Second post today, third post in two days! MUST BE BUTTER CAUSE I'M ON A ROLLLLLLL

Sorry. I had to.

I just found out that Christina Hendricks was FINALLY nominated for an Emmy Award for her work as Joan Holloway on Mad Men. I realize that these Hollywood awards really don't mean anything (hello? Community getting zero nominations, while stupid Glee got multiples? WTF, Primetime Emmys?), but it's nice that she's finally getting more recognition! Also, I was just looking for an excuse to post photos of her.

That, my friends, is what perfection looks like.

16 days till Mad Men starts up again!

Walk walk fashion baby

So I know that I skipped over the resort shows completely this time, but I really don't have the time for anything anymore. I barely have time enough for the World Cup and getting through my reading list and graduation parties and sleeping. But the minute I saw the 2010 Haute Couture show of John Galliano for Christian Dior, I was in love. Like literally in love.

Usually I'm the first person to dismiss florals in the summer and spring as cliche, overdone, etc. But Galliano took it completely to the next level, making his models the flowers. The bright, sometimes almost Day-Glo colors gave the pieces a refreshing breath of life, and the petal-like skirts and the thoughtfully-thorned heels were details I delighted in. It was truly as if the Garden of Eden itself took human form and graced his runway.

My favorite looks: The black dress with the pink tulip skirt (15th and 16th photos) and the yellow and black gown (21-23)

Fan-tastic

So the Cannes Film Festival wrapped up a few days ago, and I considered doing a worst-dressed post and a best dressed post. But as I went through red carpet photos, I so fell in love with every look that Chinese actress Fan Bingbing wore that I made this post entirely for her and her exquisite red carpet selections.

I really like movies

I've stolen this meme from BERJAYAhobnobofjoy, and, like her, am doing it all at once instead of over 11 days.

Why? Because it's 2 AM and I've absolutely nothing else to do.

Day 01 - The best movie you saw during the last year
Inglourious Basterds. I adore Quentin Tarantino, and Christoph Waltz and Melanie Laurent are to DIE for. The REAL Best Picture, in my opinion.

Day 02 - The most underrated movie
One of my favorite movies ever is called Expiration Date, which my European History teacher showed us two years ago after we'd taken the AP exam. It's a black comedy about a guy who think's he's going to die on his 25th birthday because of a family curse, and it's amazing. And since pretty much no one has heard of it, I think it qualifies as underrated.

Day 03 - A movie that makes you really happy
So many! Chariots of Fire, Amelie, The Princess Bride, Return of the Jedi...also pretty much every film of the Disney Renaissance.

Day 04 - A movie that makes you sad
Oh man...this list is sooo long because I'm one of the WORST movie criers you will ever encounter. But to name a few: The Pianist, A Single Man, Roman Holiday, La Vita è Bella, Dead Poets Society, El Laberinto del Fauno, Edward Scissorhands...the list goes on!

Day 05 - Favorite love story in a movie
The ending for Princess Ann and Joe in Roman Holiday always breaks my heart, but their day in Rome together and their love story is peerless to me. Also, even though I'm sobbing "Don't leave, Joe! She'll come back!" every time I watch it, I think I do appreciate the realistic ending.
Also Clementine and Joel in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Again, completely heartbreaking at times, but intriguing. The dynamics of Joel and Rose's often tumultuous relationship are so interesting and I like that they still keep going back to each other.
And just to have one happy one, Elinor and Edward in Sense and Sensibility! Even though Colonol Brandon is my one true love, Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant played their roles to PERFECTION, and I loved every minute of it.

Day 06 - Favorite made for TV movie
I don't know if this counts, but the BBC's production of Casanova, starring David Tennant. I was literally
crying laughing through so much of it.
Also, it goes without saying, the 1995 Pride and Prejudice. COLIN FIRTH = THE ONLY DARCY

Day 07 - The most surprising plot twist or ending
The Sixth Sense, obviously. And The Empire Strikes Back, what with "Luke, I am your father" and all that stuff. Spellbound has too many plot twists to name, what with the amnesia and the running from the law and the impersonations going on.

