I think that the greatest thing i learn in this class is to read and think rhetorically. without taking this class, i will not able to think about the issues that are important and close-related to me. each essays help me to express myself clearly in writing and help me to learn how to convince others with my opinions. i wouldn't say that writing an essay is an easy task for me. there are times when i was frustrated by having to rephrase an awkwardedly phrase sentence. i also learn how to think logically. in order to persuade my readers (and to get a decent grade :P), i need to think logically and present to them in a sorta professional manner. I learn a lot of vocabs when i need to find synonyms for my essays. I have to say that the joy of finally finding a way to present my idea is hard to described.

i believe that being taught to think rhetorically will help me in advocating issues in Rhetoric II. I am not sure what speech in Rhetoric II will be like but i know that Rhetoric I has helped me to stand in front of others and talk. In all, this class has been a course for me.

After finishing "the alchemist", i started a book called "Buddhism: The awakening of Compassion and Wisdom". I got it at the bus stop near my apartment, both in English and Chinese. Somebody put those books there a long time ago, people pick it up and turn it back occatoinally.

Last year, aftering reading serveral chapters of Bible, I thought I won't read any religious books, because it takes a long time committment, and you have to keep a sincerse heart all the time. But, for some reason, I couldn't help to take this buddhism book home---for curiosity.

because of my crazy final schedule, I only read several pages. The book is very peaceful, and I can feel I would finally get something from this book. the beginning is " remember the kindness of other: repay the kindness with gratitude", which moved me a lot recently.

Hopefully I could finish this book in summer.

I know that I improve somewhat on speeches and the weakness that I keep working on is writing. I can't wait for the speeches assignments in 10:002. I can't wait to get in front of the class. This semester has improve my fear of speaking in front of a class. I'm not looking forward to do all the writing assignments because I am not very good at it, but I am willing to work to improve it.

finally, this is the last one. since i have read "bridget jone's dairy" through almost the whole semester. i decide to end with that.
Bridget is still alone, but she isn't not desperate to wait for daniel any more.she has her own wonderful life with her friends and her family. she kind of stop messaging deniel from lots of times very little time.
from her story, i kind of know girls shouldn't rely on boys to much. otherwise, they gonna be more cocky and treat girls bad.

It's over...its all over! I guess all good things have to come to an end eventually and I'm afraid this does too. Over the semester, I have learned a lot in Rhetoric. English, being my second language, I have had the opportunity to continue learning more and more. I finally learned how to properly write a thesis statement. My introduction in my essays have improved by leaps and bounds. I was incorrectly taught the proper way to write my introduction. All my teachers in grade school told me that I should just say what I will talk about in the paper during the introduction. In Rhetoric I learned that I should actually list some of those points and just in great depth talk about it in my paper. That means that when someone reads your introduction, they should know everything about your paper - no surprise packages. I guess it is similar to reading a story in the newspaper. In a big article, if you read the first couple of paragraphs, you will know the entire content of the paper.

I liked the diversity we had in our classroom. So many people who came up in different back rounds made it interesting when they were writing their essays and giving speeches. It definitely added variety to the class that many other classes in college lack. Rhetoric was definitely my favorite class because I knew my teacher, she knew me, I knew all my classmates - something that I cannot say about any of my other class in college and probably something I cannot say in any classes throughout my college career.

I don't necessarily know what will be different about Rhetoric 2, so I cannot comment on what I may be surprised by. I think that I will just take it as another class. Writing does not come easy to me - it is something that I have to work extremely hard at. So I know that if i put in the time and effort, I should be okay

SSR [May. 1st, 2007|08:09 pm]

The SSR has been really good for me because it got me back to reading books. I will be the first to admit about my disappointment when I learned that we had to read and blog. What happened to me was that I stopped reading after about my junior year of my high school. The only time I read was when I had free time in Study halls in high schools. Ever since college started, my first semester of college has been extremely busy. I was involved in a lot of organizations, worked, and on top of that the primary reason - school! With all that going on, I ended up spending very little time reading last semester, so it was good to get back to it.

The final SSR book I read was back to the Ashes book. The story continued and I am at a point where England were up 2-1 with the last test to be played. england have played well, but the Aussies who are the number one team by far can come back any time. Duncan Fletcher and many of the media are pointing out the irony behind McGrath's injury. Isn't it funny that the two tests McGrath did not play, England win and the matches he played (up to the fifth test), the Aussies won 1 and tied 1. A lot of people (negative people, people who downplay the sport during the good times) started saying it was a conspiracy that England won. They stated that the ICC (the governing cricket body) wanted England to win so they can dominate the back pages of the newspapers in England - take some shine away from football. It was funny that even David Beckham, who publicly stated that he isn't fond of cricket...now stated that he was a fan of the game!

My final blog… Well I have to say that I enjoyed this class. I liked the casual atmosphere in the classroom, and I thought that the diversity was awesome. As far as the course work was concerned, I enjoyed doing the speeches although the first was a bit shaky. The essays were laid out very well so I had no problem writing, and overall it was a pleasurable experience. I hope my 10:002 class is just as fun. Laters everyone… see you around campus.

It is so weird that this will be my final SSR Blog. In total I read four books, and that is more than I have read put together in the last five years. I don’t know why, but I have never really been the type to just grab a “good book” and start reading. I am more active I guess and don’t really see sitting around reading as something that would be fun. Well I got lucky in choosing a few good books to read and found out that it wasn’t so painful. I like the idea of SSR because just casual reading has improved my comprehension of text book material. Plus, it has improved my reading ability, so all in all I liked doing the reading and the blogs weren’t too bad either.

When I came into this class, I had not written a paper, read a book, or done a homework assignment in 4 years. The homework assignments used to take me FOREVER. I can remember spending something like 3 or 4 hours fine-tuning and rearranging the first microtheme. I was amazed at how quickly things came back to me, because now I am able to fly through things, and do well on them.

Really, there wasn't much that I didn't like about this class.

So anyways, I had a good time and I learned a lot. I developed my writing skills a lot, and between this class and the writing center I feel pretty comfortable with what I do. I'm never really nervous about talking in front of people in general, but I get rather nervous about the content of whatever the speech is. Oh well, it will get better.

I have no idea what to expect from 10:002. Probably more essays on whatever, which I enjoy, and more speeches, which I also enjoy. So, I'm looking forward to it. I'm not really concerned about anything in particular.
