Haruki Murakami je japonský autor, ktorý spája bežnú realitu so surrealistickými motívmi. Romány ako Nórske drevo či Kafka na pobreží skúmajú samotu a vnútorné prázdno postáv. Píše jednoducho, no s jemnou symbolikou a hudobným rytmom.
Tóru takto mimovoľne priťahuje ľudí nevšedných schopností a výnimočných osudov a prežíva s nimi neobyčajné situácie.
Porozpráva jej o päťčlennej partii z gymnázia, v ktorej strávil najkrajšie roky mladosti, až kým ho z nej nečakane a definitívne nevylúčili.
Titul vyšiel v anglickom jazyku pod názvom The Elephant Vanishes.
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of 1Q84 and The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle comes a relentlessly inventive novel that dives deep into the very nature of consciousness. “Fantastical, mysterious, and funny . . . a fantasy world that might have been penned by Franz Kafka.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer Across two parallel narratives, Murakami draws readers into a mind-bending universe in which Lauren Bacall, Bob Dylan, a split-brained data processor, a deranged scientist, his shockingly undemure granddaughter, and various thugs, librarians, and subterranean monsters collide to dazzling effect. What emerges is a hyperkinetic novel that is at once hilariously funny and a deeply serious meditation on the nature and uses of the mind.
'A stunning work of art that bears no comparisons' the New York Observer wrote of The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, 'and this is also true of this magnificent new novel, which is every bit as ambitious, expansive and bewitching. A tour-de-force of metaphysical reality, Kafka on the Shore is powered by two remarkable characters. At fifteen, Kafka Tamura runs away from home, either to escape a gruesome oedipal prophecy or to search for his long-missing mother and sister. And the aging Nakata, tracker of lost cats, who never recovered from a bizarre childhood affliction, finds his highly simplified life suddenly overturned. Their parallel odysseys, as mysterious to us as they are to them, are enriched throughout by vivid accomplices and mesmerizing events. Fish tumble in storms from the sky; cats and people carry on conversations; a ghostlike pimp employs a Hegel-quoting prostitute, a forest harbors soldiers apparently unaged since World War II. There is a brutal murder, with the identity of both victim and perpetrator a riddle. Yet this, like everything else, is eventually answered, just as the entwined destinies of Kafka and Nakata are gradually revealed, with one escaping his fate entirely and the other given a fresh start on his own.
An ode to George Orwell's "1984" told in alternating male and female voices relates the stories of Aomame, an assassin for a secret organization who discovers that she has been transported to an alternate reality, and Tengo, a mathematics lecturer and novice writer.

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Including the story "Drive My Car”—now an Academy Award–nominated film—this collection from the internationally acclaimed author "examines what happens to characters without important women in their lives; it'll move you and confuse you and sometimes leave you with more questions than answers" (Barack Obama). Here are lovesick doctors, students, ex-boyfriends, actors, bartenders, and even Kafka’s Gregor Samsa, brought together to tell stories that speak to us all. NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A GLOBE AND MAIL BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR • A REAL SIMPLE BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR From the author of Norwegian Wood and Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World comes a poignant love story and quest, celebrating books and the libraries that house them. When a young man's girlfriend mysteriously disappears, he is heartbroken and determined to find the imaginary town where he believes she has gone. This lifelong search leads him into middle age and a job at a remote library filled with its own mysteries. He journeys between the real world and a shadowless city where unicorns roam and willow trees grow. There, he discovers his beloved working in a dream library, but she has no memory of their past together. As seasons change and the man grapples with the blurred lines between these two worlds, he must confront what he is willing to sacrifice. This narrative serves as a parable for our times, exploring themes of love, loss, and the transformative power of stories. "Truth is not found in fixed stillness, but in ceaseless change/movement. Isn't this the quintessential core of what stories are all about?” —Haruki Murakami, from the afterword.
Set at the time of the catastrophic 1995 Kobe earthquake, the mesmerizing stories in After the Quake are as haunting as dreams and as potent as oracles. An electronics salesman who has been deserted by his wife agrees to deliver an enigmatic package— and is rewarded with a glimpse of his true nature. A man who views himself as the son of God pursues a stranger who may be his human father. A mild-mannered collection agent receives a visit from a giant talking frog who enlists his help in saving Tokyo from destruction. The six stories in this collection come from the deep and mysterious place where the human meets the inhuman—and are further proof that Murakami is one of the most visionary writers at work today.
