A favourite quote

I love the naturalist David Douglas very much for his own sake, but this quote from a letter written about him, and the image it produces, has always especially delighted me, because it's just So Stephen.

"One morning a large specimen was brought into our square, and we all had a hearty laugh at the eagerness with which the Botanist pounced upon it. In a very short time he had it almost in his embraces fathoming its stretch of wings, and he found it a full nine feet from tip to tip."

Fortunately...

"This satisfied him, and the bird was carefully transferred to his studio for the purpose of being stuffed."

I think they would have had a lot in common!
There was an article in the Guardian today about a cache of English erotica held by the British Library -

British Library's Collection of Obscene Writing Goes Online

They mention a book called Teleny or Reverse of the Medal, one of the earliest works of male gay erotic fiction. I wonder if PO'B was aware of the book or the title of his novel really was just the accepted meaning of the term, an opposite and usually less favorable aspect of an affair or question.

Softly as I Leave You - Part 2

Softly as I Leave You - Part 2Collapse )

Notes: This came from the remnant of a dream of Stephen quietly withdrawing from Jack. Then before Christmas I was wasting time on YouTube listening to Queen music and it threw up a singer, a blast from my past, Matt Monro. I was an odd child at Primary school I was aware of the Beatles and rock groups but as the few records we possessed belonged to my father in my early years I was more likely to hear Nat King Cole, Matt Monro or Dusty Springfield rather than the usual suspects. So I started trawling through his songs on YouTube and this one came up. I suppose you could view Softly as I Leave You as a soppy romantic song but it struck me more as a song about someone leaving a lover permanently.

LJ obviously doesn't let you embed videos in community posts any more so here are the lyrics -

Softly, I will leave you softly
For my heart would break if you should wake and see me go
So, I leave you softly, long before you miss me
Long before your arms can beg me stay
For one more hour or one more day
After all the years, I can't bear the tears to fall
So, softly as I leave you there
(Softly, long before you miss me)
(Long before your arms can beg me stay)
(For one more hour) or one more day
After all the years, I can't bear the tears to fall
So, softly as I leave you there
As I leave I you there
As I leave I you there

I was listening to the Science Show on the ABC's Radio National and heard this snippet of conversation -

Robyn Williams: A bit of a liability, having testicles really, isn't it.
Roger Short: It really is I think, yes. It's a short life but a merry one.
Robyn Williams: Roger Short is Professor of Physiology at Monash University. And from that evidence it would seem advisable to give up jogging and special diets and instead live a long life by simply having an orchidectomy. Get gelded, in other words.

Brigid's Gift

This wasn't the original story I was going to write for Advent, but that was too sad and it's taking me longer than I thought to write it. So here is something of a prequel generated by that story.

The Rainbow of Jack

(I'm really sorry but can't work out how to use DW -
even trying to use "Open ID" comes to nothing.
Is there any way someone could please post this story over there,
or send folk this way to read it?
Any help would be much esteemed!!)

Stephen ponders the Rainbow of Jack

Rainbow sailing ship

Christmas Day aboard Surprise and having stolen a few quiet moments at the rail during the tumult of the changing watch, Stephen was captivated by the prism of rainbow colours thrown up by the spray.

A rainbow is truly a gift from nature, he thought, pondering on the colours along with Christmas gifts and Jack . . .

His red is garnet.
Strong, passionate, devoted.
You feel him at your side, capable and solid. A steady force, a constant ally.

His orange is coral, fiery and exotic.
A man so spirited and full of life.
And he's bestowed that spirit on you, a delicate balance in your hands.

His yellow is amber.
Golden, rich, translucent.
Like his hair, so lustrous, you could almost taste the richness.

His green is emerald.
You rejoice in his powerful, knowledgeable touch.
Yet he can still amaze, reveal a sparkle for things kept hidden.

His blue is aquamarine.
Clear, calm, crystalline like the seas he commands.
Rare and unique.

His indigo is midnight, deep as the sky.
His violin echoing your cello late into the watches of the night.
Content in the quiet stillness or vigorous action of his simmering passions.

His violet is amethyst.
Vivid, purposeful, creative.
You draw on him for inspiration in many things, your muse, your confidante.

You see the pattern of his rainbow but have no need of any pot of gold.
He has more riches to offer than that.
And you gladly partake.

Wishing a very happy and blessed Christmas

I know our little comm has been very quiet. Please be reminded of Cruisedirector's April post that PD has migrated to Dreamwidth. It would be lovely to see you there, esp since the festive season and this community's anniversary will be upon us soon.

Do stay safe and sound.

LiveJournal-Dreamwidth Mirror

Hi folks, it's your erstwhile maintainer here. Because of issues with LiveJournal involving ownership and content, about which you may have read in the news, BERJAYAesteven and I have decided to import BERJAYAperfect_duet in its entirety to Dreamwidth. The comm on LiveJournal will continue to exist for as long as possible, so there is no need to stop posting in it, but I wanted to give people a heads-up because all entries posted at LJ now appear at Dreamwidth under the OpenID of the original poster. You can claim your OpenID and link it to your Dreamwidth account, or, if you object to your entries being on Dreamwidth (which is far more protective of you and your content than LJ has ever been), you can have your posts removed. There was no way to import selectively.

I'm sorry if this inconveniences anyone; protecting the community and its content was our primary concern. Please feel free to join the community at Dreamwidth. ETA: BERJAYAsharpiefan reminds everyone to claim your OpenIDs BEFORE deleting your LiveJournals if you intend to do so, since you can't be authorized under that name otherwise!

Icons?

I hope no one minds my posting here but where does one find Master&Commander/ Age of Sail icons? I realise the film is old by today's fandom standards but are there any icons at all?

Thank you in advance.
