1. I walked up to 85 Degrees for my after lunch walk and they have a new smoothie! It's ube, coconut, and mango and is really tasty. The tagline said it's halo-halo influenced and it definitely has that vibe. The coconut is not just coconut flavor, for example, but chunks of macapuno.

I'd get it again!

2. I love the expression on Jasper's face.

I managed to sell several things when I made one of these posts back at the end of June, so I wanted to give it one more try and see if I could find homes for anything else. While it didn't work out the week that I was off work, I'd still really like to take care of switching to a smaller storage unit sooner rather than later, and anything extra I can raise would definitely help on that front.

I'm not sure if I didn't set my alarm this morning or if I turned it off and went to bed in such a daze that I didn't retain any memory of doing so. Either way, it threw off the day to the point didn't have nearly as much in it as I'd wanted.

I've double checked that it's set for tomorrow.

I've also grabbed another case of seltzer for the upcoming heat wave over the next few days. I hadn't realized I'd trained myself to rely on it until I saw I was down to one cold can in the fridge. It's a little uncanny at this point.

In DoorDash's favour, they do refund your money when they cancel on you, which Skip did not, only giving me a credit instead. Or maybe it was because I cancelled Skip and not the other way around.

My campaign to stop the Bell scammers from harassing me has not succeeded in stopping the robocalls, but the minute a live person gets on the line they hang up immediately at sight of my number.

This being the hottest day of the week I stayed in with AC and fans and did not die. Have been gingerly doing
those spot moving exercises I should have been doing all year and haven't. Possibly I can do it now because the weather is dry: there's a reason I spent the snowy winter and rainy spring unmoving on the couch, grudging even standing up to get things. I see no evidence that all the feet flexing and ankle twirling has increased blood to my extremities and decreased the water bloat there like it'ssupposed to, but I suppose it can't hurt.

I have this little idea for a spooky setting where terminology for strange happenings is created from their resemblance to the characteristics of famous horror writers' work.

(Cf. [personal profile] sovay's "Aickman field" that I keep going on and on about because I like it so much, and which I have refined I think to be not an area of increased improbability but rather a region of numinous uncertainty, sometimes uncomfortably erotic)

Could also be for a specific book ex. a "Shining zone" but I really like this device as also a diagnostic of a writer's preoccupations over time; both a tiny critical appraisal and a fun story element.

Anyway what I am looking for, should you have opinions and enjoy sharing them, is your thoughts on writers of horror or ghost stories who

a) have a characteristic vibe across tales that you feel you can approximately describe and would enjoy attempting to approach in this way (ex. melancholy yet mordantly funny body horror; chilling, wrong-footing, and profoundly alienating ghost stories; etc.)

b) are generally not straight(ish) white cisgender guys, for lo I have beaucoup d'exemples historiques of those fellas (if you have a really good one, okay, I don't want to miss out, but I am trying to cast a wider net)

So it's both a hopeful reading recommendation request (who are your uncanny faves? ancient or modern) and an opportunity to suggest a possible type of uncanny effect that a group of eager/weary young bureaucrats might encounter and geekily name after their favorite writers. (Tell me about a Carter Tide, or Due Architecture, or a Gilman Loop.)

§rf§

PS Full credits obvs. should this actually go anywhere. Might make a fun shared world concept.

PPS I don't need to create a Lovecraft effect. People are ON that. It is COVERED.

PPPS Although. Having said that. A Lovecraft effect that was something like "a person is so bigoted and paranoid that they imagine uncanny effects where there are none" is kind of a fun idea.

Today I deleted and redownloaded about half the Big Finish on my phone app
because the first set had downloaded as many small pieces instead of one long audiobook
and when I tried playing Iceberg it said the next section was Farewell, though I didn't play it to find out if that was the picture or audio being wrong.

All fixed now.

I don't tend to keep all the Owen audios on my phone because one needs a certain degree of mental fortitude to listen to the darkest stuff. I listened to Iceberg, Lease of Life, and The Last Beacon this morning, then played computer games for a bit because I concluded my head was not in fact in a good place to relisten to the undead Owen sequence. Iceberg was dark enough. Good, very, but dark.

