So let's get some activity going here.
If someone was interested in Louisiana music, all genre's, what are some "must have" albums they should have in their music collection?
My admittedly small collection consists of, in no particular order:
Doctors, Professors, Kings & Queens, The Big Ol' Box of New Orleans
The Rough Guide To Cajun and Zydeco
The Rough Guide to Cajun Dance
The Rough Guide to Zydeco
Alligator Stomp Cajun and Zydeco Classics, Vol. I and II (I know there's other volumes in the collection.)
Flashback Cajun and Zydeco Classics
Putumayo (World Music) Presents New Orleans
The Very Best of Fats Domino, 1963-1965
Blues Kingpins Fats Domino
Dr. John, N'Awlinz Dis Dat or D'udda
Dr. John The Best of the Parlophone Years
Jazz Moods, Hot: The Dirty Dozen Brass Band
RCA Victor Greatest Hits Series, including "Dixieland", "Louis Armstrong", "Jelly Roll Morton", and "Fats Waller". (I believe they're all from the region...)
So, what else should I have?

Thought I'd see if I could perk things up here with a notice that there is an IMAX film being premiered on August 29th in New Orleans. It features Tab Benoit, the Cajun Bluesman, who's been working on Voice of the Wetlands for some time now.
Here is the link to his website.

Please copy and REPOST EVERYWHERE...
Frigg A-Go-Go is one of several bands that have been selected to compete for a spot on the soundtrack of the the upcoming Samual L. Jackson movie, Snakes On A Plane!!!
We've submitted four songs to TagWorld, and they have chosen "Muscle" as the one to compete with.
We really would like your support with this contest. This might be what puts us over the top. PLEASE take a minute to vote for us. If we win, that means you'll get to see more of us, and that's what all of us want.
We sincerely appreciate your help. Thank-you!
The Specifics: Please vote for us at http://www.tagworld.com/snakesonaplane/sop/soptracks.aspx
In the song submissions section click on genre and select punk. You should see us right there. You do have to sign up to vote (if you aren't already a member). I know that signing up for things is often not fun, but sign up is easy and they don't send junk mail.

I'm X posting this a few places. Artists Unite To Help New Orleans a project formed by Alicia that growing more and more... artists and musicians from all over are contributing work and bands to raise money, etc etc They are still looking for more artist, bands ect to donate time or services. They are especially in need of a accountant, they have to send résumé... they CAN accept college students, as long as they already have a bachelors, or degree of sorts. They also need someone to make a website as well as servers. It should be a fairly large event,so you would get some pretty decent publicity for donating your time and services. If you'd like to help out contact Alicia Angel1181101@aol.com and also more info can be found at the myspace group http://groups.myspace.com/ArtistsUniteToHelpNewOrleans or the Artists Unite To Help New Orleans LIVE JOURNAL

holla community. i'm from new york and i've never really visited the south before, besides disney world, but that doesnt count. anyway, i recently visited new orleans and i totally fell in love! one thing i loved about the city was the self-made music that was just, everywhere. so, i bought i zydeco/cajun best-of mix cd at the flea market, and it really reminded me of my good times in louisiana... anyway, i wanna get more into the music, which is why i joined the community.. :)
so what's swamp pop? it has an enticing name, ha... what are some good bands/musicians that fall under this genre that i could try?
thanks!

If you're in the Baton Rouge area (particularly on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night), check out Key Bangers Dueling Piano Bar! It is brand new and is located in the same building as The Funny Bone Comedy Club, on Bennington Ave., right off College Dr.
It is a laugh-riot, and everyone is sure to have a blast, but don't take my word for it . . . check out the website for more info (click the image):

See y'all there!

Looks like no one has posted here in awhile. I just finished reading Jelly's Blues, about Jelly Roll Morton, and thought it was a great book. A little sad, but good. I was wondering if anyone else has read it?

Every year the National Recording Registry chooses to preserve a few sound recordings deemed to be "culturally, historically or aesthetically important, and/or inform or reflect life in the United States."
They just announced this year's list of recordings, and there are a couple Louisiana recordings on the list:
- Amede Ardoin and Dennis McGee. Cajun-Creole Columbia releases. (1929)
- Leadbelly "Goodnight Irene" (1933)
- Jelly Roll Morton. Interviews conducted by Alan Lomax. (1938)
- Huey P. Long. "Every Man a King" speech. (1935) - Not a music recording, but I couldn't resist listing it! ;)

My favorite cajun performer, and the one who really introduced me to cajun music, is Doug Kershaw. I have several of his albums on vinyl, including the amazing Alive and Pickin'. I have not had the pleasure to see him perform live, but Doug is famous for sometimes going through two bows in one song because of his furious playing. The rosin flying off the bow often makes the fiddle seem like it's smoking! I plan on buying Doug's new concert DVD sometime this month.
Windows Media clips Louisiana Man, his biggest hit. Jambalaya Orange Blossom Special. He can wear out a couple bows during this song!
RealPlayer clips Diggy Diggy Lo Make It Easy on Yourself Midland Two Step
