I'm currently delighting in all the great DH discussion that's going on all over livejournal, and I'm especially pleased at how great everyone is handling it. Maybe it's just my friendly corner of fandom, but while there have been a few little blow-ups here and there, everyone seems to be mature enough to realize that 1) multiple interpretations is what makes fandom go 'round, and 2) just because something's presented as a big deal in someone's fannish journal doesn't mean it's a huge issue in their real life, so there's no need to make it personal.
It's made me reflect on my own reactions, and how they're often misinterpreted. To wit: I often rip on the Harry Potter series and on JKR's writing mercilessly. Which often makes people say, "Well, I don't see you with a published series," or "If you hate them so much, why do you read them?" But really, I criticize the series because there's so much I like.
I guess it's the amateur editor in me. I get the most caught up in pointing out something's faults when I can see how easily it could be perfect (for me). When I beta read for someone, I'm conscientious about pointing out the things I like about it, but I see criticism of professional fiction as a different creature because the author has already received the validation of publication and remuneration and fan following, and because the author will very likely never read nor care about my thoughts. The very fact that I've devoted so much time and emotion into the HP fandom and purchased the hardbacks hot off the presses (JKR is one of only three current authors who's driven me to buy new hardcovers) should surely speak to my love for the series.
But because "I love you" is something that's better said than left implied, I made up a list of ten things that I love without reservation about Harry Potter.
