Delegate to Republican National Convention from Michigan, 1860, 1884 (alternate); U.S. Attorney for Michigan, 1861; general in the Union Army during the Civil War; delegate to Michigan state constitutional convention, 1867; Michigan state attorney general, 1867-68; U.S. Representative from Michigan 2nd District, 1869-73. Died in Sturgis, St. Joseph County, Mich., June 6, 1888 (age 61 years, 78 days). Interment at Oak Lawn Cemetery, Sturgis, Mich.