I am sleeping in the daytime this week but noisy things happen in the daytime.

Still, at least it is ordinary heatwave and not the sort that can only happen with climate crisis. My flat is actually pretty pleasant as long as temperatures stay in the 20s and cool down at night.

I'm still not very interactive though.

Also I keep finding people in the tags on tumblr getting enthusiastic about the audios and just when I'm being yaay more fans they'll start asking where they can find them all, and they don't mean by downloading them from the BBC or listening on the Big Finish app or website or listening on any of the streaming services where they also are. Big Finish will happily still sell it to you, including free samples ever free day friday. If all the people who enthuse about it on the internet actually paid for a download they might not have cancelled the series. They need money to go in before they make any more.

I think the last episode Fare Well sold pretty okay though, because that is up on Last Chance On CD, meaning less than 50 copies left. Some of the very early ones are also on that page so it is quite the contrast. Coffee was out in 2021 and it is still on that page https://www.bigfinish.com/last-chance-on-cd so the extra attention did well for that last one.

... there should still be more, but, it is Big Finish, they will certainly try if they can figure out how to make the money.

The thirteenth Doctor audios are also on Last Chance, and they're still in pre order. 1500 CD copies isn't much, they call them collector copies now, but they're selling.

... I am running out of space in my flat for CDs. I may have to start prioritising. But not today.

Okay I shall go eat.

  1. Temperature increase in the flat as a whole (... ignoring the study...) today was under 2°C! We have established that ratchet straps will indeed hold the cover on the study windows to at least reduce solar gain while leaving them open for air flow purposes!
  2. Achieved BLACKBERRIES for A. :)
  3. Relocated my garlic chives, which are still alive!
  4. I am continuing to get useful information out of the videos I took during yesterday's gym session. (Special interest continues interesting, at least to me.)
  5. A got me a wee handheld battery-operated milk frother (the tiny whisk-onna-stick kind) with a Travel Case. Presents for Alex! ... that I have promptly used to make a protein shake for, specifically, A, who has discovered over the past half week or so that They Are A Friend and now wishes to join me in consuming Protein Slurry. Hence Gift. I am very amused.

Previous poll review
In the Music listening habits poll, "all the time" and "sometimes/occasionally" tied for first place with 27.7%, followed by "most days" with 25.5% (within the margin of error, so it's really a three-way tie). "Only in specific settings" garnered 19.1%.

For background noise, 57.4% said they like quiet, and 44.7% prefer music. (I think this says something about the kind of people who like Dreamwidth.) And in ticky-boxes, more hugs won with 89.1%, followed by hugs (82.6%) and lemons on the lemon tree (54.3%). Thank you for your votes! ♥

Reading
A bit more of Borders of Infinity by Bujold, read by Grover Gardner, and some graded reading in Chinese (the one about the stray cat finding a home, and her adopted mother, the penniless student; now I'm onto one about a doctor impersonating a student so she can go back to campus and feed the cats there, only now she's going on a date with a student? I'm hoping he'll turn out to actually be older too). I am slow and occasionally tripped up by new grammar configurations, but enjoying it immensely.

Cdramas/Kdramas
We finished Miraculous Brothers. Kind of a slow ending, but it was great. Now Andrew and I have started a) The Apartment Job, about a retired gangster (possibly autistic-coded?) trying to rip off the maintenance fund of a huge apartment complex; and b) Agent Kim Reactivated, about a retired North Korean super-spy living a quiet, humdrum life in South Korea, who loses his shit when his daughter is kidnapped. The latter is full of groups of people being terrible so we can enjoy seeing them get beaten up, ie, lots of bullying, terrorising the helpless, etc. It's also cartoonishly violent, quirkily enjoyable, and has So Ji-sub.

Pru and I finished Love Scout (♥ ♥ ♥) and are about to start May I Help You (2022), about a woman who works in a funeral parlour and sees ghosts, and an odd-jobs guy who helps her carry out the ghosts' last requests.

And I'm still obsessed with The First Frost, about two wounded, gunshy people who've loved each other since they were at high school but have a hard time getting past their own defences. (CW: sexual assault, workplace sexual harassment.) It's one of those "every tiny bit of progress feels like a triumph" kind of shows. I'm not sure what I'm going to follow it up with once I'm done.

