Hello!

The community appears to be a little dead but nonetheless: I'm spending a week in London at the end of this month with two friends and am looking for shopping opportunities for especially vintage (70s/80s) rock merchandise, especially posters, and (possibly second-hand) rock/metal vinyls. Names and addresses of shops would be extremely helpful.

Also if you can recommend any cheap(ish) places to eat and/or second-hand clothes/shoe shops, please do. Thanks in advance!

The Bastard Speaks: Greetings from across the pond.. [26 Jun 2008|09:00am]

Hello, all.

I thought I would reach out to the LJ communities with my questions regarding relocating from Los Angeles to London within the next 4 to 6 months.

My Basic stats:

30ish male who's married...getting a gig in the New Media/Technology space - Exec. Level...

Eventually dragging my 2 dogs (Basset Hound and Mastiff) with me after getting settled in.

MY questions are: Where should a decent, alternative, mellow, intellectual married guy move to in London with the Mrs.? A house would be preferable.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. :)

Clockwork comedy (ammendment) [03 Jun 2008|02:27pm]

Hello folks.

Just a quick one to let you know that unfortunately Matt Crosby can no longer make it tonight so we've done a bit of switching around and now the fantastic Steve Hall has been added to the bill. So come along tonight and see "the pretty one from We Are Klang" doing some excellent stand up without the other two.

Don't forget we also have Wil Hodgson, Andrew O'Neill and two fantastic new acts - John Dorney & George Ryegold. And it's in a pub! With booze! Vaguely near a really good chip shop! What more could you want?

Birthday in London [08 May 2008|06:14pm]

Hello there!

I am planning to visit your lovely city in September to celebrate my 22th birthday. I'm staying for 5 days, and I'll do all the touristy stuff, so my question is this: what can a girl do in London to really have a memorable birthday? Amusement Park, Zoo, drag queen show, jumping off Tower Bridge, jumping on John Barrowman...it can be anything, really.

Also, has anybody seen Avenue Q? I'm very inclined to go and watch it, but I'd like a second opinion.

Thanks in advance!

Hello lovely folk of London.

Next Tuesday, 6th of May, there will be another Clockwork Comedy, a night I co-run with my friend Clare.

This month features the following mighty fine acts:

Jon Richardson (6music with Russell Howard, Chortle Best Newcomer 2008)
Dan Antopolski (Hyperdrive, Comedy Cuts)
Adrian Poynton ("Astounding moments of genius…stunning" - The Guardian)
and MC Robin Ince (Book Club/Latitude Festival, Radio4's Personality Test, BBC7's Serious About Comedy)

Entry is £7 or £5 concessions (and there's a secret password for cheap entry at http://www.myspace.com/clockworkcomedy). Clockwork is at 96-98 Pentonville Road in Islington, and the nearest tube station is Angel (or Kings Cross with a wee bit of a walk).

If you can some along, it'd be lovely to have you there. Flyer under the cut for anyone who's interested!

The Lord of the Rings Musical [11 Apr 2008|05:56pm]

[ mood | BERJAYA determined ]

I went to see the LOTR musical last night.
I came expecting an amazing set, amazing costumes, and really cool technical effects. I also came expecting a certain "cheese-factor", as this is a serious drama of about 1300 pages (referring to the book, in case you're feeling slow) crammed into 3 hours - not to mention put to song!

What I got was more or less what I expected, yet so much more! The set and everything truly was worth the money all on its own. The acting was good, and so was the singing. And there was definitely a lot of lines delivered meant to be dramatic or neutral (the point is, not meant to be funny) that I softly laughed at when hearing.
One of the things I loved the most about the show, which I wasn't sure of upon arrival was that it is a straight adaptation of the book(s) and not of the Peter Jackson movies. So although they had to cut TONS, and change lots, there were many scenes that were truer to the books or that they included that the movies did not.
There were a couple songs I really liked straight away, like "The Road Goes On", "Lothlorien", and (especially, think it might be my favorite) "Now and For Always". And the rest are growing on me as I listen to the soundtrack right now.

I'm a huge LOTR fan, so it's possible that I'm biased in my impression of the musical. But I really recommend seeing it!
The London show closes some time in July 2008, so hurry up and go see it if you're in town (or can get yourself in town)!!!

Cramming A Lot of Tourism Into A Short Period of Time [02 Feb 2008|09:30pm]
BERJAYA
britgeekgrrl
Hello!

I've got a small challenge for anyone who fancies taking it on.

