more Biggles stuff
I've just found a bonus EvS mention in one of the short stories I'm reading, 'Biggles Learns Something' from Biggles Flies to Work.
That's the extent of it, but it's the first time I've seen him mentioned anywhere outside of the EvS books. This is in a story about how criminals are being transported out of England by airplanes and helicopters that are allegedly flying wealthy patrons to Ascot. There is one thing that makes me wonder if EvS was involved elsewhere, because the story starts with an anonymous tip-off that a man who's wanted in France was seen in a TV shot of the crowd at Ascot, and if there's one thing that EvS specialises in, it's the anonymous tip-off, so perhaps he got wind of what his former colleage Laxter was doing and had some reason to want to use Biggles etc to interfere with it.
Intriguing mention of EvS being only interested in really lucrative work. The short story was originally published after Buries a Hatchet, so either WEJ is intending it to be set some years earlier, or else Biggles etc are still wondering if EvS might be reverting to his criminal ways again. If this really is set post-Hatchet, then I am completely certain the anonymous tip-off was EvS, that is exactly the sort of thing he'd do and also he's likely the sort of person who would watch Ascot on TV. If it's set back in EvS's criminal days, then it still could be him but in that case it would be because Laxter is causing him some kind of problem and he wants to get rid of him by setting Biggles on him.
And I don't recall Laxter from any of the other books, so either I've forgotten something, or else this is a reference to an unwritten von Stalhein story. Interesting that he would specifically want to hire an ex-RAF pilot; I'm going to go ahead and assume this was part of one of EvS's attempts to form his own team and he thought maybe the RAF was the secret sauce that made Biggles's teams work.
"We know him all right," replied Biggles, grimly. "It's our old friend Laxter. You remember the ex-RAF type who at one time was acting as second pilot for von Stalhein."
"Do you think von Stalhein is behind this racket?"
"No. The money would be chicken-feed to him."

Nice speculation about the timing of the story, Philomytha. The plot thickens though.
Home Front was published in August 57
Buries A Hatchet in Sept 58
Flies to Work in Sept 63 with the Laxter story first published in May 61 in the Boys Own Paper.
The only problem with this chronology, is that Laxter dies rather horribly at the end of Home Front.

But even in Home Front, he wasn't working with EvS, so that's still a mystery adventure. Or - well, perhaps I should reread Home Front and see if there's scope for imagining that EvS was involved in the whole thing behind the scenes.

I'm not sure how Laxter could have faked his own death: it was rather final and witnessed. Perhaps he had a twin brother.

Von Stalhein, Biggles and a diamond tiara: I want this story!

I still want more Von Stalwolf adventures.

Von Stalhein, Biggles and the tiara is Takes Charge.
Laxter burnt in the plane on the ground when he crashed trying to take off after Bertie shot out his tyre. It happened in front of Algy, Bertie and a policeman. Witnessed getting in and entering. It's not an unsurmountable problem, but difficult.

I think in several EvS books Biggles is very clear that von Stalhein is accustomed to a certain (high-end) lifestyle. I have always loved that the way this turns around is that in Hatchet he has to start from complete scratch.
Writing fics where he re-acquires some fancy things to make his apartment in Kensington feel more like a home is my favourite thing.

Also, all he'd have to do is walk over to his flat and ask.
The Laxter mention is so random, though! I definitely haven't read all the books, but that sounds totally unfamiliar to me, and also, I don't recall that members of EvS's various gangs were ever really developed to that extent except when he's working with a specific person like Zorotov. Most of his henchmen are just nameless henchgoons. :D
(tbh I love the idea that the tip-off is post-Hatchet EvS, it IS exactly the kind of thing he'd do, but if so, Biggles, why are you being Like That about him. >:|)
As far as outside mentions of EvS, I was completely delighted to run across a really fantastic one in Biggles and the Gun Runners:
"Through my fault he failed in a certain assignment" is just the most Biggles-esque way to explain that situation.
The assignment: killing Biggles
The reason why the failure was Biggles's fault: because he's too cute to kill
I also love the additional detail that Biggles is wanted in the USSR specifically because of the Sakhalin break-out. I want ALL the fic about this. Imagine late-in-series EvS's reaction if Biggles gets captured or hurt because of him!

And, well, I'm not sure EvS would actually take up with a gang smuggling criminals across borders rather than ask Biggles for money, but it might be a close-run thing.
Laxter is just so random! But I love the idea that at some point when trying to create his own team that could rival Biggles's team, EvS went 'you know what I need? I need a British pilot because they are The Best' and hiring Laxter in the hope that he could create his own Algy...

I KNOW. That's all! Nothing more here!
Biggles: That's all there was to it.
The Count: So what happened to this German fellow?
Biggles: *checks watch* I'm having dinner with him in an hour.
The Count: Wait, what.

MY HEART. It does actually seem like a thing he'd do, and there seem to be a lot of somewhat seedy ex-RAF pilots wandering around after the war, considering how many of them Biggles seems to run into.
