What did everyone think about the films The Prestige (which is based off of a book by Christopher Priest) and Stranger Than Fiction? I found myself crying during the latter (because I am a writer as well, so I know EXACTLY how Karen Eiffle's chracter felt), and was so enthralled by the little details of the film!!!

I know promotions are annoying, and also seem to herald to downfall of a community. . . But this fandom is small as it is, and I'm going to have to rely on all of you to actually create some kind of working fanbase here on LJ.
The community is based on the Booth Tarkington novel The Magnificent Ambersons, and all of its subsequent film adaptions. If you're a fan of any format, I urge you to come join and contribute. Literary discussion, icons, gushings, fanworks. . . all are welcome.

It'd be nice to have some company.
Cross-posted, sorry if you have to see this twice.

I found this comm by the interest Raise the Red Lantern, and, well, I'm a shameless fangirl. :')
I saw it once when I was younger, and I labelled it immediately as 'mom don't show me the movie with the crazy chick again please.' But I watched it again... about a month ago? and just... wow. Gong Li did an amazing job, and there was so much good symbolism. So yes. I loved it. :D

Has anyone here seen Mysterious Skin?? I went to see it at the Cinema months ago and it was the only film I have ever seen where at the end of the film, even after all the credits have finished, the entire audience is still sat in their seats, with a look of deep shock/thought on their faces. I had read the book, so I knew what to expect, and it wasn't half as good as the book, but it was brave. It didn't shy away from the violence in the book, which was glad. I don't know if it counts as a film that makes you think, but I'd love to talk to someone about it, all of my mates have refused to watch it because of the subject matter.

i'm curious to hear if anyone's seen a history of violence and if so, what their opinions on it were.
my opinion: first half of the movie was amazing. james spader does such a great job of switching between cold blooded killer and american everyman. however, the movie just fell apart in the second half for me. i don't know how else to describe why without saying it dissolved into pointless violence and shooting. some will say that that *was* the point of the movie and point to the title as proof positive. either way it just didn't work for me. maybe i'll come up with some better reasons. in the meantime, opinion away!

hello! =)
waking life. beautiful film. at on point, Speed Levitch (a character in the film) spoke of how a man (don't quite remember his name) said that he couldn't wait for his dying moment, because after the whole body shuts down there's still 6 to something minutes of brain activity left in which I don't know WHAT you see, but according to the film you have seemingly long, very detailed dreams. now I feel the same way. imagine the possibilities? what would you see? the answers to all your questions? or maybe an entirely different world, or the world in a photo negative? I guess it depends, but that's for YOU to think up.
WATCH WAKING LIFE.

Anyone have any thoughts on the upcoming "A Scanner Darkly" by Philip K Dick [dir. by Linklater]? Personally I have been waiting for this one for awhile now.

"the thoughts that the amazing film - truth telling film - KIDS by larry clark has brought upon"
and i am sitting here in my room debating life
and i dont want to be saved and for the first time in my life i dont want to be loved i simply want to be free
his hand running up my thigh higher past my skirt and as i turn it away wanting nothing more - then him to leave i look into his eyes and its the scariest eyes i have ever seen the fierceness
i look down at my body and i am disguisted i am human and i am sane
i am not an animal - and he never wanted anything more from me then what i was willing to give until i realized that it was too much it was all for somebody else
all my wants and my desires were never truly mine
and i was confused and insaned by them never becoming reality
how can MY desires become reality - if there never really mine they came from a part of my body - that was processed - made rather than born an aritificial streaming of wants - a product of coprution the coruption i have wanted to inflict in my body
but have not fully taken up the oppurtunities and i have sabotaged relationships because the one man i truly love more than anything in the world the one man that loved me more than my worth wouldnt corupt me - but i wanted to be corupted - i wanted it so bad
and now my door has been opened - it was an aritificial want produced by my fear that was inflicted by society and now i can never have him again
and i ask myself - am i ending up with the right regrets and i dont want these tears to fall
but i cant help the truth
and as foggy as my world is now becoming things are appearing much clearer

I had this question in my Film class on Schindler's List and I'm completely stumped. I thought maybe perhaps someone could help me out! Here's the question.
There's an effective example of cross cutting mixing a wedding, Schindler with a singer, and Goeth with Helen in the basement. Explain why you think these three events are grouped together.
I don't even know why crosscutting is used. Help would be much appreciated. ^^;

Has anyone seen the HBO film Normal? It stars the very talented Jessica Lange and Tom Wilkinson. It's a movie about a very close, loving couple who live in a rural town who have to deal with people's harsh judgements and cruelty after Tom Wilkinson tells his family, friends, and co-workers that he wants a sex change.
I absolutely love this movie. It's absolutely breathtaking, sad, and refreshing at the same time. The acting is flawless and I have to say that Jessica ( one of my favorite actresses) gives a performance nothing short of outstanding. It's a film about changes and how the human soul handles it and it just blew me away when I watched it. I cried, I smiled, and I thought about it for hours after viewing. Any thoughts on this?

I want to set up a debate right here, right now. This crazy European said that romantic comedies were "a genre which I generally find to be one of the lowest forms of humour". Although I generally agree with this erudite, I find that many other genres, how shall I say it, SUCK ASS. Take, for example, the culture clash movies, i.e. every Jackie Chan movies(Chinese vs. any other culture) or Black vs. White. Another bad movie to contest is the Meathead genre The 007 series has delved into those constant explosions and gore type things. I wont pretend that movies like "XXX" with Vin Deisel although I wish they have never been made. So I guess I should define the question. What movie genre is the lowest of the low? Support your genre with at least three movies.

I kind of stumbled upon this community by mistake, but it seems really cool and I'm glad I'm here.
I'd like to post about the movie About Schmidt. That movie seemingly had no real great plot, but when I looked closer I saw the melancholy tale of a hasbent man with nothing to do really with his wife gone but to spread kindness and love throughout the world, like with his charity child Ndugu. After I watched that movie I cried for a long time then sat in my bedroom thinking about it. I really liked it. Comments on it?

Hi, I've been watching this community for a long time so I finally joined. I absolutely love movies that make you ponder for awhile after they're over. One of my favorite movies from awhile ago is Artificial Intelligence, which really didn't do too well in theaters, but I was amazed. The whole idea of technology's role in society, and how it's taking over, plus the theme of love and devotion, I had to watch it over and over again, and every time it blew my mind. Rarely do I find another person that thought the movie was good, so does anyone here like it?

For all you psycological movie thriller fans out there, "Saw" is a GREAT one to see!
The basics:
-Something incredibly cheap like a one million dollar budget to make the film.
-James Wan wrote the story. His first movie ever. Brilliant plot.
-$35.394 Million Box Office Receipts Already.
-Produced by a Company called Twisted Pictures <--You know it's going to be weird/scary just by the name.
-A quote from the President of Lion Gates Films: With 'SAW,' James Wan and Leigh Whannell have tapped into filmgoers' most base fears and have created something that people immediately feel they need to talk about with others, and see again to catch clues they may have missed the first time.
PLOT: Adam (Leigh Whannell) and Dr. Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes) wake up chained to pipes at opposite ends of a dirty utility room. They soon learn that they have become the victims of the Jigsaw, a serial killer who devises intricate situations to get his victims to kill each other. Pitted against the clock and each other, the two must work to outwit their captor and save Gordon's family, who have been taken hostage by the killer.
