We have finally reached the end of a long, long, very long, exceedingly long, like "The Iliad" long awards season. The only surprise this year was that I should not have been surprised at the turns the Oscars took because every year there are frontrunners out the gates, who fall to the waistside and while some stay there (like Delroy Lindo, sadly), the other regain their lead (Frances McDormand who was losing ground to Carey Mulligan.
How did the 93rd Annual Academy Awards shake out?
Best Actor in a Leading Role Anthony Hopkins, The Father

*Sir Anthony's win was a shock to many who were sure Chadwick Boseman would win, but, while has won many critics circle awards, he wasn't a lock because he didn't win the awards that generally line up with Oscars. He lost the Spirit to Riz Ahmed and the BAFTA to Sir Anthony.
Someone else who was really shocked by this lost was Oscar's producer/director Steven Soderbergh who rearranged categories and instead of ending with Best Picture like what is traditionally the case, he ended with Best Actor thinking Boseman would win and we'd have a big emotional finish.
Soderbergh right about now

Best Actress in a Leading Role Frances McDormand, Nomadland
Best Actress in a Supporting Role Yuh-Jung Youn, Minari

Best Actor in a Supporting Role Daniel Kaluuya, Judas and the Black Messiah

Best Director Chloé Zhao, Nomadland

Best Picture Nomadland
Best International Feature Film Denmark, Another Round

Best Adapted Screenplay The Father (Christopher Hampton & Florian Zeller)
Best Original Screenplay Promising Young Woman (Emerald Fennell)
Best Production Design Mank
Best Film Editing Sound of Metal
Best Visual Effects Tenet

*I'm actually surprised by Tenet's win because Christopher Nolan was pilloried for daring to want to release his film during a pandemic. He was fighting for exhibitors, but people were too wrapped up in their anger to see that. People lambasted him and deemed him egocentric for wanting his film to be seen in the arena it was made for, but then those same people were cheering on the directors of the WB films who were upset to find out that WB will be releasing their films on HBO Max.
Best Costume Design Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Best Makeup and Hairstyling Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom winners. Mia Neal, Jamika Wilson, and Sergio Lopez-Rivera

Best Live-Action Short Film Two Distant Strangers

*Winners Travon Free and Martin Desmond Roe wore the names of victims of police shootings in their jacket and shoes. Free also used his speech to call out violence by police.

Best Documentary Feature My Octopus Teacher
Best Original Score Soul *Has Trent gotten ::ahem:: "refreshed"?

Best Sound Sound of Metal
Best Cinematography Mank *SHOCKER! I wonder if it's a branch vote because NOMADLAND has been winning this category all season.
Best Original Song “Fight For You" from JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH

Best Documentary Short Subject Colette

Best Animated Short Film If Anything Happens I Love You

Best Animated Feature Film Soul
The most important thing, however, remains the fashion!

So you made it through 2020.

I really hope you did - by hook or by crook.
2020 was a beast. So many lost their jobs or were furloughed or had their wages cut, some have lost loved ones whether through Covid-19 or not (I know I have lost loved ones in 2020 and will carry them with me through 2021 and beyond).
If you had a great 2020, I hope 2021 is even better. If your 2020 was awful, just terrible, like this wig terrible -

Then I hope 2021 is infinitely better.
Some things weren't so bad, though, right? SUPERNATURAL finally ended eons after Fatty Fat Fat Fat Jensen A(rbu)ckles said SMALLVILLE went on too long. And keeping in line with SPN fandom, the penultimate episode and finale wank was glorious!

But, back to what I am here for.

Everyone says be kind, and I don't have to tell any of my mutuals that because from all my time on LJ I know you lot are the kindest and most supportive and giving people. But extend that kindness to yourself. Do something silly. Do something that fortifies your soul even if it's creating a dummy Twitter account to do battle with Deplorables.....not that that's what *I* did.
Anyhoo! Love to all! Stay safe out there!

Livejournal is 21! It's crazy how we all joined LJ when we were five-years old.
I am rarely here but I still love this place and the people I've met here. And just as important I am still friends with the person who pulled me kicking and screaming from Yahoo Groups to LJ.
Are we having fun yet? More importantly are we all alive still? Healthy? Or as my grandmother used to say, “Still kicking but not too high”?

