I'm not sure how likely it is, but if we manage to get about 450 more submissions in the next 8 hours or so, that'll be 23,000 by the end of the day. :) In theory very attainable, as most days of the survey so far have been over 1,000!
Do you think the number of survey responses might’ve peaked in 2021 and 2024 and are now trending downward? What might be causing that? Hesitation to disclose nonbinary status? Different usage of social media over the years leading to fewer people seeing the survey or to fewer people clicking on it?
Okay, so, I am showing this graph with the HUGE CAVEAT that
So my guess is that we MAY, PERHAPS, end up with a final participant number in the low 30,000s.
The thing is, this number goes up and down based on all kinds of unknowable things, all working in combination, and I have varying amounts of control over any of them.
This year, I’m trying out a new survey provider. This contributes to us having technical issues within the first 48 hours, which means probably more people giving up mid-survey, and definitely me having to divert time and energy from promotion into technical work behind-the-scenes. The behind-the-scenes UI being very different to what I’m used to has also had a knock-on effect on my promotional work.
No matter what, people speculate on why the survey is getting more or fewer responses than usual. I remember a time when it was booming and people were discussing whether it might be because I posted it during term time and academic people were sending it to their colleagues and classmates and students and so on. Ultimately, there are so many different kinds of people participating from so many different timezones and cultures that it just isn’t possible to know.
But I think my main take on this question is: I think it is way too soon to speculate about whether survey participation has “peaked” and is trending downward. There’s only been one complete year since the record number of responses!
Readers who want to mess around with this extremely meta data may wish to send the survey to their favourite Big Name Queers, and/or promote the survey on several platforms and in innovative ways!

And related to that, for one of my classes I'm doing a study on the relationship between time within the greater fandom community and understanding of fanfiction-related jargon. Below I have the link to the survey which will just have three multiple choice questions relating to your relationship to fandom and then a list of 15 terms to define if you know them.

Did it! I do wish it had "Canon Divergence" as a term to define, though. I will continue to insist that AU and Canon Divergence are two entirely different things, despite them becoming homogenized over the last half decade or so.
The original list was 30 terms but I was told to cut it down, but shockingly "Canon Divergence" wasn't one of them, so I'm glad you pointed that out!
I have thought about doing this thing again over the summer just for personal purposes with a lot more terms and a longer time to collect data. This version is very limited by the fact that I have to do this in a short time frame and get professor approval for things, thus causing things to be a LOT simpler than I'd like. If I did this again I'd address some minor issues that people have pointed out as well as add more terms (both older terms and just more terms in general lol).
Fair, fair! I am very familiar with having to limit studies due to time/professor constraints.
Drabble was one of the original 30 terms I had at first before I had to cut the list down! So yeah I'll def add that when I eventually do a longer version without time/academic restrictions this summer! As for ficlet and oneshot I can absolutely add those ones too. It'd be fascinating to see the kind of variety that people give for their definitions. I'll just have to come up with a solid definition so I can judge by correct/partially correct/incorrect.
@thatgayunoriginalbastard Fanlore is probably a good place to find solid definitions for many fandom terms. Most pages on the wiki also include histories behind the terms, and how the definitions might have expanded or changed over time.

However, thanks to all of the responses and ideas people have given, I will be doing this again in the future, addressing any of the issues AND adding a lot more terms (to all the people who have said this should have had A/B/O, proshipper, and fully outdated old terms, I hear you). I'm interested in understanding fans' perspectives on and experiences with generative AI (text and image generation software). That means perceptions both positive and negative! However you feel about genAI, I'm interested in hearing from you.
