Bell Orchestre - Recording A Tape The Colour Of The Light (my review of the album) [Nov. 17th, 2005|11:00 am]

1. (Recording A Tunnel (The Horns Play Underneath The Canal):

Very brief but beautiful french horns! I see a crisp, cold, and clear morning with the first sunlight just starting to peak over the horizon.

2. Les Lumieres Pt. 1:

Beautiful muted and unmute trumpets as well as french horn and glockenspiel (or some other bells). Very sombre. The violin is also gorgeous and sounds somewhat sad. The bass sounds like a heartbeat. This is a very human song about the very basics of life, blood, hormones, emotion. I love the interplay of voices like mixed emotions or a conflict between several different personalities. The tension builds throughout the song. I'm not sure what to think when things start to fall apart and you hear things breaking and crumbling but it sounds like violence.

3. Les Lumieres Pt. 2:

This song is really moving! It sounds frenetic. I see a cartoon character running at a normal pace but passing through a city and countryside much faster than normal. Eyes wide, running for its own sake rather than trying to get anywhere in particular. I love the drums, guitars, trumpets and violins.

4. Throw It On A Fire:

Clapping, sirens, dancing, drums, french horn. It sounds like someone's on a rescue mission. Either that or this is about people marching together and standing up against an unjustice. There is resolution at the end. I see people holding each other and crying.

5. Recording A Tunnel (The Horns Play Underneath The Canal):

This one is also pretty. It doesn't really go anywhere. I see it as sitting on the deck of s ship in the dark with the cold night air and only the moonlight as illumination. You can see your breath.

6. The Upwards March:

The beginning sounds like a steam train. I can definitely hear the march in this one, especially the drums in the background. The violin and french horn also give it that feel even though those probably aren't traditionally march instruments. I love how this one builds. Sort of an abrupt ending, but it leads right into the next song...

7. The Bells Play The Band:

I like the howling wind noise in the background. I'm also hearing some buzzing but I'm not sure if that's just my player or what. This one is very short and simple. It really seems like more of an ending to #6.

8. Recording A Tape...(Typewriter Duet):

It's very creative to make a song and use an old typewriter as one of the instruments. I love how they take advantage of both the pecking as well as the end-of-line bell and carriage return sounds. The upright bass and plucking violin or cello are nice too. The accordion sounds eerie!

9. Nuevo:

This one is a bit jazzy. I like how it starts out soft with just one violin being plucked and then two and then adds I guess an accordion, upright bass, and french horn. It gets faster and more complex as the song develops. It's exciting when the snare drum and cymbals come in. I guess that's a cello that sounds sort of asian? The whistles at the end aren't very nice. They have that eerie sound too.

10. Salvatore Amato:

This one starts out gorgeous with that old whirlitzer (sp?) or whatever sound. I like how it quickly builds with the drums and trumpet. The bells remind me of Sigur Ros and Amina. I like this one a lot.

11. Recording A Tunnel (The Invisible Bells):

Okay now this one really sounds like you're sitting in a subway station and listening to the trains going past. It still has that really icy cold, middle-of-the-night sound to it. It sounds so sad and lonely, especially the french horn. Okay one complaint...I'm annoyed that every band thinks they have to have the last track on the album with several minutes of silence in the middle. That was cool the first time someone did it but now that everyone does it, it's not cool anymore. Anyway, after the silence is a nice section with those really warm drums, tympany, I guess? Also, horns that sound like a ship lost at sea in the fog. This is a nice section.

Okay, so in summary, this album strikes me as very much like a movie score. I love movie scores so I'm okay with that. It's all instrumental and has a lot of moody songs that evoke a lot of imagery for me. There are a few aspects that remind me of Radiohead and Sigur Ros but mostly they've got their own sound. I love the combination of instruments and, just like Arcade Fire, they use a lot of different instruments and each has an important and distinct voice. Though some sections rock, I wouldn't call this a rock and roll album at all. I also wouldn't call it classical. The closest thing I can think of is a film score even if there isn't a film to go along with this music.
