Claiming Guidelines and Claims Master List
Here lies the first of several Q&A's!
Do I need to make a claim?
Yes!
Ok, so what can I claim?
You can claim any character, pairing, threesome, four-or-moresome, partnership/duo, family, or team in the DCU. You can claim villains, rogues, or little known or rarely used characters. You can also claim "General DC Universe", or a specific comic, TV, or movie series. You can even claim crossovers between series if you want! Feel free to be as vague or as specific as you like!
Some examples:
Supers Family - this could include, Clark Kent, Lois Lane, Jonathan and Martha Kent, Kara Zor-El, Karen, Kon-El, Chris Kent, Jor-El, Lara, Zor-El, Krypto, Streaky... you get the picture. :p
Justice League - you could pick a specific membership, including members from a certain era only, such as the current line-up or JLI-era line-up, or you could pick "General".
Green Lanterns - this group could include Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, Kilowog, Mogo, and even the Guardians! Heck, go nuts and include members of the Sinestro Corps if you want to, or claim Green Lanters/Sinestro Corps.
Daily Planet - this group could include Clark, Lois, Perry White, Jimmy Olsen, Richard White, Cat Grant, Gil Truman, Steve Lombard, even Lana Lang from the end of Superman III!
The DCAU - here, you could include any of the animated series, or go more specific, choosing "The Batman" or "JLU".
Is there a wait list for claims? Do I have to be approved to post?
Heck no! To both. As soon as you join the community and comment here with your claim, you can start posting. There are no holds on claims, no restrictions. If fifteen people want to write Superman/Batman, who am I to say no?
As soon as I pick up your claim to add to the Claims Master List, I'll give you a tag to use on all your entries. It will consist of your username and a condensed version of your claim. It's perfectly fine to start posting before you get your tag. I'll go back and tag anything that's missed.
Can I make more than one claim at once?
Whatever floats your boat! If you feel like completing two or more challenges at once, go for it! If you wind up biting off more than you can chew, just drop a claim. It's that simple.
If I claim two or more characters, do they all have to be in each fic or art piece?
Nope. It's encouraged, especially for pairings, but not absolutely vital. You won't be drawn and quartered if you don't mention all three members of a threesome in the same fic. Team or family pieces can center around any of the members in any combinations.
Can I claim a crossover?
Sure! As long as one or more of your claimed characters is a member of the DCU, it's all gravy. You can claim a DCU series crossover, too. For example, you could claim Smallville/DC comics, or Superman Returns/Batman Begins.
How about AU's?
No problem!! Some of the most popular stories in the DCU are Elseworlds stories, after all!
RPF? Original characters?
Most folks might say no, but I say why not? As long as one or more of your claimed characters is a member of the DCU, go for it! You've got that plot bunny biting your ankles to have Bruce Wayne and Christian Bale swap places for a day? Bring it on!! Have a burning desire to introduce a love interest for Jimmy Olsen? Write it! Just be specific in your claim, so I can give you an appropriate tag.
Are there any limits to genres or ratings?
Nope! All genres are welcome, from gen, to fluffy bunny, to filthy smut, to deathfic, to crackfic. Het, slash, and femslash are all welcome. Ratings up to NC-17 are welcome. Just be sure to list appropriate warnings and ratings in your headers when you post, and post any NC-17 material behind an LJ-cut.
What if I can't finish my challenge or need to drop a claim?
No problem! Just be courteous and drop the claim in the Dropped Claims post so I can take you off the Claims Master List.
In general, I am not the claims police! If it works for you, claim it and write it or make art for it. If you can't finish, don't sweat it.
