Hi, gang! Please excuse the cross-posting. I wanted to alert you to an auction taking place today to benefit a fandom member, BERJAYAtruelovepooh, who is an uninsured cancer patient.

Stop by the BERJAYAsupportstacie homemade auction Here!

The auction is open until 6:00pm CST (-6 GMT) tomorrow. You have to register for the board in order to bid, but it's a pretty easy process. There is no minimum bid requirement for the auction items (with the exception of the Angel ornaments, which are being sold for a set price). The FAQ thread is Here if you have any questions.

There is also a discussion forum up where you can start your own threads for fandom or RL talk.

Please spread the word!

Thank you! And again, please excuse the off-topic, cross-posting!

Future of this group

Greetings, all!

I'm home for a little while before I have to fly out again on business, and I wanted to stop in and check on this group.

BERJAYAlaurenc21 and I have felt terrible about being unable to lead the post-DH discussions the way we had always intended.  Unfortunately, the book came out days before Lauren had to return to teaching (not to mention her hockey & hubby obligations!) and I'm smack dab in the middle of my busiest season as a concert & festival promoter.  It's almost enough to make us wish the book had come out in the winter!  Or, better yet, back in April. ;-)

Anyway, the point is that we'd like to turn the reins of this group over to someone( or someones) else at this point.  BERJAYAdolphinluv2783,  you've been instrumental in keeping the discussions here active and interesting.   So whether you're interested, or others are interested as well, we wanted to put the offer out there.  Let us know what you think.

Cheers!

What is the history of the symbol of the Deathly Hallows?

I'm asking for a pretty specific reason. I am a graduate student at the Medieval Institute in Kalamazoo, MI. There are a sizable number of HP fans among us in the department. :) A week or two ago, one of them pointed out something to the rest of us ...

Cut for spoilery contentCollapse )

just finished it -- reaction

impressed

current mood: impressed
current location: office
current song: none

Well, after fits and starts of reading it and having to go be a Mom and do other things, I finally finished it about 20 minutes ago. My reaction?

Oh.

My.

Goodness!

I have never, in my life, been so emotionally touched by a work of fiction. I was ready to discount it as a piece of bad fanfiction, given all the tidbits I was given.

But then -- seeing them all in context and woven together -- fantastic. Absolutely FANTASTIC.

And let me just say a huge and tremendous THANK YOU ALL to the ones who cared enough about me to 'spoil' it. When each of the deaths happened, there was not that sense of jolting shock that will drive me RIGHT out of a book. Knowing it happened, and seeing it in context --- it was fantastic. I was able to brace myself, see it happen, and move on.

Thank you.

That being said -- I had to stop reading right after the death of Voldemort. I literally had to close the book, get up, and MOVE. Otherwise, I was going to laugh, cry, cheer, whoop -- and generally wake the entire house. That was bloody AWESOME battle writing. I pride myself on being able to write a good battle scene -- after reading that, I realise I don't know the first damn thing about it. THAT, my friends, was a BATTLE!!!!

I felt Rowling's writing deteriorated in the latter half of book five and into book six. I was expecting the downward slide to continue.

What I GOT, instead, was a book that sucked me in after the first page and did not let up. Did not let go. Kept me mesmerised. Kept the pages turning and I literally had tears burning in my eyes and a "That's IT?" after I turned the last page. I did not want it to end.

Everything made sense after the book ended. Everything that had frustrated me was explained, everything that bothered me about the previous two books was suddenly made clear and woven into this tapestry that was just -- I'm speechless.

I'm just flat-out floored.

And incredibly, INCREDIBLY impressed.

BERJAYAgioiamia gave me the go ahead, so here we go: chapter by chapter discussion of Deathly Hallows. I'm just going to post an overview of the chapter, and then we can discuss it in the comments. Write about what you liked, what you didn't like, questions the chapter answered for you, etc. I guess the same rules as for the community apply: be nice, everyone's opinion counts, so on and so forth. I'm going to keep these under cuts, since there are probably still some people who haven't read the book yet.
