A Shirt58, yesterday "The superfluous, that very necessary thing..." - Voltaire

Hi, I'm Peter aka Shirt58. My username comes from the field hockey shirt I was allocated some while ago. Yes, men do play field hockey. And Tasmania is not a fictional place.

BERJAYA
This is not the Australia men's national field hockey team at the 2004 Summer Olympics.

The Australia men's national field hockey team has a long tradition of being the the best in the world and then somehow managing not to win the Olympic gold medal, with one exception.

I have very strong opinions about almost everything. My views are unconventional, iconoclastic and coruscatingly pragmatic. You will find nothing of the sort in my contributions to the Wikipedia project.

BERJAYA This user page has been vandalized , apparently, but I am far too scatter-brained to have even noticed, let alone count how many times.

Brief Q&A

[edit]

Q: Shirt58, are you as easy-going, helpful, ridiculously erudite, and concise in real life as you appear to be from your contributions?
A: Yes, that is correct.

My editing philosophy

[edit]
  • Be concise and use good references.
BERJAYAThis user has written or expanded 14 articles featured in the Did You Know section on the Main Page.
  • I've recently tried to bump up my contributions to at least 50% article-space edits. As of 27 February 2014 my "edit count pie" looked like this. As of 1 November 2014 my "edit count pie" looked like... erm, a SVG image with XML markup I couldn't even begin to understand, but it's 53.3%.

Melbourne

[edit]
  • So Pete, where in Australia are you from?
  • I'm from Melbourne.
  • Melbourne? Where's that?
  • (sighs) It's about 800 kilometres south-west of Sydney
  • Oh, Sydney. Yeah, I know where Sydney is.

I'm not "technical" - what do I mean by that?

Quick (non-AI) summary: don't.

From Supreme Court of Victoria website:
Generative AI and Large Language Models create output that is not the product of reasoning. Nor are they a legal research tool. They use probability to predict a given sequence of words.

OK, obviously the whole Wikipedia:Wiki Workers United solidarity thing. I'm still thinking about this. I've been a union member all of my adult life, sometimes inadvertently a member of two unions at once (have I mentioned how absent-minded I am, lately?) I'm currently a member of a union that has as its predecessor one of those unions that sided with the DLP in 1955. That union I chose to not specifically not mention is, in my opinion, a clown car for various sinecures... but in solidarity...

New computer

[edit]

Maybe back in 2015 or so, my then Compaq computer bought in 2008 sent me messages its "build" or "OS" or something like that wasn't supported any more, so I got in my car and stopped at the first electronics and homewares shop I came across, and bought the second-cheapest desktop they had on offer. Go forward to 2025, and that desktop sent me messages that its "build" or "OS" or something like that wasn't supported any more. Saturday 4 Jul 2026 I knocked my 2015 computer off my desk and its "on button" doesn't work anymore. So so I got in my car and stopped at the first electronics and homewares shop I came across and bought the second-cheapest laptop. And so here we are.