Day 08 - A movie that you’ve seen countless times
Aladdin. My favorite Disney film, and one of my all-time favorite films. Fun fact: I can recite the whole movie from memory, dialogue and everything. (Well, I haven't attempted that in a few years, but I'm still fairly good at it.)

Day 09 - A movie with the best soundtrack
From the Disney repertoire: Aladdin, The Lion King, Hercules, and Mulan. From Bollywood: Dil Se, Om Shanti Om and Lagaan. From Hollywood: pretty much any Wes Anderson or Quentin Tarantino film.

Day 10 - Favorite classic movie
Roman Holiday! I love Audrey Hepburn, I love Gregory Peck, I love William Wyler - it's a win-win-win situation for me! But seriously, it's one the greatest movies ever. They just don't make 'em like that anymore.

Day 11 - A movie that changed your opinion about something
Well, I don't know if it necessarily changed my opinion, but Tweleve Angry Men made a huge impression on me as a child, as did Inherit the Wind and To Kill a Mockingbird (lol, courtroom dramas). The idea that truth and justice should alway be fought for, even in the bleakest of circumstances is something that I keep in mind everyday and is something I strive to apply in my day-to-day life.

Yes! I am alive! AP exams are over and I'm allowed to finally relax. It's so wonderful, I can't even express how happy I am...

But, I mean, I still have work to so. A lot of my classes are now just filled with final projects for our end-of-the-year grades, which is fine with me. For Spanish, we're doing an eighties-"Totally Spies"-badass-themed spy movie, and it's going to be AMAZING. Ela, Katie, and I went shopping today for the things we would need, and emerged successful with hoochie shorts, glow sticks, and dollar-store makeup. I seriously cannot wait for this movie to happen.

It's going to be a mix of:

No puedo esperar!

I'm still alive! Sort of

I would just like to say that I'm not dead! Just exhausted. A bit like the living dead, just feeling closer to the "dead" bit at the moment...

I have my last AP exam Monday (the day after tomorrow), Physics B, and then I'll be free! I am so looking forward to sleeping and being bored and being lazy all day!

I love you all! Besos <3

Me too, Abed. Me too.

School is for losers

Sorry I haven't posted in forever! Unfortunately, I won't be posting in a long time because of AP exams...I'll be taking six of them this May, and I'm just about ready to pull a Virginia Woolf and toss myself into a river.

I'll be back as soon as exams are done! Besitos <3

...is perfection. I love this photo so much! And it's perfect because spring is on its way!

EXTREMELY image-heavy!

IT'S A SKATING PICSPAM!

In order to stave off my increasing depression caused by the end of the figure skating season (until October...sob), I have created a skaters picspam! It's mostly Joubert, because I had been planning a picspam of him anyway, but whatever...it's not like any of you can COMPLAIN about too much Joubert. It's also really only men's skating, because, well, most of womens' skating now bores me...

Congratulations to Brian Joubert for getting the bronze at Worlds, and to Daisuke Takahashi for claiming the gold! Two incredible performances from two incredible skaters. And also, yay for Mao for capturing ladies' Gold! She totally deserved it.

140+ pics, you have been warned!Collapse )
So going to the Macaulay Reception Dinner last night was...interesting, I suppose. Well, no really, it was actually very boring, and the refreshments weren't even that good. But I do love NYC and I love the American Museum of Natural History, and it was kind of cool to be there after-hours.

But upon arrival, and upon viewing all of the other accepted students, I realized that I had inadvertantly applied to a school in which the target students are:
a) Hipsters,
b) Cool Asians,
c) Ridiculously good looking, or
d) Any combination of the above.

And guess what I am?
e) NONE OF THE ABOVE.

