A downloadable game for Windows and macOS

Play the Nightmere demo for free and follow a young Amelia – during and before – the events of the main game. This is the best way for you to know exactly what you’re backing!

NIGHTMERE

Nightmere is a detective-mystery game with psychological horror elements fused into it. You play as Amelia, a burnt-out private investigator who reluctantly takes on a missing-persons case in the small, quiet town of Nightmere – and finds something much darker.

Nightmere is a love letter to all of the mystery novels and games I grew up loving. Many games – all varying in genre –  inspired Nightmere, including Your Turn To Die, Silent Hill, Paper Lily, Undertale, Doki Doki Literature Club, Signalis, Ace Attorney, and OMORI.

Nightmere has long evolved from a small, fun passion project with my friends to a fully-fledged indie game with a grand story, unique characters, and real heart put into it – a game we hope you are able to soon enjoy too!

STORY

The year is 1991. Amelia, a young and burnt-out detective, finds herself in the small, quiet town of Nightmere to investigate the disappearance of an up-and-coming med student: Sarah.

The Client, who is Sarah’s brother, insists on helping Amelia with solving the case. Throughout the game, you’ll play as the bright young PI Amelia.

As you walk around town figuring out clues to where Sarah might be, the story progresses further.

You’ll make many friends – or enemies – along the way; it’s up to you to figure out who is on your side.

But something is watching you.

Very quickly, you’ll realize that there is something dark in the town of Nightmere. Not everything is as it seems. The people all around you are wearing masks. Even you.

What happened to Sarah? What happened in Nightmere?

…And what happened to you?

The longer you stay in Nightmere, the more the town will peel off the mask you wear. There’s something just beyond the mere, hiding in the woods. Something that will shed the truth about the town, and you.

The only question is, at what cost?

Featured here is a 2-hour demo meant to demonstrate mechanics and story found in Nightmere Act I, including a few snippets directly from it. Go play it!

BERJAYA

Be not afraid of the truth; fear its consequences.

The town never forgets.

I just recently heard about this game yesterday, I guess it looked interesting enough for me to immediately pledge $85 on Kickstarter, I just decided to play it today, I don't really know that much how to download stuff on computers but I luckily managed to download the demo, the only problem is an issue that I had on my Mac, I tried both desktop and through the itch desktop app and kept getting the same issue. When the game opens, the audio can be heard, and when I press the up and down arrow keys I hear a sound that I assume is from the game (I'm not sure what other buttons worked I only tried those 2) but the issue lies in the fact that all I see is it forcing fullscreen but its a completely black screen, the game sounds like it's running fine but I can't see anything. I tried bypassing the gatekeeper, I tried forcing windowed mode, after hearing about it, I think it might be a video rendering error or something but I don't know, I don't even know if the issue is a problem with my computer but I though it would be a good idea to at least let you know. I am really excited to see the further development of this game and hope it has a good future.

BERJAYAHi, I just launched the game (I couldn't do it before because I have an AZERTY keyboard and couldn't find the command to start it) and I noticed a bug—there's some text that keeps appearing that says “Back the Kickstarter.” Maybe it goes away later; I haven't checked yet.

In any case, the game makes me want to play it :) Congratulations on your incredible work, and have a great day!

(P.S.: I created a wiki for the game (link to the wiki: https://nightmere.fandom.com/wiki/NIGHTMERE_Wiki), but I need images without backgrounds, so if you have any, I’d be interested!)

wow can't believe that slipped past, it's fixed now. sorry for the inconvenience! - programmer

great game i've been waiting for the demo and now i cant wait to play the full game.

Really great game in terms of the demo, but I would like to see better graphics in the full release. Bugs are obviously going to be an issue so I wont complain about that but other than the graphics and random bugs, this has some serious potential to be an amazing game.

Lovely! Multiple endings, a bit of stress and a whole story to uncover! Can't wait for the whole game

thank you so much! please consider helping us fund the full game on our Kickstarter, and im glad you enjoyed it!

If you enjoyed the demo, please support the full release by backing us on Kickstarter! We're close to 100 backers!

Alr the game has minor bugs, like frame spikes where it stops for a sec, the poolroom section where you have to move the pipes are overall bug and it doesn't let you exit that action, great game i hope it gets fixed soon

Really enjoyed the game and the cool alternate endings. I found some bugs and had some issues with the story but those same issues were already mentioned in a previous comment.

hiiiii! i love your content and would love to try out the demo, though i am  scaried of basically everything soooo, but my main point there is actually that i cant play the demo of some reason, i download and get the demo but when i try the open the game i tells me that there might be malware in it so it wont let me play, do you know how to fix it ?

i am using a mac if that helps , sorry if i stress you but it's just i really wanna play it and idk if this is also happening to other mac users . thank you so much and good luck on your game

go to security  in settings and scroll allll the way down, there should be a button to let you "open anyways"

i finished the game. i will now hurt your feelings and tell you everything that i hated!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ok maybe not like that but... this game is littered with a bunch of little flaws. contains mild spoilers

(played on windows btw)

Art:

honestly, my only issue with the art is how the overworld and pixel art looked, and it mainly has to do with the environment and its colors. It feels like those colors are a bit saturated and bright, so it could use some toning down.

also why are amelias arms like that? her arms are longer on the back/front sprites than left/right. left/right makes her arms look short and stubby.