I've got, hrm, about eight hours to kill in London, this Friday. I'll have just staggered off a plane from San Francisco, but I'm a big believer in hitting the ground running in order to fend off jetlag. My plane lands at Heathrow at 7AM (god willing) and I have to be on a train towards Reading around 4PM. Barring a possible lunch date, everything in between is up for grabs. I'm Tube-savvy, have no special-access needs and will only have a small, checkable-in-coatrooms rollycase with me, so I'm not limited by anything except incipient exhaustion...

I've a few ideas of places I'd like to go, but I feel like I've gotten stuck in a rut of the usual sorts of places one goes on a day out to London and therefore might be missing out on some excellent opportunities.

So, here's my parameters:

I used to live in the UK, so I've done a lot of the classic sort of things - the Tower of London, Trafalgar Square, the London Dungeon & Tussaud's, most of the museums, various galleries, etc.

I have no interest in shopping - certainly not at the exchange rate the way it is - with the possible exception of Forbidden Planet (god help me!). Oxford Street and Harrod's have no attraction - well, maybe Harrod's Food Hall when I'm hungry...

I do have an interest in the following: history in general, and history of fashion and costume in particular (although the current offerings at the Fashion Textile Museum look a bit ho-hum), pre-20th century art (I've visited both the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery, relatively recently), people-watching, books, movies & television, interesting walks, things gothic (in the modern and historical sense), a well-mixed drink, and I have an occasional love of the silly and strange.

On my maybe list are the following: the textile collection at the V&A (which was closed during my last visit, ayie!), the London Eye (touristy, I know, but I've not done it before), Westminster Abbey (can't get much more historical than that!) and the Imperial War Museum. But, as I mentioned, they're all 'usual' places, that one tends to find via typing things in Google - as I did.

So, I'm open to suggestions! Whatcha got?

Thanks!

Posters... [23 Jan 2008|10:27pm]

Could anybody point me in the direction of poster shops in London? I could use any suggestions of places. Obviously, these places don't have to exclusively sell posters! I'm aware that that is a highly unusual thing! But where should I go? Camden? Covent Garden? The Cinema Store? Forbidden Planet perhaps? Those places I know already, and am planning on covering, but I would really really appreciate some guidance! Steer me in the right direction!

Working Holiday [29 Nov 2007|02:02pm]

Hey,

My name's Ellen. I'm planning on heading to London in 2008 on a working holiday. I've never been before but I'm currently obsessed with the place!

I've found a few programs that set you up with live-in bar jobs and I was wondering if anyone has ever tried one of these and if it would be a good way to experience London life?

I'm thinking of going for a full 12 months. I'm a bit concerned that I may get over there and hate it, or that may be too long to be away from my family etc. But if I'm going on a Working Holiday Visa I really want to make the most of the time I can spend there. Has anyone gone to London on a working visa before?

I'm really interested in the nightlife and the clubs. It seems so different to the dull town I live in and I love the music scene over there. Is it a safe place to go out? I know that in Australia (even though it's not paticularly bad) there's always a fear of being a single female going out alone due to drink spiking etc.

Your experiences and opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

where to eat & hotels at Heathrow [17 Apr 2007|08:10am]

Where to eat: I'm mostly vegetarian, and not keen on big meals; I tend to like smaller, on-the-go eats. Any recommendations for places to go? I'm especially looking for bakeries because I have a few daytrips out of London planned and want to take some small snacks along with me.

Hotels at Heathrow: I need to book a hotel at Heathrow for a night because my flight leaves early. Any suggestions on ones to pick or avoid? (ETA: Price range is... low to mid. I'm only there for a night, so I don't need luxury, but I don't want a cockroach as a bedmate either *g*)

Thanks!

I'm planning a trip to the UK this summer. I've already got places to stay in Edinburgh and Cardiff, but I'd loooooove to stay in London again. So, if I could couch surf at your place or if you know anyone who would let me couch surf for a few days, that'd be fantastic. If you're ever in the states, you'd always be able to stay in Los Angeles with me.

Please let me know if you've got any ideas. Thanks!

Cheers,

where to stay in London? [14 Mar 2007|05:17pm]
BERJAYA

Hi there =) I'm looking for help with accommodations in London. I'll be there for about 2 weeks (April 30 – May 15). I'm trying to avoid hostels, because I've had too many bad experiences with them.

Basically, I'm looking for a moderately-priced* single room with ensuite in a decent area, with good tube access. I don't need fancy. I can't afford fancy. Besides, more of my time will spent outside the room than in.

(* = I know I won't get anything "cheap" in London, in part because of the Canadian-English exchange divide, and mostly because, well, it’s London.)

I'm also looking for suggestions for things to do/see. I'm not really into clubs & pubs, and I don't just want to do the typical touristy things: I'm more interested in what Londoners love about their city than what a brochure says I need to see.

Any suggestions?
