Strangely enough, I am helping coordinate an effort to setup computers with internet networks in local shelters. Katrina Survivors have a huge need for any kind of communications right now. Email is one method some may be able to use to contact loved ones in the state or elsewhere that they may be able to stay with. FEMA forms can be filled out and filed online. Other types of government assistance and aid can also be applied for over the internet. This can be of huge assistance to those trying to put their lives back together.

So that being the goal, we have 50 computers ready to go to shelters and be networked and setup. We need volunteers with IT experience to help, even minimal experience is welcome. We will work in teams led by professionals. If you want to help, we should be starting on this Sunday evening. Feel free to email me at ihope2@gmail.com or call 225-247-2682.

As soon as I have confirmation of which shelters we will be at and what times we'll be there I will post that info here. Also, please cross post and forward this info as you wish. This will be an on-going effort for as long as there is a need and we are able to get the computers for the effort. Shortly, there will be a yahoogroups listserve setup for those that wish to be involved over either the short term or the long term. That list serve address will be posted here soon as well.

As you may have already read in the LSU Reveille (http://www.lsureveille.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2004/05/05/409876bacc726) or the Advocate (http://2theadvocate.com/stories/050504/leg_ban001.shtml) or the Times Picayune (http://www.nola.com/news/tp/capital/index.ssf?/base/news-1/108374912299090.xml) or the Shreveport Times (http://www.shreveporttimes.com/news/html/00F76812-463D-4919-964F-FC8B5295F633.shtml) or on various news channel, we lost a pretty significant battle yesterday. SB166 (http://www.legis.state.la.us/leg_docs/04RS/CVT2/OUT/0000LHMH.PDF) was passed in committee where it will now travel to the senate floor for debate. This bill is the first of several proposed this legislative session to enact a constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage in the state of Louisiana. About 10 members of LSU?s Spectrum Alliance and a few community members (including representatives from Equality Louisiana (http://lagpac.org) and the ACLU of La.) showed up to voice their opposition to the bill. This is in comparison to the hundreds of people who came out in support of the measure. We were outnumbered 20:1. With those kinds of numbers, it was no surprise we lost. We learned the hard way that numbers matter here, not ethics and reason. But we shall pick ourselves up and make a stronger effort.

This is where you come in. I know there are people who care about this issue. I know that there are people that KNOW that this will affect their lives, their hopes and their own future in the state of Louisiana.

Rep. Steve Scalise?s HB61 (http://www.legis.state.la.us/leg_docs/04RS/CVT1/OUT/0000KXOY.PDF) will be heard in committee on Tuesday, May 11. I can?t urge enough how much we need people out there to show that they oppose this amendment. For a Representative on this committee, looking out on a sea of their constituents and reading the names of their voters who are in opposition to this bill will surely have an effect. We are the people that this Amendment will directly affect, and putting a face with this group will help immeasurably in our fight.

We?re urging you to join us on Tuesday, May 11, at 8:15am in House Committee Room 2 in the State capitol in Baton Rouge. Bring yourself, bring your friends, and bring your determination to fight bigotry in our state. For more information, contact us at rainbow@lsu.edu, or call Rachel All (225.229.9367) or Becca Hebert (225.205.6950).

Dearest Democrats --

Greetings. This is Gena O., the LSU College Dems webmaster. If any of you are interested in preserving reproductive rights, then we invite you to join us on a bus trip to D.C. to the March for Women's Lives (http://www.marchforwomen.org) on Sunday April 25th. I've been working closely with Planned Parenthood of Louisiana to provide scholarship bus tickets to LSU students at an affordable price. People are being asked to contribute a minimum of $35 towards the actual price of the ticket ($130). A limited number of these scholarship tickets are available, but if enough people are interested, we will be able to get our own bus and (hopefully) no one will be turned away. Now who among you could turn down a $35 trip to DC, complete with a raucous bus ride and political fervor? It's undeniably appealing. Join us.

So ... if you're interested, we're going to be in Free Speech Alley from Tuesday until Thursday, nine til two. Bring a friend and come fill out a ticket application. I'll also bring a few applications to the next College Dems meeting. For more info, visit the website: http://marchforwomen.angstmuffin.com

Danke,
Gena O.

fund raiser [fév. 13e, 2004|07:37 pm]

how's this for a fund raiser: we do it like a jogging or weight-lifting event, where people sign up to donate x amount of cents per mile or pound, but this will be a swimming event. the people swimming will swim in the deepest lake on campus(i think University Lake), across the narrowest point between two sides. i guess people could pay per lap, or per mile, if a swimmer quits and has to jump on a boat.

this would be great not only because we could make money off of it, but because it would be sure to get into the news, maybe even BR news. we could say it's to raise awareness about pollution!

Ok, I think meetings are going to be on Thursdays at 7:30. Location TBA...

How does this look? I've been working on it little by little. Compare it to the old site, which has redundant links, lots of graphics, and stuff. Still needs lots of work.

I'm gonna try to table Wednesday (the 28th), even if it's kinda cold. If anyone can bring a stereo with a cassette tape drive and batteries, let me know.

If things look good, maybe we can show our faces at the student org fair...

[feel |energeticenergetic]

Hello! Ok, I've got a great idea. I'll pause so everyone can be like "oh great, joe has an idea..." and roll their eyes.

...

Ok good. We should have a concert on campus, sponsored by PSA, starring Modest Mouse, Fifteen, and others small, but cool, bands. Problem, paying the bands. Solution, charging people to get in. Problem, renting the PMAC(or Tiger Stadium?). Solution, getting more people to come by making it a mini Free Tibet concert and a little fund raising before hand.

Renting a stadium would have to be the very first thing to do, to show the bands that this is serious. And we would want mucho time for promotional stuff. So maybe we should set a date for the fall, during an away game? Let me know what you think!