It's still somewhat early days of people having to self-isolate due to the Coronavirus and nerves are being frayed and boredom is setting in and idle hands are the devil's workshop and the devil's workshop is Twitter.
I wake up to Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman, Fast & The Furious) and I think, "Finally! A teaser trailer for "Death on the Nile" ( the Agatha Christie adaptation directed by Sir Kenneth Branagh starring Gadot, Armie Hammer, Leticia Wright, Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Annette Bening and Branagh), no such luck. Instead it was people criticizing Gal for posting a video of herself and fellow celebrities singing John Lennon's "Imagine".
It's one thing if someone doesn't like Gadot. There are people who hate her because she was an Israeli soldier; or some who feel that they are lauding John Lennon who had a dodgy history with women and an underage girl. Or like Bono who was criticized for posting a video of a Coronavirus song he wrote, because he is part owner of a hotel and he and the other owners are not helping their temporarily laid off staff. Those criticism is understandable. But to criticize Gal for trying to uplift, when people feel she should be donating money instead is daft. One, for all anyone knows she has donated money. Two, if she had done a public declaration that she was donating money, I guarantee you there would have been people complaining that she should have done so without proclaiming it. You can't win for losing.
I just want consistency. For days now people have been lauding Debbie Allen for conducting dance classes online, Diplo, Keith Urban, John Legend, Swing Out Sister and Pink for livestreaming their performances while stuck at home, and Josh Gad has announced he would be doing live children book readings online but for some reason Gal putting together a sing-along just really made people's head explode.
It's really weird that people have such a hate on for celebrity, when people are stuck at home binge-watching content brought to them by the creative community.
Mad. Hope everyone is well and avoiding The 'rona! |

I happened to go to the grocery store last night just to pick up something for dinner and all the carts and handbaskets were gone, long lines as if it were Comic Con. With the Oscars given out, it is now offically the end of awards season. Don't worry, we'll be back there in no time flat as Sundance has already happened which will usher in the other film fests which will give us potential award nominees and we'll do this dance once again.
I was pretty sure I had all the awards figured out but I was shocked by the dominance of PARASITE. Loved the film, it was definitely my pic for Best Picture but I was sure 1917 would win the technical awards and Sam Mendes Best Director.
Who were the winners of the ( 92nd Academy Awards?Collapse )
It's a good thing that there were Oscar winners because to me there weren't very many fashion winners. Like. At all.

We are beginning to see the end on the horizon. Last night was the Critics Choice Awards, the BAFTAs, the Spirit Awards and the SAG Awards are nigh, and we know have the nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards. Once again, this year will be a host-less event.
If you've been following the various critics awards these nominees aren't very surprising. To me the big shock is Costume Design categories. Ruth E. Carter (Dolemite is My Name), Julian Day (Rocketman) and Judy Temimme (Judy) were all not nominated despite each of them winning in various circles.
Others are decrying that this year is once again an Oscar So White redux as Lupita Nyong'o (Us), Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers), Awkwafina (The Farewell) and director Lulu Wang (The Farewell) were not put up; and like the BAFTAs there were no female directors nominated despite the work of Wang, Greta Gerwig (Little Women) and Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers).
I didn't feel Hustlers, Jennifer Lopez and Lupita Nyong'o or Us would be nominated beyond the critics circles. I loved "Rocketman" - I saw it four times in the theaters but I knew Taron Egerton wouldn't be nominated for an Oscar. Now, "Just Mercy" on the other hand was robbed!
Other surprise perceived snubs were The Safdie Bros. film "Uncut Gems" and its lead Adam Sandler who people swore would get a nomination.

The Golden Globes Ambassadors his year were two of Pierce Brosnan sons, Paris and Dylan who didn't know what they were doing. It's like they fcuked off rehearsals.

The Globes are earlier than normal so it feels like this is the beginning of the end of awards season but it we still have The Critics Choice, The Spirit Awards, SAG-AFTRA Awards, The BAFTAs and the Oscars, with the NAACP awards being relegated to March for some reason.

Two big fannish blast from the pasts came up recently. First George Morfogen of HBO's “Oz” passed away. Why is this a fannish thing? Because Morfogen starred in the play “Uncle Bob” that Gale Harold was briefly in. Boy, do I remember those days of fans going to NY to see that play and being SHOOKETH over the content. Who would think a play written by Austin Pendelton about and old man would feature a bug chasing and incest plotline.

The other big fannish event was the announcement of the cancellation of “Supernatural” when it hits season 15. For those of you who are a fan of counting SPN went on five years longer than “Smallville” despite Jenny “Fatty” A(rbu)ckles saying he wouldn't want SPN to overstay its welcome like SV did and that was during SV's 7th season. So....math's fun. Pointing out hypocrisy is more fun.

