The Hotter than July Bellydance Extravaganza is a celebration of the Girls Raks Bellydance and Body Image Summer Program.  The event will be held July 9, 2011 at 1:00pm at the La Peña Cultural Center at 3105 Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley.  Now in its second year and led by Raks Africa, Girls Raks is a fun and engaging summer program for girls ages 13-19.  The goal of the program is to provide survival tools for girls of all sizes who may struggle with body image and self-esteem issues.  The two-week program gives teenage girls an opportunity to have a body-positive experience, free of judgment and competition.

A $10 to $20 donation at the door is suggested.  The Extravaganza features Bay Area bellydance treasures Nanna Candelaria, Ahava, Monica Berini, Khalilah, Queenie TT, Asata Iman, Zadiyah, Raks al Khalil, Shabnam’s Ooh La La Dancers, Monica McCartney and a special performance from summer program participants, Girls Raks and event producers, Raks Africa.

So it was suggested that I advertise some of the pretties I make while participating in a thread on someone else's post. Well here it is.

I make jewelry from time to time, sometimes with nice materials, when I can afford them (which hasn't happened of late) and sometimes with the materials I can get from the pegs at Hobby Lobby. I work mostly with just beads, I haven't broken into wire wrapping or anything like that just yet, but in my etsy shop are some examples of what I do:

Etsy Shop!

I can make stuff with requested colors/materials/ideas, etc. to go with costumes and so on.

So, yay, sparklies.

So I wrote a small piece in my LJ about a dance journey and about becoming an artist. I thought I would share it here and at BERJAYAbellydancing in the hopes that it might be useful to others (even though I'm a little nervous about it :)

Go to http://folkloricfusion.livejournal.com/27936.html to read it. Mods, if this is not appropriate, feel free to delete :)

The Red Tent is pleased and honored to bring you Gypsy Caravan Collective Soul in Seattle taught by the fabulous Paulette Rees-Denis

BERJAYA

October 10-11-12 2008 Skin Deep Studios Seattle WA.
This intensive program combines dance workouts and yoga stretches with aerobic toning and strengthening drills, several hours of tribal Bellydance, and participation in assorted levels of evening dance classes.
What we will cover?
Coming together to study the Gypsy Caravan Tribal Technique, we will:
• Improve your technique with Level One and Two moves
• Learn new steps and refine the moves you already know
• Build your confidence as a dancer, leading and following
• Strengthen your improvisational skills
• Learn rhythm identification and different zill patterns, and dance with them!
• Participate in discussions about tribal Bellydance history, artistry, and integrity.
• Have a great time dancing together as a circle of women, feeling the community spirit of this dance!
• You will be tested at the end of the session, and if you pass, you will be certified in Gypsy Caravan's Level One Collective Soul Tribal Bellydance Movement and Certification program! In the event you do not pass at this time, you can be re-tested at a later date. No worries, it is an intensive program and some of us need longer for additional study.

•This is a pre-requisite for the Gypsy Caravan Teacher Training program and will allow you to move into Collective Soul Level Two.
The Gypsy Caravan Tribal Bellydance Collective Soul Certification Program, with the various levels of study, means that when you are awarded your certificate, you know and have begun to master the levels and layers in the Gypsy Caravan Tribal Style Bellydance movement course! We want to help you be the best dancer you can be, and Gypsy Caravan style format assists with learning the basic dance language, how to best use your body, and how to be an ethical and creative artist. It has also been a proven method in bringing the tribes together from around the world, our Collective Soul.
This program has been in demand for years. We are very excited about offering it, so dancers can have a chance to learn by an intensive method, in a wonderful and fun environment, and with personal attention.
This is a way to have formal recognition for your hard work and dedication in learning this unique and versatile style of dance. This will give you the tools you need to better your dance, with knowledge and body skills.
All levels of dancers welcome—except brand new tribal dancers—some experience requested please.
Write dance@gypsycaravan.us to request application and make your deposit.
Space is limited, so don't wait!
Dance fees for the program $550.00
Deposit of non-refundable $100.00 payable to Caravan Studio, with application is due September 20 2008.
Balance due October 5 2008.
We will send you the schedule and what to bring upon registration or request. This fee does not include travel, meals, or accommodations. Check back for hotel recommendation and help finding a roommate.

Please help Sulyman el Coyote [May. 30th, 2008|11:43 am]

Last week, the gifted musician and metalworker, Sulyman el Coyote, lost everything he owned (including his instruments and workshops) in a fire in the Santa Cruz mountains.

If you have been dancing for any length of time, you know Sulyman as one half of the legendary band Sirocco. He and his bandmate, Armando ("Uncle") Mafufo, have been providing unsurpassed music and instruction for dancers and musicians for decades. Their music has enjoyed a renaissance as Tribal-style dancers have rediscovered their classic albums.

I had the great opportunity to dance briefly with them as a baby dancer and it was like a dream come true. They are truly sensitive artists who work with their dancers to create beauty.

There is a link on the Sirocco website to assist Sulyman in his time of need. The page is not loading right now, but please keep trying. If you are new to their music, take a moment to enjoy some samples of their work, and maybe buy a cd or two for yourself.

cross posted, and please spread the word yourselves
