Name: Rena Age: 22 Location: Australia Communities you mod/maintain:ljgames_au which is an interactive online reality game that I created mainly for Australians but still accept international players if they really want to play. It is a difficult one to run because it is a hard concept to grasp for new players and a lot of people aren't willing to jump in and play a game they don't really understand. Even though most, if not all players who have tried have told me that they have had a great time. We have a lot of loyal players who return to play multipul rounds but it is really difficult getting in new players. Also becuase there is a few games similar on livejournal that offers a lot of competition.
beautifuldreams which is a much easier community to manage. It is a community for people to discuss or share their dreams. There has never been any dramas, but I do have trouble getting members to actually comment on each others posts and interact with each other. I found when it was a small community most of the players even recognized each other and really got along, but now it is a big community it seems that everybody is interested in talking about their own dreams but not reading about other peoples.
What do you hope to get out of this and/or your community(ies)? A couple of different things. In ljgames_au I would love some advice on how to bring new players into the game. I already offer a prize of 6 months paid livejournal time for the winner which has brought in a couple more new players but not as many as I was hoping for. In beautifuldreams I would love some advice on how to bring back that community spirit and get my members interacting with each other while still staying on topic. Plus just a place to go if I ever run into some dramas *crosses fingers* that I don't though lol.

Well I just got handed the reins of the community unexpectedly so I want to have a better idea of what I'm doing. In addition I've been wanting to learn a little bit more about the layout and design capabilities in LJ for the community but also for my own journal. In short: I'm here to steal your brains.
Name: Valerie Age: 21 Location: Muncie, IN Communities you mod/maintain: premade_layout, pirate_rum and a graphics journal graphics_by_vrj. What do you hope to get out of this and/or your community(ies)? More members, tips to get people to post (right now I've made a couple posts and tired to get others to post but it doesn't seem to work), and find a co mod for premade_layout.
Name:Jennifer, but everyone calls me Jenn or Jenni Age:24 Location: Boston, MA Communities you mod/maintain: ask_a_nurse and female_fans. What do you hope to get out of this and/or your community(ies)?
I honestly hope to just get some advice on moderating a community. There are times when I feel like banging my head against the wall because the members either don't listen or just fail to follow the simple rules. This is especially in ask_a_nurse where everyone feels like they have a PhD in everyone else's health matters.
For female_fans its a new sports community for women sports fans. I really want help promoting it and just getting it started with as little drama as possible. I don't want to run the community and micro manage everything, but I do want everything to run smoothly.
Name: Claire Age: 29 Communities I mod/maintain:ask_a_nurse What do I hope to get out of modding this community: Hoping to "clean up" the advice being given to people who are asking for help, make sure people are getting safe and appropriate advice, and also to be able to help people with their problems, empower them to help themselves.
So myself and four other people took over modding a really busy community a couple of months ago. We revamped the look and layout, and started creating more rules and structure.
I'm noticing lately, a lot of deleted comments and replies in threads. I suspect it's people who know they aren't following the rules and don't want to be told off or have their post deleted, etc. I was wondering if there's a way to keep replies and comments from being deleted, or to have a copy of them emailed to the mods? I checked in the community settings, and it looks like it's already set up to email comments to the community's main email address. But that isn't happening... And it's a gmail account, so I don't think it would filter out stuff from LJ.
I really want to keep track of what people are saying, in case they are being snarky and deleting it, or violating the community rules, and need to be banned. We've had a few people causing trouble who didn't like the new rules and structure, so it's an ongoing issue.
Name: Meg Age: 16 Location: NY Communities you mod/maintain: xmidnight_drive and electrikk__ I created both of them. What do you hope to get out of this and/or your community(ies)? I need help getting more members and having ideas on how to make it a fun popular community. midnight drive used to be very active and now it's not so i deleted all the members unless they wanted to stay in which case they had to promote in 5 places. It's more based on a balance of looks and inner beauty. I just made electrikk and i want it to be harsher. i want hot members and the elite only. i just made it but no one is joinging and i need help!