Well, awards season is well and truly over and it is was one for the record books for being one of the most contentious awards season filled with nasty whisper campaigns, revealed misdeeds, missteps by the Academy and a hostless Oscars...which surprisingly worked IMO.
What I loved most about this season is that it zigged when you thought it would zag. In October when “A Star is Born” was released, the film was the front runner, but as months went by it was assured that the film would get Best Song and that's it. Then came “The Favourite” and it seemed like the Oscar was Olivia Colman's to lose, but then Glenn Close began winning film critics awards and with that came the feeling that she would be getting an Oscar as a Lifetime Achievement proxy since she had been nominated 7 times with zero wins. Close winning the Golden Globes in Drama and the SAG Awards made people feel that she had the Oscar on lock; especially since some people felt that Olivia Colman should have been placed in Supporting while her “The Favourite” costars Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone should battle it out in Lead since that was their rightful spot. But alas, despite not campaigning due to her work on “The Crown” (she even missed the Oscar Nominee luncheon), the gold statue went to Colman.
Ethan Hawke was nominated for over 50 critics and indie awards, but shockingly lost out on an Oscar nod. With Hawke out the way and a few wins under his belt it seemed the Oscar was Christian Bale's for his role as Dick Cheney in “Vice”, but I think Bale's over-the-top acceptance speech at the SAG Awards turned voters off ---it was his Howard Dean “Yee-haw!!” moment. Suddenly, Bale lost momentum and Rami Malek jumped to the front. With that jump he began going on the defensive as people began questioning why he would work with Bryan Singer. To head it off, Malek spoke of how difficult a time he had working with Singer and that he didn't know of the allegations surrounding Singer prior to being cast.
Some more conspiracy minded people felt that Bryan Singer was trying to sabotage Malek's and “Bohemian Rhapsody”s chances by posting pictures from the set on his Instagram. People felt he was trying to remind people that it was his film as the cast and producers carefully avoiding mentioning Singer or even Dexter Fletcher who took over the last two weeks of filming after Singer was canned by Fox.
Then there was “Green BooK. WHEW. I salute Mahershala Ali and the film's executive producer Octavia Spencer for being able to weather the sh*t storm that came with the film. There was already criticism from the start that the film was a White Savior trope, a reverse of the Magical Negro. A “Driving Miss Daisy” but backwards. Then Viggo Mortenson who was winning praise for the role dropped the N-word during a SAG-AFTRA panel. He made a public apology (and a public and private one to Ali). Then came the news that the family of Dr. Don Shirley (portrayed by Ali in the film) rebuked the film saying that Dr. Don never wanted a film made about him, that he had refused overtures from Nick Vallelongo (co-writer and son of the man Mortenson plays) about writing the story and the family says Nick's father and Dr. Don weren't really friends. This made even more people condemn the film and put Ali in an awkward position of having to contact the family to apologize. The film's director/producer Peter Farrelly claimed he didn't know Dr. Don had any surviving family as his estate was left to friends. To change the narrative, in the final weeks of their awards push, Farrelly invited Dr. Don's friends to sit on panels and they spoke of their love for the film, how Dr. Don would have loved it and that in reality Dr. Don didn't have a relationship with his family despite their claims.
Looking like “Green Book” was going to snatch an Oscar from the jaws of defeat, it got murkier with old tweets from Vallelongo who retweeted 9/11 anti-Muslim articles. He killed his Twitter account, and apologized to Ali – a Muslim. Then it came out that Peter Farrelly had whipped out his dick in front of Cameron Diaz as a “joke” as she auditioned for “There's Something About Mary”. He apologized and said how much he has grown since then. Then when the film and Ali won at the SAG Awards, Bill Murray poured champagne over Ali, a Muslim man who doesn't drink. Unsurprisingly, Murray didn't apologize.
So with all of the tsuris swirling around “Green Book” people had a lot of feelings when it won “Best Picture” . Like Spike Lee who allegedly tried to leave the Dolby Theatre when the win was announced. He later said backstage that he felt “the ref made a bad call.”
While I didn't think “Green Book” or “Bohemian Rhapsody” was the best of the bunch (most of the films I loved in 2018 wasn't nominated anyway) I can appreciate their wins. I think people have this aspirational view of how these awards should go down but forget that this is a career for people and a lot of things that people got in an uproar over like “Bohemian Rhapsody” not focusing on Freddie Mercury's bisexuality or Malek being a straight man playing a bisexual means they feel that want to narrow roles for actors. Some actors are fine with it like after his win for playing Andrew Cunanen Darren Criss said he will no longer play a gay role, instead leaving it for gay actors. But gay actors like Ben Whishaw feels that actors act and that there is no role they shouldn't be able to do. So it's not surprising that the acting community didn't think, “Maybe we shouldn't vote for this straight man playing a bisexual.” They focused on the acting. And the fact that Rami campaigned his butt off. One voter remarked that she saw him more than she saw her own dog.
Hopefully, next year will be smoother.
Nah, bump that. I want it to be a dumpster fire like this year!!

We are *this* much closer to the end of awards season. Not that much because there’s still the SAG Awards and the BAFTAs and the Oscar nominations haven’t even been announced yet, but we are closer than we were yesterday.
I have watched all of the nominated films*
*Only in the categories of Drama and Musical/Comedy. Only one of the foreign films "Roma" and no animated films. But also not all of the individually nominated films like I didn't see Willem Dafoe's performance in "Eternity's Gate" nor did I see John C. Reilly in "Stan and Ollie" but I saw him in "The Sisters Brothers" and how dissimilar could him playing Oliver Hardy be from that character. So outside of these exceptions, yes, I have seen all of the films...
Except for Glenn Close in "The Wife".
As I said, I have watched all of the nominated films.
Didn’t see him at The Golden Globes so I’m going to cheat fe.and add Colman Domingo who killed it at the BAFTA Tea and the AFI Awards this past weekend.
So who were the winners and the losers both for awards and fashion?
