Alex Bleeker & The Freaks – Alex Bleeker & The Freaks (Underwater Peoples, 2009)

BERJAYA

Do you think we could review the Alex Bleeker record without you mentioning the wah-wah?

Nick: haha, we can try!

it’s a very sympathetic sound, I think.

isn’t it?

you sort of…despite the fact….his mother shouldn’t have given him a wah-wah pedal for his birthday, you end up liking it.

it’s definitely music of the last century, nothing wrong with that.

it’s clangy.

do you know what I mean?

it’s metal, clang! I’m sure that’s want he wanted though.

{track 4 – Animal Tracks}

this reminds me of something.

it’s a cover.

yes but it’s probably a cover of something I don’t know.

yep.

haha, no it’s the voices, the way they’re put together.

but the whole thing sounds like it was recorded thirty years ago.

and the voices are old! it’s hard to believe these are guys in their 20’s.

maybe they’re faking it, maybe they’re in their 40’s? and they just got some young guys to pose for the cover?

actually you do get used to the wah-wah, it’s less irritating then it was yesterday, maybe they just should’ve toned it down a bit in the mix, it’s so obtrusive.

who has a voice like that?!?

it’s someone you play a lot. someone who has a voice very similar to that.

can you not think of it? a high, old voice?

I know what you mean, gimme a second.

I know who it is!

who?

Little Wings!

who?

When are Underwater Peoples gonna trip up? It’s like someone started a record label just for me! Alex Bleeker also plays bass in those champs Real Estate, most of Real Estate are The Freaks, with Julian Lynch on that ‘obtrusive’ wah-wah. These are haunted, dusty Country Rock jams. It’s nothing new but who cares about new? Special is where it’s at!

Seven Inch Showdown!

Ok so today we’re gonna review six 7”s released this year. six bands, two songs apiece, to see who you hate the least.

hahaha, ok.

ferg&gerg

Fergus & Geronimo – Harder Than It’s Ever Been bw/ Last Letter (Woodsist)

I don’t know if they meant for it to be like that, but it was recorded very rough, and as usual, I’ve heard it all before, nothing great about it but it’s fine-ish.

sicalmansion

Sic Alps – L. Mansion bw/ Superlungs My Supergirl (Slumberland)

sounds like a very amateurish rendering of early Beatles stuff.

are you saying they have the potential to become ‘the greatest band in the world ever’?

haha no! they are just imitating the early work of ‘the greatest band in the world ever’.

they have a lot to learn.

these guys are a school band, the guys from sixth form playing at the end of  year concert.

fratdad

Frat Dad – Greg the Nerd bw/ Freak in Nature (Underwater Peoples)

did they just record one of their rehearsals?

they haven’t decided which colour to paint with.

basically, what I’m saying is they don’t know what to do.

they’re hoping people can’t hear how bad it is under the muddled mess.

NEXT!

nodzzzttl

Nodzzz – True to Life bw/ Good Times Crowd (What’s Your Rupture?)

boring, dreary, amateurish, like….yeah? well, everything like that.

not good.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………

caveweddingsThe Cave Weddings – Bring Your Love bw/ Let’s Drive (Hozac)

these guys are second best so far, after Geronimo and whoever.

again it’s all so totally predictable, school band stuff. no real musical ideas, no real… it’s derivative, all of it.

remember when I’d go see you playing at battle of the bands things? it’s like that.

it’s not surprising though is it? there are so many people making music these days, you can’t expect them all to be good.

it’s like when I used to teach in Dun Laoghaire, out of a class of twenty, you’d be lucky to have one real talent.

I wonder how many bands there are in America? tens of thousands surely.

in good times…maybe 1% would be good? and out of that 1%, 5% might be really excellent.

of course, we are….well we forget that the reproductive media have raised the expectations of our standards, you watch premiership football on the telly, and suddenly everything that isn’t premiership football is ‘crap’. even though it actually isn’t at all crap it just seems that way because we’re fed the best.

same goes for music.

and really, bands like this you should really listen to in context, and listening to it on record is wrong, you expect recorded music to sound professional, I should go see these guys play in their local village hall, with people having beers and just enjoying the music.

we’ve still got one more to go, maybe they’ll turn everything around for you.

realblues

Real Estate – Fake Blues bw/ Green River (Half Machine)

They are WAY ahead of all the rest.

are you just saying that because the recording is cleaner than the others?

no, no, they actually have ‘a sound’ they know what they’re about.

they also sound modern, all the rest sound so dated, they could’ve come from the early sixties or whenever.

Real Estate are the winners, I actually like that.

I don’t dislike Fergus & Geronimo either but Real Estate I would probably buy.

The others? if they came on the radio…I would switch it off.

Ducktails – 7” (Breaking World Records, 2008) & Real Estate – 7” (Underwater People, 2009)

ducktailz

Nick:I get the feeling this doesn’t stand on it’s own, it feels like it’s been created to illustrate something, not a movie but a slight sequence of something, a visual.

I want to say ‘where are the slides?’

what am I supposed to be looking at.

what if you were on a train looking out the window or something?

yeah maybe…there’s something African about it, I can picture a quick travelogue of North African scenes and people.

the Germans have a word for…well Romano Guardini have you heard of him?

nope

he was a philosopher who wrote in German, he wrote about what constitutes art, and according to him art becomes a thing in itself,  ‘das ding an sich’ which means that although the art represents something it also becomes like a stone, but this piece of music didn’t have that, it never became something of itself.

I’ve probably explained that really badly.

I mean you should be able to appreciate this for what it is and not what it represents.

I’d maybe buy this if I was putting on a slideshow.

realestate

here’s the same guy again but this time with his friends

oh he’s got friends has he?

(later)

well, he really needs his friends, that’s all I can say really.

this actually sounds like something, this sounds like music.

the first one actually got close to musak, maybe it’s too fast but it’s near enough to the music people play in lifts.

I hate to say it but that is nice, I know I shouldn’t be using ‘nice’ but there you go.

Ducktails is Matt Mondanile, while Real Estate is him plus Etienne Duguay, Alex Bleeker and Martin Courtney. And for the last couple of weeks these two records have been swirling around my head first thing in the morning, last thing at night, on buses and the luas and while slipping and sliding around on the ice in Dundrum, close your eyes for a second and you can pretend the sun is shining bright.

Today, the ice is mostly gone, the sun actually IS shining and a physical copy of the Real Estate 7” finally arrived so….. yeah, here we are.
