*flops, freshly awoken, across his blog*
Oh, I promised an update like almost a week ago? Time really gets away from you, doesn't it?
--- --- ---
We'll start with a recap on the recent art progress:
Here's the last two posts about SK art, demonstrating my progress designing Faruk, the barista.
Post 1Post 2--- --- ---
Now the writing.
The initial draft of SK was completed some time ago. I think I announced that already?
Now I've been working my way through the second draft.
In the first draft, the story got split up into 10 main sections.
In the second draft, I expanded the first section into around 7 scenes, and am now several scenes deep into section 2.
Section 2 looks like it's going to result in more scenes than section 1.
I'm having to add scenes into draft 2 that I hadn't written into the draft 1 summary. It's possible I'll need to do a THIRD draft that's only partial, just expanding on/cleaning up scenes and plot that gets added in this draft.
What's that, don't mix drafting phases and editing phases? Babe I'm not sure I'm
capable of turning off Editing Brain.
But things are progressing... actually remarkably fast.
It's so strange to me looking back and realizing how fresh this idea is, and it's coming together so fully and in extensive planned detail.
In addition to getting into section 2 in the summary, I've started thumbnailing and scripting for section 1.
I officially have One Scene's worth of script, of two characters talking, and I have some starting plans for the composition for the first page of the comic.
If I stagger the work like this, starting the drawing for section 1 as I force my way through expanding section 2...
I can possibly get started on actually drawing the first comic within a couple months.
My hope with the pages are trying to get 1+ pages completed a week, and once I get a comfortable buffer, posting 1 page a week.
If I succeed in drawing more than one page a week and the buffer starts getting expansive (a hope, but I make no promises), than I may sometimes post double updates. That is, more than one page in a single update.
Judging from the size I'm already working with, this comic is a multi-year project. It's going to take years to complete all the pages.
I always get too damn ambitious for my own good with art projects. :p
--- --- ---
So there's the state of things for now.
My next plans:
Obviously, more writing.
I'm planning to start doing some kind of visual art at least twice a week, on a schedule, instead of just whenever I feel like it.
With the help of my adhd meds I'm really hoping I can get a bit more structure into my workweek and smooth out my progress some.
Ideally the visual art days will always include at least some designwork for SK, but sometimes I just might not be able to focus and just do some doodling or sign painting.
I was planning to try to cut down my Minecraft hours a
little to squeeze in more work time. I think with my meds I don't need to mainline dopamine quite as hard to keep my brain at baseline operating function.
Buuuuut...
One of my friends is inviting me to a
third server and, given the context (not shared here), I'll be accepting.
So my less MC time on my first servers is just going straight into MC time on server #3. :p
Friend D is suffering from summertime heat problems and will have less energy for our Friday games though, so I expect to make up a little time there.
I currently have up to 4 days a week scheduled for social time. And it's broken up in a pattern which means dropping any one of the days does mean missing out on specific sorts of gaming or people.
Friend K, D, and L on Tuesdays for board games, Path of Exile, or Subnautica 2.
Friend K and D on Saturdays for Minecraft, Stardew Valley, or other things.
Friend D on Fridays for Minecraft, Vintage Story, art hangouts, or whatever.
There's things I do with D that K isn't interested in, so I miss out dropping Friday. I would miss out on Stardew dropping Saturday. I would miss out on L dropping Tuesday...
And on
Wednesday it's Family Minecraft Time so that's an
entirely different group, so whuf.
So fucking busy.
But yeah, with the heat brutalizing friend D, and their poor laptop, Friday hangouts will become sparser for a few months, so I'll use the gaps to try to get more done and/or relax and recover from the work and socializing.
In the meeeeeeantime, I have another project waiting in the wings!
This one isn't one I have to push aside like the others to keep SK in the forefront.
This is an idea for something more OGLAF style (in structure). That is, lots of smaller stories bundled together under one title. This gives me a place to throw together misc short stories that fit certain criteria. It avoids getting in the way of SK by virtue of being little miniprojects I can do when I need a short break from working on SK, but don't want to get distracted with something big. Make a little 1-4 page story or so, post it, get back to my "proper" work.
And what sort of criteria would this title ask for? Well, the working name right now is "Edgetastica", and I first thought of it while rereading THIS comic (1):
Nana's Everyday LifeI remembered how much I can LOVE edgy humor when it isn't being racist, queerphobic, or otherwise bigoted. Just the pained laughter of something horrible presented comedically.
So that's what this comic will be. Call it jokes that would get you canceled on Tumblr.
I already have 5 "storylines" for the comic. That is, repeating gags involving the same themes or characters. Again, OGLAF style.
I'll work on that on no particular schedule, just whenever I feel like it in between grinding away at SK writing.
(1) Warnings for:
Violence, death, sexual jokes involving a minor, and more!
I guess I'll wrap up this post here.
More updates coming in the future as I work!
Oh right and I'll try to get the official SK information post updated later. Today? I dunno. We'll see what happens.
Anyway, off to breakfast for me.
