This is a community for posting pictures of things inspired by the golden section, or created to its proportion. It is also for any discussion or news related to the topic. Anyone can join, anyone can post. Introductions are ok, as long as you don't just say "hi my name is.." ..cause thats a tad boring. What is The Golden Section? Mathematically, it is a line segment divided into two parts. Point C is positioned such that the ratio of the short half to the long half is equal to the ratio of the long half to the whole. (1.618)
Symbolically:
A-----C---B where CB / AB = AC / AB, or AB^2 = BC x AC
To some, this is the equation of beauty itself. The Golden Section has been used for thousands of years in art (The Last Supper, the Mona Lisa) and architecture (Notre Dame, Pyramid of Giza)...and in nature (the nautilus shell and the human body). It is the single greatest representation of the unity of science and the mystical, and is proof these two things are not incompatible as many people think this day in age. Although forgotten by many, this inherent partnership has been known to great thinkers, artists, philosphers, and scientists for hundreds and hundreds of years.
Credit is given to Pythagoras for the discovery of the ratio.
Remember PHI is not PI!! Don't confuse the two just because of that movie, they are ENTIRELY different ratios. Thanks. Even though this is a mathematical concept, this community is also or even moreso focused on the appearance of the golden ratio in nature, art, music, history, philosophy etc, i.e., appreciating its beauty.
"Geometry has two great treasures: one is the theorem of Pythagoras; the other, the division of a line into extreme and mean ratio. The first we may compare to a measure of gold; the second we may name a precious jewel." -Kepler
"... just like God cannot be properly defined, nor can be understood through words, likewise this proportion of ours cannot ever be designated through intelligible numbers, nor can it be expressed through any rational quantity, but always remains occult and secret, and is called irrational by the mathematicians." -Pacioli
