Joy Division Film Screens at Cannes

Control, the new film about the life of Ian Curtis, will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17th. Celebrities in attendance will reportedly include members of New Order, Depeche Mode, and Bono. The film is the feature-length directorial debut of noted photographer Anton Corbijn. Joy Division vocalist Ian Curtis commited suicide in 1980 at the age of 23. The role of Ian Curtis will be taken on by little-known 27 year old English actor Sam Riley, who most notably played Mark E. Smith in the film 24 Hour Party People. Meanwhile Samantha Morton (Minority Report, Jesus' Son) will play Curtis' wife. The film will open in various European countries this September. A U.S. release date has not been confirmed.

Sebadoh's First Album Expanded, Reissued

Sebadoh fans have yet another super-sized album coming down the reissue pipes.

Domino Records will dip into the trio's deep past to release The Freed Man. The album, which was originally released in 1989 by Homestead Records, has never made it to CD before. Domino's trumped-up edition crams 52 tracks onto the effort, debuting many previously unavailable tracks. It arrives in stores July 10.

Last summer, Domino Records gave Sebadoh's III, as a deluxe, two-disc version.

Meat Puppets Plot Comeback

Founding Puppets Curt and Cris Kirkwood hooked up with new drummer Ted Marcus to re-launch the alt-rock staples. The band's comeback effort, Rise to Your Knees is scheduled for a July 17 release from Kansas City's Anodyne Records. No cover art or track listing has been revealed.

Bassist Cris isn't just enjoying life back making music -- he's enjoying life as a free man. He was sentenced to two years behind bars in 2004 for assaulting a security officer outside a post office.
