Bio

I am a freelance journalist and writer, right now I work for Liberty TV and Radio based in Kaduna Nigeria. I work and live in Sudan as a correspondent covering the middle east. I have traveled to about 10 countries, mostly in West, Central and East Africa and the Middle East.

I recently traveled through 4 countries – from Nigeria to Cameroon, to Chad and the Sudan by road to see the great Hajj routes that pilgrims from West Africa followed to perform the Islamic pilgrimage in Makkah and Madinah in Saudi Arabia starting about 200 years ago even before the great Usman Dan Fodiyo Jihad of 1880s.

I am also a web developer and I publish a bi-lingual online news website – Kada News and Kada Hausa. I have been using WordPress since 2009 and several other open source projects that are not WordPress related.

I speak 5 languages including French, Arabic and of course Hausa. I am originally from Ikara, in the state of Kaduna in north central Nigeria. It is great to be part of such a great and passionate community such as this!

Interests

Web development, Writing, Learning languages and adventure travel, I love listening to music, watching sci-fi movies (Star Trek, Star Wars, ET – Extra Terrestrial, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Close Encounters of the Third Kind), I love books (I have read The Qur’an, The Bible, all Shakespeare’s Books, Novels: James Hadley Chase, Nick carter, Fredrick Forsythe and George Orwell, J.K. Rowling and Jane Austen), My greatest interest is my family: my 5 kids, Fatima my wife is the cornerstone of my existence!

WordPress Origin Story

I was a static web developer back in 2005, I was living in Nigeria then, and I would pine over how restrictive it was to build a site or web app that would do just what I wanted without building it 100% from scratch.

I sorely needed a platform to operate on. Frontpage and Dreamweaver just couldn’t satisfy my creative side.

Then sometime in late 2007, I read an online article about content management systems. Naturally, I was excited at the possibilities a CMS offered! I quickly read as many articles as I could find and quickly realized that WordPress offered the greatest potential for me – largest user base, ease of use (recall the famous “5-Minute Install” slogan?) and a passionate community.

I even ordered an excellent book all the way from the US – “Digging Into WordPress by Chris Coyier and Jeff Starr”, and I had to wait 9 months before it was finally delivered! This was when WordPress was at version 2.9. I still have the book, and I use it as a reference tool, and to teach budding devs how to set up WordPress websites.

I haven’t looked back since then, and I am happy to announce that since then I have developed more that 200 websites for clients inside and outside Nigeria. My clients include a UK based charity, and an orphanage based in Senegal, West Africa.