The eight stories in this new book are all told in the first person by a classic Murakami narrator. From memories of youth, meditations on music, and an ardent love of baseball, to dreamlike scenarios and invented jazz albums, together these stories challenge the boundaries between our minds and the exterior world. Occasionally, a narrator may or may not be Murakami himself. Is it memoir or fiction? The reader decides. Philosophical and mysterious, the stories in First Person Singular all touch beautifully on love and solitude, childhood and memory. . . all with a signature Murakami twist.
She waited on tables as usual that day, her twentieth birthday. She always worked Fridays, but if things had gone according to plan on that particular Friday, she would have had the night off. One rainy Tokyo night, a waitress's uneventful twentieth birthday takes a strange and fateful turn when she's asked to deliver dinner to the restaurant's reclusive owner. Birthday Girl is a beguiling, exquisitely satisfying taste of master storytelling, published to celebrate Murakami's 70th birthday.

In 1984, Aomame, a woman with two differently sized ears, commits an assassination during a rendezvous with a wealthy oil dealer, seeking to right a past wrong. Meanwhile, Tengo, an aspiring writer, is tasked with rewriting a novel by the eccentric 17-year-old Fukaeri to help her win a literary prize. Though the story is highly original, it is poorly written, making this a risky endeavor. Aomame begins to question why her crime has not been reported in the news and wonders if she has entered a parallel world. To distinguish this eerie realm from her ordinary life in 1984, she names it 1Q84. The narrative intertwines the lives of Aomame and Tengo as they navigate their respective journeys, exploring themes of reality, identity, and the nature of existence.
The journey of Haruki Murakami from a jazz bar owner to a literary sensation began in 1978 when a moment of inspiration struck him during a baseball game. His debut novel, Hear the Wind Sing, garnered acclaim and set the stage for subsequent works like A Wild Sheep Chase and Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. However, it was the 1987 release of Norwegian Wood that catapulted him to international fame, establishing his reputation as a bestselling author and introducing readers to his captivating and distinctive fictional world.
"A Wild Sheep Chase" - His life was like his recurring nightmare: a train to nowhere. But an ordinary life has a way of taking an extraordinary turn. Add a girl whose ears are so exquisite that, when uncovered, they improve sex a thousand-fold, a runaway friend, a right-wing politico, an ovine-obsessed professor and a manic-depressive in a sheep outfit, implicate them in a hunt for a sheep, that may or may not be running the world, and the upshot is another singular masterpiece from Haruki Murakami. "Dance Dance Dance" - High-class call girls billed to Mastercard; a psychic thirteen-year-old drop-out with a passion for Talking Heads; a hunky matinee idol doomed to play dentists and teachers; a one-armed beach-combing poet, an uptight hotel clerk and one very bemused narrator caught in the web of advanced capitalist mayhem; combine this offbeat cast of characters with Murakami's idiosyncratic prose and out comes "Dance Dance Dance". It is an assault on the senses, part murder mystery, part metaphysical speculation; a fable for our times as catchy as a rock song blasting from the window of a sports car.
A major new anthology of great Japanese short stories introduced by Haruki Murakami. This fantastically varied and exciting collection celebrates the great Japanese short story collection, from its origins in the nineteenth century to the remarkable practitioners writing today. Curated by Jay Rubin (who has himself freshly translated several of the stories) and introduced by Haruki Murakami this is a book which will be a revelation to many of its readers. Short story writers already well-known to English-language readers are all included - Tanizaki, Akutagawa, Murakami, Mishima, Kawabata, Yoshimoto - but also many surprising new finds. From Tsushima Yuko's 'Flames' to Sawanishi Yuten's 'Filling Up with Sugar', from Hoshi Shin'ichi's 'Shoulder-Top Secretary' to Yoshimoto Banana's 'Bee Honey', The Penguin Book of Japanese Short Stories is filled with fear, charm, beauty and comedy.

An intimate conversation about music and creativity, between the internationally bestselling writer and a world-class conductor. 'My only purpose in this book was for me, as a music lover, to have a discussion of music with the musician Seiji Ozawa that was as open and honest as possible. I simply wanted to bring out the ways that each of us (though on vastly different levels) is dedicated to music.' Haruki Murakami's passion for music runs deep. Before turning his hand to writing, he ran a jazz club in Tokyo, and the aesthetic and emotional power of music permeates every one of his much-loved books. Now, in Absolutely on Music, Murakami fulfills a personal dream, sitting down with his friend, acclaimed conductor Seiji Ozawa, to talk about their shared interest. Transcribed from lengthy conversations about the nature of music and writing, here they discuss everything from Brahms to Beethoven, from Leonard Bernstein to Glenn Gould, from record collecting to pop-up orchestras, and much more. Ultimately this book gives readers an unprecedented glimpse into the minds of two maestros.
