Wooden It Be Nice!

November 26, 2007

wooden-car.jpg

Last week we showed you photos of a Mazda made from clay… we’ve also had pictures of Cardboard Astons. This week I have discovered a handcrafted wooden car on Carscoop and can only imagine the dedication this work of art took!

Vasily Lazarenko from Chernovtsy, Ukraine, decide to craft half the body of his hand built vehicle with a retro look and the other half with a more modern styling. The Ukrainian woody car is built on a chassis and engine from a 1981 Opel model with a 100 HP engine. Although the car isn’t registered (wonder why…), Lazarenko admits that he has taken the car out for the occasional spin. All I have to say is that I’m never touching a bottle of Vodka for the rest of my life….

Mr. Chapman…Doing Donuts In His Grave

November 23, 2007

lotus_cupholder_450-op.jpgIt is an abomination of the highest order, what is happening to Lotus! Sheer horror, is the only way to describe my reaction upon reading this bit of news on autoblog:

We were as taken-aback as the blokes over at Autocar when they discovered that the new, Performance Pack-equipped, Lotus Exige S came with an optional cup-holder. “It can’t be true!” we screamed to the God of Oversteer, but it is, and although it’s as minimal as it can get, it still seems like a dilution of a car (and a brand) that’s made a name for itself producing focused, lightweight weapons for the track. Mr. Chapman is doing donuts in his grave and we’re left shaking our heads.

Ashes To Ash, Dirt to… Clay… To Mazda!

November 22, 2007

07la_mazdadesign-7.jpgWith the boundaries and ideas of car designers being pushed further and further, it never ceases to amaze me what will happen next. In a fascinating piece autoblog is reporting:

We were finally able to check out how the clay model of the Mazda Design Challenge winner was coming, and after two days of milling and scraping, Mallory McMorrow’s design was beginning to materialize. Her vision of the 2018 Mazda3 began to look like an obvious choice considering how Mallory incorporated many of the “Flow” design elements that Mazda has debuted in concept form over the course of the last year, particularly the sweeping lines flanking the sides, the gaping grille and the tapered ducktail rear end.

Ford Mustang Bullitt… Forty Years After The Movie.

November 8, 2007

bullittmustang.jpg

Simply, “WOW” is all I can say! CarAndDriver.com‘s Alisa Priddle has made my day, by reporting a fabulous piece of news:

If you haven’t seen the movie Bullitt, or it’s been awhile since you experienced that now-famous seven-minute chase scene between Steve McQueen in his 1968 Ford Mustang GT and a Dodge Charger, then drop by your local video store for a refresher between now and January. That’s when Ford will start building a limited run of 2008 Mustang Bullitts for sale in the U.S. and Canada.

The 7700 Mustang Bullitts are expected to sell out within a month or two of going on sale—every 2001 Mustang Bullitt (5000 were built) was all spoken for within about 60 days. The 2008 model, which is being serialized, will sell for $31,075. It will be formally unveiled at November’s L.A. auto show.

Like Lego All Over Again!

November 7, 2007

BERJAYA

Well, I think I’ve seen it all now! Stackable cars… reminds me of shopping trolley bays, but these Lego-like cars may not actually be a bad idea for the city. My question is: where do you put the coin to unlock the car?  Technology review is reporting:

The Smart Cities group at the MIT Media Lab is working on two low-cost electric vehicles that it hopes will revolutionize mass transit and help alleviate pollution. Next week, the group will unveil a prototype of its foldable electric scooter at the EICMA Motorcycle Show, in Milan. A prototype for the team’s foldable electric car, called the City Car, is slated to follow next year.

The MIT group sees the vehicles as the linchpin in a strategy that aims to mitigate pollution with electric power, expand limited public space by folding and stacking vehicles like shopping carts, and alleviate congestion by letting people rent and return the vehicles to racks located near transportation hubs, such as train stations, airports, and bus depots.

Aston Martin… Recycled!

November 6, 2007

BERJAYA

If, like me, you hold onto all your bits of cardboard for recycling and ever wondered what you could use it for, Chris Gilmore has a couple of suggestions! Wonder what James Bond would have made of this Aston Martin DB5… and it’s all made from cardboard. Wonderful or what! Might try my hand at this on St. Stephen’s Day, after all the pressies have been unwrapped!!!

Audi… “slowest car we’ve ever built”

October 29, 2007

Have you seen the new add from those wonderful poeple at Audi… It’s pure genious! in case you have missed out… here’s another chance to have a look.

Billing the R8 as the “slowest car we’ve ever built,” the new Audi ad campaign features the R8 in a garage that looks like a microchip clean room, being assembled in a ghost-like series of time-lapsed blurs and streaks, complete with laser tolerance inspection. The ad campaign, running in the UK, is said to have cost 6 million pounds, reports The German Car Blog. The whole scene is set to the sound of Simone White’s ‘The Beep Beep Song,’ a mellow and appropriately car-themed love song.

Back To School… Car Design Course.

October 26, 2007

BERJAYACarBodyDesign.com are reporting a very interesting and unusual piece. While this may not be of interest to everyone, it might prove useful to anyone seriously thinking of studying car design or maybe the person looking for a course with a difference.

Milan-based PRM Design company has organized a yearly Course in Car Design, aimed at the creation of a convertible concept car, which will cover all the developments stages, from market analysis to the final scale model.

“Projects will be developed under the guidance of a professional car designer following all the steps: Market analysis, 2D sketches, CAD 3D model, milling of 1:5 scale model, degree show.”

At the end of the course each designer will receive a 1:5 milled scale model, and a degree show will give the chance to meet managers and designers from the Automotive, Fashion and Technology industries.