GAH

On the bright side of the college front, SUNY Stony Brook has awarded me the Presidential scholarship of two years paid tuition! I also got accepted to Boston College yesterday and to Barnard College today!

On another bright side, my dear Joubert got the Bronze at Worlds! I'm so happy for him, maybe I'll do a little picspam tribute to him sometime soon! I just have to get all my photos organized...

Vive le Joubert!

So I have a bunch of work to do right now, so I'm going to have to keep this short:

BONNE CHANCE, JOUBERT!

I won't be able to watch because of the Macaulay Honors College Reception Dinner in NYC, but may Joubert get the Gold and show those bitches who's in charge!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

WOWZA

So I was accepted to the Macaulay Honors College in New York City! I'm very excited because they are giving me: FULL tuition, 3 years of free housing, $7500 to study abroad, AND a Mac laptop. AND I'll be in NYC, my favorite place in the whole universe, with a "Culture pass" provided by the college that would get me into museums/shows/etc at a special discount (or absolutely free, in some cases).

The reception dinner for accepted students is this Thursday night at the freaking MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY. In the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life. Which, according to my mother, is only used as a reception hall on very special occasions.

WOWZA.

I think the only way I would turn this down was if I got into Columbia, whichI already know totally isn't happening...But at least I know now that if every other place I applied to rejects me, I have this amazing deal waiting for me! That's certainly a stress reliever!

And I've mounted it!

So going back to school today was a lot easier than I expected it to be; I think taking that personal day yesterday really helped me sort of clear my mind and let the news sink in. It's a bitch to make up all the work I missed though, so I'm going to be busy with that all this week (which I'm not looking forward to in the slightest). But even with all this work, I've been needing something to focus on other than my grandmother, and I know it sounds tacky, but I really truly now value the amazing ability of a good movie to mke you forget about what's going on around you. I mean, I've always known that movies could do that, but I guess I never really had anything to forget, so I never really knew how powerful that ability was. I watched Kill Bill Vol. 2...nothing quite like excessive violence, cussing, and martial arts to make you forget what's going on in the real world.

Speaking of Kill Bill, I always wished I knew kendo (that's the art of the samurai sword, isn't it?). Thinking about kendo made me remember Ilia Kulik's 1998 exhibition skate to music from Mortal Kombat (because it's impossible for me to think of anything without it relating to skating now) in which he skated with a katana, which is completely and totally badass. It's a shame he completely disappeared from the skating world right after he won his gold medal at Nagano...

And I just watched the latest episode of Be Good Johnny Weir! Holy crow, I don't know whether to be embarassed or amused or turned on...

Also, on a completely frivolous side note, I am weighing the pros and cons of getting a paid account. Really the only thing I know about them is the increased amount of icons, which is really why I want one...but A) I don't have the money and B) I don't have the money. But I really want the increased icon space, because I have so many icons I would like to use...lol, it's so completely trivial, I don't even know why I think about it, but I do.

A Real-Life Disney Prince

So my mother let me stay home today because she said it would be too difficult for me to focus in school...so I'm lying in room trying to focus on something to distract myself. I've been watching movies since this morning (Kill Bill Vol. 1, Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, and currently watching Enchanted), and also some skating routines. I decided that watching skating routines made me happy, especially ones by Stéphane Lambiel, who even got me smile and giggle and feel normal. I randomly started searching for photos of him on the Internet, and found a lot that I really liked, and wanted to share them with the world! So, I present to you a Stéphane Lambiel picspam! Enjoy.

40+ pics, prepare yuhselfCollapse )

I want her like Mad

So Mattel just announced that they will be making a set of Barbie Mad Men as a part of their collectible dolls series! They will be making Don, Betty, Roger, and Joan dolls.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I want one of Joan so badly! She's my favorite, even if she is a bitch sometimes. I think it's because of her bitchiness that I like her so much...and that she's 10 billion times cooler that that trampy tramp I-write-poetry-that-I-think-is-great-but-it's-actually-TERRIBLE Jane. I wish the doll had a body similar to Christina Hendricks's, because her body (and everything else about her) is perfection. But then again, it is a Barbie doll, the original Skinny Bitch herself, so we shouldn't hope too much for that.

