First post here.

Managed to catch the last 20 minutes of this lovely Canadian short film The Armoire. It showed at TIFF. The website's here: http://thearmoire.ca/

The Armoire is producer Mark Montefiore's third Bravo!FACT-funded short and his first time with a film at TIFF. From writer director Jamie Travis is an exploration of the dark recesses of suburbia that is comedy, a horror, and a melodrama at once. It begins with a game of hide-and-seek after which Aaron's friend Tony is never found. The mystery of their relationship - and of their queer attachment to the armoire in Aaron's bedroom - can only be revealed, it turns out, through hypnosis. At once a comedy, a horror and a melodrama, Jamie Travis' The Armoire is the finale to his 'Saddest Children in the World' trilogy.

Blew me away, but I have no idea where to watch the rest of it. Does anyone know if there was a dvd released of Jamie Travis' short works? Or somewher online to watch it?

LOVE the spaguetti western of Sergio Leone and LOVE practically all the characters. This minor fandom deserves a fanvid, although that fanvid is mine xDDDD And the lyrics from this wonderful song of One Republic suggest me a perfect portrait about the essence of the movies. If you like it too, ENJOY IT! ^^

BERJAYAA Korean indie drama that follows two young girls who are left by their mother (who goes searching for their estranged father). The girls are sent to live with various, incompetent relatives such as an alcoholic aunt and out on the farm with their grandparents. Writer/Director So Yong Kim does an excellent job of establishing intimacy by using a lot of close up shots on the faces of the two very expressive young actors. Though this film is obviously shot on a low budget, it has excellent cinematography, thanks to Kim's sharply focused aesthetic vision.

My initial thoughts when I heard about this movie was that it would be an overly sentimental tear-jerker, but that turned out not to be the case at all. In fact, if there is a knock on this film, it may be that it lacks strong enough conflict to really resonate. However, to me the movie is a lot like the song used in the its trailer, "Layers" by Asobi Seksu - it's beauty comes from its understatement.

For all of those who are great fans of surrealist film, Jan Svankmajer's (Little Otik, Faust) version of Alice In Wonderland is beautiful and strange! He combines brilliant stop motion and live action, minimal dialogue, and dark, rusty colors to create one of my favorite films!

It's that time again. The West Orange Film Festival is, once again, bringing some classic films back to the big screen. This year's festival begins on January 11th and ends on March 5th. As usual, films will be shown on a Sunday at a 2pm time slot and then the following Thursday at a 7pm time slot.

Here is the screening scheduleCollapse )

Based on the screenings that I've been to, most include a short introduction by the film society, sometimes with a guest speaker (critic, film professor, etc.) Usually, they also include a short post-screening discussion. And every one that I've been to has been projected from film, not from a DVD. I'm definitely there for at least a few of these.

Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro produces director Juan Antonio Bayona's gothic frightener about a long-abandoned orphanage with a particularly troubling past. As a child, young orphan Laura spent her formative years being cared for by the staff of a large orphanage located by the Spanish seaside. Those were some of the happiest years of Laura's life, and now, 30 years later, the former charge returns to the dilapidated institution with her husband, Carlos, and their seven-year-old son, Simon, to reopen the orphanage as a facility for disabled children. However, something ominous haunts the darkened hallways of this silent, stately manor. When Simon's behavior begins to grow increasingly bizarre and malicious, Laura and Carlos start to suspect that the mysterious surroundings have awoken something ominous in the young boy's imagination. It's not long before Laura, too, is drawn into this disturbing web and the repressed memories of the past come flooding back in a terrifying torrent of tension and deeply disturbing revelations. With opening day drawing near and their situation growing increasingly grim by the hour, Simon attempts to write off their son's bizarre behavior as a desperate bid to get more attention from his distracted parents. Laura isn't so easily convinced of this theory, though, and soon embarks on a desperate quest to unearth the terrible secret that lurks in the old house, waiting for just the right moment to inflict devastating damage on both her and her family.

Awesome movie!! If anyone has a chance, take a look at this movie. Even though it's all in spanish, the subtitles are not hard to read. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 84% I give it atleast a 95%. Guillermo del Toro is amazing, and I am totally looking forward to more of his movies. I was for sure a Pan's Labyrinth fan.

The West Orange Classic Film Festival is starting up again at the AMC Theater in West Orange this month. I went yesterday to see "Spartacus" on the big screen, and they have a lot more coming up. This year, they've even added a couple of foreign films to the list, which I'm looking forward to. Here's the schedule:
