I graduated High School the year of the Bicentennial, 1976. It of course became the theme of our graduation. Honestly all I remember was looking forward to getting out and getting on with my life, though I had no idea about what I was going to do.

Fortunately the father of children I babysat for through my teens, made a few calls and I got a job in a retail jewelry store even though I had no experience. That door opening led to other opportunities and eventaully to a career in New York City’s jewelry district for many years.
We can never know exactly what the future holds, but often meeting the right people at the right time, or using an opportunity that comes along as a stepping stone, can lead us to a place we may never have thought of going. I have seen that played out in my life, looking back at how things unfolded.
There were times I felt “stuck” but changed direction even though I had been resistant at first, only to learn the direction I was headed led to another opportunity.

At this stage of my life I grab onto each day, not really focusing on the future so much. You know the saying, “The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” Or “Mann Tracht, Un Gott Lacht” is an old Yiddish adage meaning, “Man Plans, and God Laughs.” Despite our most careful planning, the Road of Life is unpredictable. We might have driving and destination plans but unforeseen roadblocks can deter us.
