looking for the new in "new year" ... something really really new ... vanity fair recently ran an article illustrating how music, fashion, design has been in kind of a standstill since the 90s ... what a wake-up call ... I concur.

march is flying by...

march is flying by...and my cap lock key is working only sporadically. this seriously hampers my work, which i would put in all caps, except i can't. So it looks like today will be a venture out to a computer store for another laptop. ideas/ suggestions/ apparently, the question mark key also is not working.

last night was sad. the news about David montgomery made me feel like i couldn't breathe and i didn't even know him and kim that well. i've lost friends and projects and businesses over my priority for my children, so on that level, i can understand how people feel angry about David and kim's choices. At the same time, i cannot understand or possibly imagine the overwhelming, indescribeable pain and despair an individual must feel to even put themselves in the position to make that choice. my heart goes out to them and their families. When my son was 4, the death of 2 grandparents, the departure of a best friend in daycare, and the birth of my 2nd son, all in the span of 3 months, changed him from a giddy always smiling, singing child, to being introspective and morose (at my bedside in the hospital, he asked me, "Why did you want a 'new boy'?"). I had to work so hard for so many years to get him through those feelings. yes, when you take on that parental role, it's "not about me" any more, but there certainly are an overwhelming number of things that try to get in the way of that-constantly.

It's a new day. There's work to be done, computers to be bought. Bring some joy to your heart. Love the one you're with. Expect the unexpected and accept the kindness of strangers.

happy new year to all!

p.s., went to a Wassail Ball last night, long drapy indigo evening gown, long gloves, over the top hair and makeup ... got all kinds of giddy dancing until 2 a.m. with tuxedo crowd and sipping what seemed like bottomless bottles of champagne ... fun date with a cute boy-man that likes to treat me well and nurture the inner child in both of us :)

that token end of year post...

First, merry everything to everyone out there. This holiday season has been crazy. Holiday parties in overdrive. Last night attended two in a row after 3 this past week. One more tonight and another on Sunday, then I'll be ready to chill.

It's been a strange past 18 months with lots of highs and lows. 18 months ago I was an identify theft victim not once, but twice. The first took out all kinds of credit cards in my name and even a mortgage. A ballsy lot that engages in this. The second blew me away...they filed a death certificate in my name in order to get my social security $. I found out about both very accidentally, so everyone, please be cautious about your records and diligently check what you have, even if they are accounts you think you have stashed away carefully with no interaction for years! I've been working with an "identity restoration specialist" who without I would be royally screwed.

I'd like to think there was no malice in these occurrences and instead chalk it up to random, general criminal activity. But my skepticism will always be there...

On the plus side, I've restored nearly all my publishing and marketing clients that I'd lost back in 2006, and I've taken on some new ones as well. It's required some hellacious 15-18 hour workdays on a regular basis, particularly for 2 new clients in Hong Kong and Tokyo, who expect responsiveness despite the time difference. I welcome it...it feels great to be wholly engaged again. I know I err on the side of workaholicism, but my kids are pre-adults now so guilt is down to the minimum. I do miss my friends and maybe my priorities are outa whack in that regard, but those closest to me know we will always pick up instantly whether we are years, months or miles apart.

2011 is shaping up to be splendid and I am already booked through April. I'm breathing lots of sighs of relief.

So, my lj friends, this holiday, love the ones you're with, those around you and those who love you back no matter what.

Cheers!
~G

WWOD?

I back into a car in a parking lot. Swear it wasn't there when I checked all mirrors and looked around left and right. Called 911 to get the cop there. Called my insurance company to get a claim number. Wrote down my insurance info for other driver (she refused to take it or talk to me). Took photos of the damage (right crumpled bumper). My car, no damage. Cop comes and says he almost cried when he saw her pretty new red camaro smooshed on the right bumper. Then he looked at my sad suv and said, "not that your's isn't..." and I answered "red and sporty." He laughed. He took our information. Told her to take my insurance info that I'd written down for her. Checked to make sure her car drove okay and no wheel damage. Sends her on her way. Goes to his cruiser for a really long time and I'm thinking, "fuck, why is it taking so long?" Then he rolls down his passenger window, motions for me to lean in, and says, "I'm not going to give you a ticket, after all, you've got your deductible as it is," gave me a copy of the police report and shook my hand. So fucking cool. Anyway he looked uncannily like Roy (dj Omac), hence the WWOD? and I'm just happy his lookalike didn't give me a ticket. Jumps for joy. Peace outahere. EDIT: No deductible either! I lucked out... :)

significance of 11-11

...so I guess once you strip away our skin and bone and ambition, we're really just binary underneath it all and 11:11 reconfigures our cellular memory...say what? Then what's it mean when I see 10:10 all the time?????????????????????????????????//