Haruki Murakami's beloved short stories are now presented in graphic novel form for the first time in English. This volume, the first of three, features four captivating tales from his bestselling collections, blending realism and fantasy while exploring themes of loss, remorse, and confusion.
In "Super-Frog Saves Tokyo," Katagiri encounters a giant frog promising to save Tokyo from another earthquake, leading him to question reality and confront his feelings of powerlessness. "Where I'm Likely to Find It" follows a woman whose missing husband prompts a detective to reflect on his own life amidst a Kafkaesque exploration of disappearance and coping.
"Birthday Girl" recounts a surreal encounter on a woman's twentieth birthday with her restaurant's owner, who grants her a wish. "The Seventh Man" tells the poignant story of a man haunted by the death of his childhood friend in a tsunami, capturing Murakami's signature emotional depth and surrealism.
This graphic adaptation offers a fresh perspective on Murakami's work, appealing to both dedicated fans and younger readers new to his stories. Recommended for ages 16 and up due to mature themes and graphic content.
In this enviable gathering, Haruki Murakami has chosen for his party some of the very best short story writers of recent years, each with their own birthday experiences, each story a snapshot of life on a single day. Including stories by Russell Banks, Et
"The international literary icon opens his eclectic closet: Here are photographs of Murakami's extensive and personal T-shirt collection, accompanied by essays that reveal a side of the writer rarely seen by the public. Considered "the world's most popular cult novelist" (The Guardian), Haruki Murakami's books have galvanized millions around the world. Many of his fans know about his 10,000 vinyl record collection, and his obsession with running, but few have heard about a more intimate, and perhaps more unique, passion: his T-shirt collecting habit. In Murakami T, the famously reclusive novelist shows us his T-shirts--including gems from the Springsteen on Broadway show in NYC, from The Beach Boys concert in Honolulu to the shirt that inspired the beloved short story, "Tony Takitani." Accompanied by short, frank essays that have been translated into English for the first time, these photographs reveal much about Murakami's multifaceted and wonderfully eccentric persona"--Publisher's description
Hear the Wind Sing is Murakami's first novel, available for the first time in English outside Japan. In Hear the Wind Sing the narrator is home from college on his summer break. He spends his time drinking beer and smoking in Jâe(tm)s Bar with the Rat, listening to the radio, thinking about writing and the women he has slept with, and pursuing a relationship with a girl with nine fingers. The story of the narrator, the Rat and J continues in Pinball, 1973.
Pinball, 1973 is Murakami's second novel, available for the first time in English outside Japan. With a new introduction by the author. Hear the Wind Sing and Pinball, 1973 are Haruki Murakamiâe(tm)s earliest novels. They follow the fortunes of the narrator and his friend, known only by his nickname, the Rat. Pinball, 1973 picks up three years after the events of Hear the Wind Sing. The narrator has moved to Tokyo to work as a translator and live with indistinguishable twin girls, but the Rat has remained behind, despite his efforts to leave both the town and his girlfriend. The narrator finds himself haunted by memories of his own doomed relationship but also, more bizarrely, by his short-lived obsession with playing pinball in Jâe(tm)s Bar. This sends him on a quest to find the exact model of pinball machine he had enjoyed playing years earlier: the three-flipper Spaceship.
A dual-language edition of Japanese stories—many appearing in English for the first time This volume of eight short stories, with parallel translations, offers students at all levels the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of contemporary literature without having constantly to refer back to a dictionary. The stories—many of which appear here in English for the first time—are by well-known writers like Haruki Murakami and Banana Yoshimoto, as well as emerging voices like Abe Kazushige, Ishii Shinji, and Kawakami Hiromi. From the orthodox to the cutting-edge, they represent a range of styles and themes, showcasing the diversity of Japanese fiction over the past few decades in a collection that is equally rewarding for beginning, intermediate, and advanced students of English or Japanese. Complete with notes, the stories make excellent reading in either language.
An ode to George Orwell's "1984" told in alternating male and female voices relates the stories of Aomame, an assassin for a secret organization who discovers that she has been transported to an alternate reality, and Tengo, a mathematics lecturer and novice writer.
