La Fille mal gardée - Pas de ruban from Act I (Marianela Nuñez and Carlos Acosta).

Found this on YouTube a bit ago, and have watched it one million times. It's genuinely the cutest thing.

(Still low-key on my ballet bullshit, by which I mostly mean watching random clips on youtube. I have some whole ones saved to watch when I have time to sit for a couple hours.)

I saw another version, and in the bit where he's trying to make it ripple while she dances over it, it just stays flat on the ground, and there's nothing either of them can do about it. One of the best ballerina holder uppers in the world, and the ribbon decided not to move.

I’ve always been mystified by ballet but that was enthralling. Is the ribbon dance peculiar to this work of are there other shared prop scenes that tricky?

I haven't seen another ballet with shared props like this, though I have far from seen every ballet. Some dances one of the dancers has an object, often a fan or a flower or something, but I don't remember passing it back and forth.

This ballet was written in the 1960 to be a tribute to English dance, so there are also various country dances, a maypole, a panto dame, et cetera. So I think the ribbon might come from that.

Esmeralda has a tambourine, too.

There's a sweet scene in Coppelia where when she's pretending to be a robot, she does different dance styles with various props.

Ooh, I saw La Fille mal gardée recently at my national ballet! Not the same version as the Royal Ballet, so it didn't have the ribbon dance, but it was really adorable and put me very solidly on the camp of "I think they should do more comic ballets, for enrichment (both mine and theirs)".

That ribbon work is seriously impressive.

They did do the clog dance and solidly convinced me that Widow Simone is the actual main character of the ballet. The young lovers are there and adorable, but Simone just stole the show 100%.

I feel like Ashton hit the right amount of panto dame with this one. Cinderella was that's too much panto dame, put some back, but this was great!
