Skywalker Sound's Director of Sound - Randy Thom explains why filmmakers often ignore the laws of physics, and why that’s the right choice.

We don’t watch films for reality.
We watch them for story.

This was one of my favourite moments from our conversation.

Jim Bloom, a producer on The Empire Strikes Back a Jim Bloom, a producer on The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, shares a small but unforgettable moment with Leonard Nimoy.

In this short anecdote, Bloom recalls a playful exchange over a walkie-talkie and Nimoy’s perfectly judged, wordless response. A raised eyebrow and a look that instantly recalled Spock. It is a lovely reminder of how different corners of film and television history often intersect in unexpected and very human ways.

Ex ILMer, Jett Green talks about how she learned m Ex ILMer, Jett Green talks about how she learned matte painting by working in the moment, trusting intuition, and making decisions as the image developed.

In this clip, Green reflects on the uncertainty that comes at the start of every painting, the importance of listening to that internal “antenna,” and why the process can’t easily be reduced to rules or formulas. It’s a thoughtful look at how confidence and clarity emerge through doing, rather than planning everything in advance.

Michael Pangrazio explains why convincing matte pa Michael Pangrazio explains why convincing matte paintings don’t rely on detail everywhere in the frame.

In this clip, Pangrazio talks about focus, diminishing detail, and how the audience’s eye and brain process an image in just a few seconds. He explains why overworking an image can make it feel stiff or smaller, and how restraint and softness help sell scale and believability on screen.

Phil Tippett reflects on animating for The Empire Phil Tippett reflects on animating for The Empire Strikes Back and the self-doubt he felt at the time, despite already being a key part of Industrial Light & Magic.

In this clip, Tippett talks about feeling that his talent hadn’t yet grown into the level of skill the film demanded. Practising in secret whenever he could, the slow, repetitive process of learning stop-motion animation paid off. It’s a rare, honest insight into the reality behind one of the most iconic sequences in cinema history. Phil didn't become a genius over night. It was a learned, practiced crafted, skill.

This conversation is taken from Episode 100 of The Filmumentaries Podcast, recorded in 2024.
They made a graphic novel about the making of Star They made a graphic novel about the making of Star Wars… and ended up being invited to Skywalker Ranch. Then found out George Lucas himself had seen it.

This was such a great moment from my chat with Lucas Wars creators Laurent Hopman and Renaud Roche. These two didn’t just retell the story, they earned the respect of the people who actually lived it.

And honestly, that’s when you know you’ve done something right.

Full episode out now on The Filmumentaries Podcast.
If you’re currently stuck on what to buy the film If you’re currently stuck on what to buy the film nerd who already owns everything… this might genuinely be the answer.

In this clip, Lucas Wars artist Renaud Roche explains why they chose the Twin Suns for the cover and what it symbolises for George Lucas at the moment where Star Wars could’ve collapsed completely.

It’s about doubt, destiny, and standing on the edge of something massive.

Honestly, it’s a perfect Christmas gift for the Star Wars fan in your life.
