Hey all the people in LJ land!! Remember me???!!
I missed you guys! I don't have time to do a proper post today as I have tons of laundry and grocery shopping and work etc. but I did want to pop in and say hi! I tried to see if I could catch up on reading all the posts I missed, but I admit it's too overwhelming as there are so many. So if I missed something mega huge or just something I should know so I'm up to date... please let me know!
I have pics and stories to share in the next few days hopefully. We had a blast!!!

*giggles* I love this movie. My favorite parts....
First, it is so sad about the Georgian athlete. So absolutely tragic. I am glad they had a minute of silence for him.
The ceremonies were a combination of good and bad and I think it will all depend on where you are from, how old you are and just your own personal taste as to what you thought about it in general.
I know the biggest complaint I have heard from other Canadian's so far is not that the whole cauldron thing didn't work out as planned (the typical thought on that from us is "oh well... the thing got lit anyway.") rather that the very talented singer butchered our national anthem. You don't 'personalize' the national freaking anthem. How many Canadian's in the audience wanted to sing along but couldn't as you had no idea what tune she was applying to our beloved anthem. Awful.
Another complaint/concern that keeps popping up as I speak to other Canadian's and read message boards etc. is a controversial one. I will try and tread lightly here as I mean no disrespect. Canada is made up of many people and I LOVE that we embrace that where as other countries seem to want everyone who come to live in their country to CONFORM to their ways... to blend in etc. We very much embrace other cultures, beliefs, religions... and I am so very proud of that.
Having said that.... I understand the symbolism and the reason behind the First Nations welcome. I loved their dancing, the costumes (I can hear Peta crying outrage over the use of fur... get over it) but it felt to me that that part of the ceremony really excluded the rest of us. I think they should have done just as they did with the welcoming them maybe after that ceremony they should have representatives from all the provinces or something welcome the world as well. Some comments I have read have gone as far as saying they felt they needed to explain to people that we aren't all aboriginal. I don't feel that way, but I did feel as though they were the only ones representing Canada's welcome in the first half. As the athletes walked in, it would have been nice for other Canadian's to be up there dancing alongside the aboriginal people.
There were definitely moments of awesomeness though. I LOVED the light effects... the whales, the ice etc. That was just too cool. The singing and dancing... awesome. There are some who have said the rhythms of the fall section... the tribute to Atlantic Canada was not good because of the outfits the performers were wearing. My sister thought it was awful and she said the world is going to thing we're a bunch of punk, fiddling tap dancers. LOL I loved it. Ya, they could have gone for traditional, formal wearing garb... but this was so much more fun. And I think that was the point. We are who we are. Anyway, they were awesome.
When they announced we were going to hear a poem, I have to admit I groaned. But he turned out to be really good!! I was happily surprised!
The skiers and snowboarders on wires were cool! I liked the skaters as well. I do wish they would have somehow incorporated hockey into these ceremonies though.
K.D. Lang kicked ass. I know that Justin Timberlake sang Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" for that tribute to Haiti which was fine and all... but K.D. Lang was a million times better. Up there in her white suit... barefoot... singing her heart out. Perfect :)
I didn't care for the Olympic Hymn. Not a big opera fan so that's probably why. It's the Olympic Hymn though so I guess it had to be performed.
I was so glad to see Betty Fox up there marching in the Olympic flag. I am glad they included her in the ceremony. As well as seeing Rick Hansen bringing in the Olympic Flame. Goosebumps. I enjoyed that the four athletes (ok, well three... but there were supposed to be four) lit the Olympic cauldron together.
I think that Gretzky's trip in the back of a truck with fans spontaneously running along side of him as he made his way to light the cauldron outside was the most Canadian moment of all. Again, some are saying it was tacky and 'cheap'.... pffft.... I loved it. I do wonder what other countries think of it though.
As with any ceremony, I wanted all the talking to end. lol I don't care for long speeches. But overall I thought it was wonderful and a great way to introduce the world to our country.
The poem read last night was by Shane Koyczan and is called We Are More....

Why the hell did they pick Arnold Shwarzenegger to run with the torch? I don't care what kind of relationship he has with B.C.... and no offense to American's... but this is OUR moment in the spotlight. I think we should all get together and tackle him as he runs by and run his bit ourselves. Since I'm from Manitoba though someone else will have to do it. Good luck with that. LOL
I am still curious as to who will run last. I really thought it would be Terry Fox's mom. I think that would have been perfect. Then they said it was going to be Gretzky but I just read that it wouldn't be. Although they may just be saying that to keep it a surprise. I thought maybe it would be Michael J Fox but I don't know with his condition if he could even carry it. Rick Hansen would have been another good choice, but he's already ran. Well not ran... but you know what I mean.
Who do you think it will be?
I posted that really not so great but catchy and quite informative song a while back, "Oh Canada". They came out with a video now that is also pretty bad lol. But I'm going to post it anyway seeing as this is a big day for Canadian's and it's the only song I really know of that is filled with Canadian pride. Other than our anthem of course. I think only us Canadian's will 'get' the first and last part of this video.
Canadian's rock!!!