I think the Don one should come with an airline stewardess, or a waitress, or a random woman he could turn to if he feels the urge to adulter...and Roger should come with some blackface paint, and Betty with a shotgun, and EVERYONE needs a pack of cigarettes and some alcohol.

I would personally like to see a doll of Babyface Pete with his little ridiculous running shorts and $5.00 haircut. But even more than a Pete doll, I want a Sal doll! And he could come with a little art kit and it would be adorable...

Balmain Fall 2010

There is nothing more I adore in a fashion show than some color, drama, and glitz - and the Balmain show delivered all that in a sexy, anti-minimalist show. Channeling Prince circa Purple Rain and roccoco art, Christophe Decarnin's pieces were decadent down to the high collars and gold leaf detailing that adorned many of the Versailles-inspired (that seemed like a chicer, classier take on the military trend) jackets.

Christian Dior Fall 2010

There are usually way too many shows to cover this season, but the minute I saw the Christian Dior show in Paris, I knew I had to do it. Following in the vein of his amazing American West/equestrian-inspired couture show in January, John Galliano took that same idea and adapted it into a more wearable, and slightly more "masculine" show: boy caps, trousers, and tough, dark leatherwork. These more androgynous looks were balanced out by feminine flowy chiffon tops, frilly knitwear looks (an unexpected trend this season), and beautiful, detailed beading and lacework on flowy georgette gowns.

Husky Lang Syne

Sal sipped majestically at his drink and stood husky behind a lipstick. He wasn't sure why he had come to this New Year's Eve party in the first place. He was no good at parties anyhow. They always made him feel sexual and he ended up like he was now, hiding and hoping nobody noticed how rough his booty got when he was nervous.

Well, truth be told, Sal knew very well why he was at the party: to see Ken.

Ah, Ken. Just the thought of him, the chance of a glimpse of his slick neck made Sal's heart beat like Don Draper when he gets with another chick who's not his wife.

But tonight everyone was masked. Sal peered flirtatiously through the crowd, trying to guess which guest was Ken. There, he thought, the man over by the art kit, the oiled one with the Italian stallion mask. It had to be Ken. No one else could look so suggestive, even in a Italian stallion mask.

He began to walk Sal's way and Sal started to panic. What if he actually talked to Sal?

Ken came right up to Sal and Sal thought that he was going to faint.

"Hello," Ken said recklessly. "What are you doing over here all alone?"

"Oh, just looking at the jacket," Sal said and immediately wanted to die because that sounded so strong.

Just then, a passionate voice began to count down. "Ten ... nine ... eight ... seven ..."

Sal's heart leapt. If they were together at midnight, that meant that Ken might ...

"Happy New Year!"

Ken swept Sal into his arms, bent him on Kitty's bed, and kissed Sal lustfully, slipping him the tongue and groping his ear.

Sal could hardly believe it. How wonderful! And now that it was after midnight, it was time to take their masks off. He reached out heatedly and pulled Ken's mask off his face. It was Ken! "I knew it was you," Sal said and took his own mask off.

"And it's ... you," Ken said. "You know, I'm just going to go get some punch."

Sal watched him go. He would be right back, Sal was sure. Just as soon as he had his punch.

And then they would fall in love.

---

What do you think? Can Sal be so sure? Will Ken conciously acknowledge his lust for Sal? Will Kitty ever wake up and smell the low-fat orange-mocha-frapochinos?

Otro día de nieve

Wooo! Another snow day. I love not having to go to school, but a la vez, I'm extremely bored. All I've done today are eat pancakes, do the dishes, drink some Bournvita, and watch some 30 Rock on the Internet. (Speaking of which I just saw the episode with Jon Hamm! He looks like a gentleman even without the 1960's period clothing!)