Name: sarah [ponks] Age: 21 Location: chicago, il Communities you mod/maintain: blotted_visions, steelthisicon & ponkiecons What do you hope to get out of this and/or your community(ies)? i have a really hard time getting active members, and maintaining them...i've tried posting in those promo communities, but those never really work either....im wondering if my comm. ideas just suck, or if theres a better way =/ its so frustrating *sigh*
I work really hard for my communities (as I'm sure most of you do as well) and I work my communities as if they were a business, meaning that "customer service" is important to me. I want each of my members to have a good time and make sure that all rules are fair to all and such. I am also flexible to a reasonable degree, as long as it isn't something that is going to upset the other members.
I just get so frustrated when you are in communities (or you just see communities around) where the mods get in "power hungry" mode. I don't see why they think they are doing a good thing. It only makes the members feel less welcome and more restricted and tends to lead to more arguments and members leaving or starting their own community with their own rules.
The point I am trying to make is to avoid being the mod that everybody looks at and thinks that they need to chill out. You can make sure everybody follows the rules AND be friendly at the same time. It will save you a lot of stress, but also help the community out. Remember that there is nothing to stop other people making their own community.
That is just my piece of advice (not sure if it is welcome though) :)
Name: Katie Age: 15 Location: Cape Cod Communities you mod/maintain: layouts____ Its a premade layout community.
My community is brand new [created 12/24] but I have put up some of my layouts and done some extreme promoting so we have 12 members now [wooooo]. Only two days old and I found a member with my layout [minus the header, i told them that they may modify the codes as long as the still give me credit for the rest of it] and she removed the credit in the layout, which is rule #2 and no credit in the info. My rule is that 1 offence is a warning and a repeat is a ban. Since it is so early I thought I might just ask her to credit ad not give a warning. I am not sure how to go about it. Should I just contact her in her personal journal? Let me know.
Name: emella Age: 19 Location: Ohio Communities you mod/maintain: brkbck_chllnge An icontest community for the movie and short story Brokeback Mountain.
I need help. I have an icontest community, and we're somewhat new, being only about 5 to 6 weeks old. Most of the people who are submitting icons aren't very good, and the ones who are are always winning. I keep having the same 6 or 7 people submitting icons, and other people are getting irritated that there aren't any good icons, or that there are only a few good icons. So my questions are:
How do I get people to submit more icons to the challenges?
Every week we have two challenges and usually you can submit about two icons per challenge. In total, 3-4 icons per week.
How do I get better icon makers to join?
I've tried telling the people who post brokeback mountain icons, that they are welcome to join, but somehow I don't think that works. I've also been promoting on promo journals and I've been becoming affiliates with other comms.
I want to keep my community legal- so I requested that everyone in my community have their entire DOB in their userinfo, or that they email me their entire DOB so that I can have it on file. Where should I keep these? Is just a folder in my computer okay? Is that what other mods of adult communities do?
What other LJ rules/internet laws about adult communities do I have to follow?
I want to find a new moderator/maintainer/admin for lotrboys_daily, because I don't have the time anymore, and I'm not involved in the fandom much anymore. What would be the best way to go about finding a new mod? Should I ask one or two people I see posting regularly in the community, or just put an all-call ad out in the community?
bdsm_houston was one I created, and both me and my fiance maintain it. It's not very active. I didn't create sub_lounge, but I'm now the admin and mod. There was some drama within the BDSM community which involved the former mod, and so she left LJ because of it, leading to my modship. I've never maintained a community this large (100+ members), and the task is a bit daunting. I've only been the mod for a day or so now, and I have a few things I want to do-
-Go through the members and purge all who are under 18 years of age -Go through the members and purge those who aren't submissive (as it is a submissive-only community) -Find a way to reduce drama within the community
I'm not looking forward to visiting each and every user's profile to find their age- and if no age is provided, contact them and tell them that they must have their birthdate in their userinfo. Ditto with my second task.
How do you reduce drama in your community? I don't want to be a bitch, but I will ban people who flame-monger. I just don't want to find myself in the middle of drama like said previous mod.
