Anyone else both on LJ and questing for the next Great Internet Mersenne Prime?

new gimps client p95v251
for those running windows, there is a new pre-beta client out that supports multithreading. I just happened to look at http://www.mersenne.org/gimps directory this morning and saw it was put there yesterday. make sure to read the readme file first as this is still early development software. look for p95v251.zip in the directory. |

Hey I noticed that there is now a version 24 series of prime95. This version is for people with amd chips. From the whatsnew.txt file: 1) Athlon users should see a 20% to 30% speed increase. 2) Pentium, Pentium II, Pentium III users should see dramatically WORSE performance. Run version 23 instead. The current version is 24.11 and it also has support for amd64 chips in both 32 bit and 64 bit windows. you can get it from http://mersenne.org/gimps/. happy hunting! |

Update on 41st Mersenne prime

Subject: [Prime] 41st Mersenne Prime reported!
The newly reported prime is genuine. The user has sent in his last savefile.
I reran the final 15,000 iterations and rediscovered the prime!!
Congratulations to all GIMPS participants on our 7th Mersenne prime!
The official different hardware, different software test has not begun. This
test should take a month, after which we'll announce the exponent.

41st Mersenne prime may be found

Subject: [Prime] 41st Mersenne Prime reported!
Hi all,
A computer has just reported discovering the 41st known Mersenne Prime!!
If proven correct, this will be the new largest known prime.
The test was run using version 23 with its better false-positive screening.
I've emailed the user and asked for a copy of the save file with a few
thousand iterations left to go. If he emails that file to me and re-running
the last iterations again shows the number to be prime, then we will
know the report is accurate.
I'll keep you posted,