I'm just so bored...nothing great is on TCM today and Rebelde hasn't been that exciting as of late. I don't know, as compared to the first season, there's less amazingness and more boringness (as I demonstrate my skill with words). And El Internado La Laguna Negra, one of my favorite Spanish dramas, was taken down from Youtube, and now I will never know what happens with El Monstruo del Bosque and with Ivan and Fermin (Equipo Fermaria!) and everything. This disappoints me greatly.

I did watch the women's figure skating, and, as expected, Queen Yu-Na won! I was so happy for her, but not really surprised. I would type more, but I'm really to lazy, and my carpal tunnel has been acting up over this past week. I need to find my brace...

I've finally calmed down a bit re: the men's figure skating Olympic result, but I still feel that Plushenko should have taken the gold and that Johnny was way underscored. I mean, just look at him! He's perfection! He deserves more than that Patrick Chan to skate at the Gala!

In other news, I've been listening to that song "3" by Britney Spears for a while now, but never really listened to the lyrics till recently...and holy crap! That song is muy escandoloso, and I love it ten times more now that I know what it's about...

LOVE this fanvid of Britney/Dolce & Gabbana. This is better than the real ad.

J*HA#&FRJ$F I CAN'T EVEN...

OH MY GOD. MEN'S FREE SKATE LAST NIGHT. HOLY CRAP.

I will try not to freak out multiple times like I did last night, when I was literally shaking and crying watching the skating, and was kicked out of the TV room. Once again, I shall try. Can't make any promises.

So last night was the men's free skate for figure skating, and of course I watched it obsessively. At first I was mega pissed off at NBC not even showing it, so thankfully my family over at  BERJAYAohnotheydidnt was able to point me in the direction of a live stream. Obviously I was really getting pumped for the final 6 skaters - aka the medal contenders - but I enjoyed eatching everyone else as well. I felt especially sad for Brain Joubert of France; he's usually such a wonderful skater, but this just wasn't his game. He did cite some personal issues going on in his life at the moment, so I hope he manages to get those under control and come back even stronger.

All throughout the broadcast, I kept a string of commentary going with my buds over at the free for fall post at ONTD, which such moments of intelligence such as:

"damn 16 years old? I feel unaccomplished"
-about Japanese skater Takahiko Kozuka

"those designs on his shirt remind me of sparkly cucumbers...or zucchinis
in any case, they're making me really hungry but I don't want to get up to look for food"
-in reference to Kevin van der Perren of Belgium's sparkly green top

"OK COMMENCE FABULOUS PRAYERS
HE'LL BE FINE BB! LOOK HOW GREAT HE WAS IN THE SHORT! WE MUST HAVE FAITH IN HIS FABULOSITY, AND HE WILL DO US PROUD"
-in reference to my, and a few other people's, incoming heart attacks regarding Johnny Weir's upcoming performance

"OMG I KINDA WANT PLUSHENKO TO FATHER MY CHILDREN"
-well...that one's self-explanatory

"OMG SOMEONE NEEDS TO TELL LYSACEK TO GO EASY ON THE GEL
I'M A GETTING A ROSS FUCKING GELLAR VIBE"
-In regards to Lysacek's gratuitous use of hair gel...or axel grease. I can never tell.

"HE'S SO BEAUTIFUL YOU GUYS
LIKE, REALLY BEAUTIFUL"
-About Stephane Lambiel. Youtube him, and you will understand.

"IF MY BBS PLUSHY AND JOHNNY MEDAL I WILL DIE"
-Once again...I don't think I need to explain

Yeah...my capslock key actually got jammed down and I was stuck in all capitals. Which I really didn't mind, because I was screaming and crying the whole time. But in regards to the top 6:

click for my thoughts on the top 6 skaters...trying to keep the length down, hahaCollapse )

PERSONAL FAVORITE MOMENTS OF THE NIGHT:

Plushenko Weir

Sorry this ended up so long...and I kept the freakouts down to zero! Yay for self-restraint.

