So I actually wrote a little ficlet a while back for the Three-Sentence Ficathon. The prompt was: "LOTR/Silmarillion/The Hobbit, how is it that the goblins in The Hobbit could identify two swords that had not been seen for more than four thousand years? What kind of oral history do orcs have, anyway?"
And what I wrote was:
I kept intending to go back and write more, because three sentences is very low stakes and I figured I could manage at least a handful, and it was fun to come up with something short but still impactful in some way. I still have the tab open, actually. But I never wrote any more, and it wasn't even because of the actual writing part so much as knowing I'd have to go through pages and pages of prompts, and the time investment involved was just too discouraging :P
I do note that No True Pair is starting, though, and I remember having a lot of fun with that back in the day. Maybe that would be manageable. Maybe I should give it a try. Although I honestly don't even know what characters I'd pick these days.
And what I wrote was:
Some memories are written deep into the subconscious, unspoken but known nonetheless. Some wounds cut deep enough that the legend of the scars never entirely fades. Some sights - a flash of silver, a glint of steel - stir up those dark, forgotten corners of the mind and say "here, here is the fang that bites, here is that which would cut the heart from you; here is your doom".