Music:

nothing wrong with the music, but just out of curiosity, may I ask why certain rooms have their own themes? Like it's funny how the staff room has a different theme than the staff lounge.

Story:

No real critique, but I feel like the characters are a little dumb for being detectives. like... "how could a random swimmer know that?" I kinda just sighed. This is information you can just look up on the internet. Especially with the fact that the game developer knows this information. These are people with brains and an access to knowledge!!!! The discrimination!!!!111!!!! Thankfully, Amelia recognized this, but jeez...

Gameplay/Bugs:

here's where the juice is. i seriously had to get a notepad to write down everything for this review. i swear i'm not a professional. Like take a look at my inconsistent capitalization during this entire thing.

Starting with the positives, i do like the main thing where you really have to pay attention to details in environment and dialogue and logic. it's gameplay inspired by ace attorney, i heard, but i never played that game so i have no idea how that game works so i wont be able to draw comparisons to it.

During the last "fight" (funny how they're called fights/battles) i felt like i didn't have the evidence I needed (i did) and I felt the need to abort out of the battle to explore a little more (worst mistake ever i ended up walking around the map painfully for a very long time.) I don't know if an abort option would be necessary in this game, but perhaps there should be one perchance.

There's ONE really really big and ANNOYING BUG at the last part of the game before the last fight. it's the one where everyone is in the storage room before they move to the lockers. When they move to the lockers, sometimes (a lot of the time) they will respawn BACK in the storage room AND OUT OF the locker room.

I believe it happens when you leave the storage room to the pool then go into another room, then back to the pool. This was a real pain in my ass. please fix this. this is by far the worst complaint in this review.

anyway last up, why were amelias suspects for the murderer her friends plus the lifeguard. that's just kinda strange.

Extra:

I honestly liked the previous name of this game "Graywood" better. iirc it got changed because it was already taken or something.

You sly dog!!!!! You really think you can add the god damn Yo Gurt joke in the game and think I wouldn't notice!!!!!!!!!! (it was pretty obvious you probably expected people to notice)

Conclusion:

Sorry if i seemed a bit mean. there's only so many positive things i can say about a game, and I don't want to sugarcoat anything. making a game is hard and sometimes you might think your game is ASS and someone ends up saying its ASS and it actually is ASS-(jk)

I've been kind of excited for this game to come out ever since I saw the devlogs on instagram. i really like and would love to support indie game devs. gamedev is cool.

I'm honestly anticipating the future of this game and what's to come. I'll be here when Act I releases.

bye

This game has a lot of potential. There are definitely some things that could be improved, but for now I want to focus on the aspects I enjoyed the most.

1. The Art:

Even though some facial expressions could feel more genuine and emotionally expressive, I understand this is still a demo. The art style itself is unique and fits the tone of the game really well I love it.

2. The Music:

Personally, this was my favorite aspect of the game. The soundtrack does not feel like random music simply placed into the scenes; it genuinely matches the tone of the narrative and helps make the story more immersive. My favorite track was the one used during the argument gameplay. It creates a tense, conflict-driven atmosphere, while still being catchy enough that it does not feel repetitive as you check evidence and think about what to say next.

3. The Story:

I really enjoyed the way the mystery builds up. Not necessarily the main mystery we are supposed to solve in the demo, since that one felt a bit obvious, but rather the unexplained details surrounding the world and the characters. Those elements make you want to theorize, which makes the game much more interesting and fits perfectly with its tone. I also think this is a great way to build hype around the full game.

4. Gameplay:

I found out about this game because it was promoted as a “Ace attorney-Omori” game, and it definitely captures that feeling. The argument sections, the investigation elements, and the overall structure clearly appeal to fans of that kind of gameplay.

There are still some things that I think need polishing, such as certain aspects of the pixel art and gameplay, but considering this is only a demo, I completely understand. I really hope this game gets funded, because it has amazing potential.

Will do my best to promote it, good luck

hi

i just wanted to say a few things (complain) before i started the game

my observation skills may not be the best, but i was scrolling on the kickstarter page looking for the link to itch page. it wasn't exactly in a clear spot.

second, theres no way to leave the options menu once its open. I tried pressing Z, X, Enter- nvm it was Esc.

last, the taskbar won't go away.  yeah.

just a little rant. i will play the game and leave another comment later