Other TV
Not a lot of other TV. Legends (UK) once a week with a friend; White Collar and Bluey with my sister; finished Fisk. Watched a few movies: Nonnas (very gentle light drama with Vince Vaughan), Smallfoot (animated yeti (雪人) movie with confusing cultural aspects and unnecessary musical numbers), and Toy Story 5 in the cinema (fun enough, but I always forget I'm not really into the franchise). A bit of The Rest is Politics on Youtube (interviews with Jacinda Ardern, Helen Clark, Volodymyr Zelenskyy).

Audio entertainment
Cross Party Lines, a bit of Dreaming Against the Machine, some Coherent Podcast episodes to help me with political submissions, and a metric ton of ChinesePod beginner and elementary lessons. I'm about three weeks behind on Writing Excuses.

Writing/making things
My writing time has mostly been taken up with the Slo-mo Guardian Rewatch on [community profile] sid_guardian and political submissions, but I did just edit a flashfic; I might even manage to finish it for this [community profile] fan_flashworks round. (I wrote it in Chinese first, translated it, and then had to fix the things that I either didn't think of or didn't know how to express in Chinese. ;-p)

Life/health/mental state things
One more political submission over the weekend. That should be it for a while, since the government has (hopefully) run out of time to start more terrible things before the election.

My email inbox is neglected and overflowing. We're in the cold, dark part of the year, and it's inevitably taking its toll. But I'm okay. I'm hunkering and studying and otherwise puddling along.

House
I have quotes from the builder and electrician, and I've paid for the oven. Wheels are in motion (hopefully next month! *knock on wood*). I still need to a) paint the baseboards in the kitchen, and b) choose a new toilet.

Language Learning
My Chinese study continues apace. I got three days of free Premium on Duolingo over the weekend and went hard, but mostly my focus has shifted to HelloChinese (grammar, cultural notes, characters, "immersive lessons") and DuChinese (reading, flashcards). And the podcast (sample dialogues, pronunciation).

Good things
Lunches with friends. The Slo-mo Rewatch. A wealth of language learning resources. Writing. Looking forward to trying out new dishes (and also baking) in the new oven.

My latest M.A. Carrick collaboration with Alyc Helms is out today! Retailer links for all formats are on our site . . .

cover art for The Eye of Leviathan by M.A. Carrick, showing a half-circle of a green-tinged map of the Otherworld above a half-circle of an engraving of a sea beast. The intervening space is filled with gold filigree, and joined by a blood-red wax seal with a ship sailing between tall cliffs toward a starry sky, with tentacles in the waves below.

In an alternate Spanish Golden Age, where the map becomes the territory and mapmakers are the architects of reality, the Council of the Sea Beyond has risen to unrivaled power, exploiting the world’s most precious resources for their own gain.

Determined to discover how cosmographers pin down the islands of the Otherworld, Estevan seeks power with the Council of the Sea Beyond – but he risks the exposure of his own secrets, too. For he is a changeling, a faerie masquerading as a mortal. And for a faerie to enter the mortal world like that, a child must go the other way . . .

The Hungry Girl, the nameless human daughter whose place he took, has grown up opposite her “brother.” Lost among the fae and desperate to find some purpose for her existence, she leaps at the chance to help a group of Spanish explorers in the Sea Beyond . . . only to be horrified at the atrocities they commit.

Soon the unlikely siblings will need to overcome their rivalry — because only together can they bring down Spain’s worlds-spanning empire and save the homes they have come to love.

BERJAYA

Image_description: )

During the first few months of 2021, as quarantine wore on, I was compulsively drawn to a version of this image that included the rippling raindrops; a fresh cool draught of clear rain and new green growth seemed to be the most appetizing thing imaginable.

This image being one that’s undergone a lot of gankage and mutation (including the addition of the animated rain), I managed to track down the original: “Garden of Glass” from 6 March 2010 by [deviantart.com profile] UgurDoyduk (https://www.deviantart.com/ugurdoyduk/art/Garden-of-Glass-156364361):
