I'm not sure if anyone has heard, but they have legalized marijuana in Denver, Colorado recently, making Denver the second (not sure what the first is, can't seem to find it) in the United States to do so. There are some specifications on age requirements and amounts, but certain aspects of this issue are not being addressed. You must be 21 and have no more than an ounce, but they don't mention how persons should legally obtain marijuana! It seems odd for getting it to be illegal but now possessing or using it? Here's an article I found about it, but there are many of them out there if you want to read more! What do you guys think about this? Do you feel the same way about the comparisons between alcohol consumption and the legalizing of marijuana? This may be a step towards nationally legalizing pot, and it could therefore impact us in the somewhat near future! What do you think???

after reading about the Homolka i must say that it is one of the most disturbing things i have ever heard. I dont think i could even think of somethinig so sick. And so to say the least i think it is a crime within itself to allow this woman to be freed without any restrictions what so ever. I dont know all the details about how she assisted her husband, but even so it is ridiculous that Canada would allow the woman to go free like that without any restrictions. I almost hope that this woman commits a crime again just so canada can see what a stupid desciion they made about letting her be free of any type of restriction
4th-Dec-2005 06:19 pm - Riddle
kristen
In case your bored and feel like getting frustrated (because believe me, you will), try this riddle. Leave me a comment if you want the answer:

"Two men go and buy a TV for $50...they split the cost, so they each paid $25

The salesperson then realizes that the TV was supposed to be on sale for $45, so she goes to refund the extra $5 to the two men

However, the dishonest sales person keeps $2 for herself...thus she refunds $3 to the two men (or $1.50 each)

So...the men have paid a combined $47 ($23.50 + $23.50) and the salesperson kept $2.
$47 + $2 = 49....where'd the last dollar go?"
2nd-Dec-2005 10:27 am - HAPPY HOLIDAYS
me
So with the holiday break coming up, I was wondering if anyone had anything exciting planed for the break. I know personally that its hard to think about the break with exams coming up next week, but I just thought I'd throw the thought out. I hope everyone has a happy holiday.
1st-Dec-2005 05:26 pm - Conclusion
Run.
Alright tuesday/thursday classes...how does it feel to finally be done with these things? Just think, we've spent over two months on this one single paper.

How does it feel to finally turn in the final copy and be done with it? I know I feel relieved, although am on pins and needles about what grade I will recieve.

Oh, and I sincerely apologize for my presentation. It was entirely too long, and well...boring. I could tell with every slide most of you were probably like "when is he going to stop?" So...yeah, next time I do a presentation, I'll try to make things simpler (like standardized tests do to education...). Right, I'll shut up now.
1st-Dec-2005 02:08 pm - World AIDS day
Ashes of students
It's World Aids Day. Go here and light a virtual candle. For every candle lit, a dollar will be donated to AIDS research. Considering how many millions have died and will continue to die from AIDS, one dollar isn't enough, but it's a damn sight better than ignoring the problem.

You have to wait while it goes through its animation thing. :-)
1st-Dec-2005 01:47 pm - serial killers, and so forth
Ashes of students
I complain to myself every once in a while that America is eroding, and fast, under the Bush administration (you know--trampling of civil liberties, alienation of the rest of the globe, religious intolerance blah blah), but I'm going to quit saying, even jokingly, that I should move to Canada.

Do you guys know who Karla Homolka is? I don't use the term "depraved" easily, but I think she is the poster child for the concept. She helped her husband rape and murder several young women, among them Homolka's own younger sister (who choked on her own vomit while Homolka's husband filmed his rape of her). She's one of Canada's most notorious killers (back story here, and here, but be warned if you're easily nauseated), she served 12 years, and now she's out. And not only is she out, but today a judge lifted all restrictions on her activities.

Even while admitting that Homolka might reoffend, the judge says she can now have unsupervised contact with children under 16, can contact the parents of her victims, and can basically live as if nothing ever happened.

Wow. I have to say, if I were the parent of a minor child living anywhere Quebec, I would be seriously worried.

What do you folks think about this case?
29th-Nov-2005 08:33 pm - Smoking
kristen
Lately, I have been wondering why people smoke. It is proven that it kills you and causes a plethora of diseases. However, I see people my age and younger picking up the habit. If there is a warning on the box that says it causes cancer, why even touch the stuff? Can't something else be used as an outlet besides cigarettes? I have heard stories about how hard it is to quit, so why do it? It's not like the 60's and 70's when the health consequences weren't known and it was "cool". It just amazes me.