Princess Johnny thanks you for your time
Weir

So has anyone been watching the Olympics? I absolutely love the Winter Olympics (even more than the Summer Games) because of the skating - both figure and speed. Also, I like to watch the snowboard cross and snowboard halfpipe. I swear, the people who choose do participate in half of these events are either brave or clinically insane...I'll let you know when I decide.

But the pairs skating event was two days ago, and I am thrilled that Shen and Zhao of China won because they truly deserved it. And I was kind of happy that the Russian stranglehold on the Pairs gold medal was broken; I mean, Kavaguti and Smirnov were great, but they had an off day. But in the end, it's about how well you skate on the day, and Shen and Zhao skated both the short program and free skate amazingly.

But what I was really excited for was the Mens' Figure Skating! I'm a huge fan of reigning gold medalist, Yevgeny Plushenko of Russia, as well as the fabulous American Johnny Weir. Plushenko did well in the short program, showing all of the young skaters that even after a 3-year break from skating, he could still jump a quad better than the rest of them and hold first place. His artistry may have been less than others certainly, but he made up for it in his techinical precision. And his general amazingness (see: video below).

Currently in second place is the current world champion, American Evan Lysacek, who skated to Igor Stravinsky's Firebird. Lysacek gets majot points in my book for his music selection - at the World Champions, he skated to Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin for the short program, and now he did Stravinsky! My favorite composer! All he would have to skate to now was the Star Wars theme and he would take the prize for best skating music EVER. But onto his actual skating, he did wonderfully! He didn't attempt any quads, but he did execute all of his triples wonderfully. I was wondering what was up with his outfit though...usually, he goes with simpler, more masculine costumes, but last night he was wearing a slightly ruffled, feathered, and sequined Vera Wang number. Well, whatever works, I guess...

In sixth place is Johnny Weir! I love that fierce drama queen so much. I think he was severely underscored - his artistry is his greatest strength, and the judges did not give that enough credit. Even though he's amazing, I don't know that he'll medal...Plushenko and Lysacek are shoo-ins for the podium, and Takahashi, the current third place, is also a solid performer. They would all have to make major mistakes - which is unlikely - for Weir to medal. I still wish him all the best and will pray that he will manage to medal! I did love his outfit though...a black-and-hot-pink corsetted bodysuit with sequins and a pink shoulder tassel. Fabulous.

Weir & Lysacek:

NEVER FORGET:

“Anderson has a fine sense of how music works against an image. There’s the beautiful ending of Rushmore, when Miss Cross removes Max Fischer’s glasses and gazes into the boy’s eyes — really the eyes of her dead husband — as the Faces’ “Ooh La La” plays on the soundtrack. And I also love the scene in Bottle Rocket when Owen Wilson’s character, Dignan, says, “They’ll never catch me, man, ’cause I’m fuckin’ innocent.” Then he runs off to save one of his partners in crime and gets captured by the police, over “2000 Man” by the Rolling Stones. He — and the music — are proclaiming who he really is: he’s not innocent in the eyes of the law, but he’s truly an innocent. For me, it’s a transcendent moment. And transcendent moments are in short supply these days.”

-Martin Scorsese

Just got the terrible news that Sir Alexander McQueen, my favorite active fashion designer, was found dead in his home this morning. He was only 40. Some reports are saying it was a suicide, because his mother passed away earlier this month and he had trouble coping. But I don't want to think about that...I just want to think about all of the genius and art he had given to the world via his fashion.

And in a way, that really sums it up. I mean, what do you say upon the death of someone you've never met, yet you've still always felt so close to, so incredibly connected to? I suppose his message is in his fashion: Stand out. Don't worry about what everyone else is doing. You're here, and you're only here for a limited amount of time, so you have to do everything as though you meant it. Make it count. And that's what he did. Rest in peace, Lee Alexander McQueen.
