 | 06:18 pm - Any harpists out there? I've been primarily a singer, and, I'm just edging a toe into storytelling. However, for as long as I can remember, I've wanted to play the harp.
On one hand, I do not believe in buying a poor instrument (or any tool) just because you're a beginner. It only leads to frustration. On the other hand, it's hard to justify spending a couple thousand dollars on an instrument you're just beginning to play.
I was wondering if anyone here could tell me about the harpsicle. It was recommended here as a good inexpensive option for beginners. I'd also be curious to know what you'd recommend for a beginner... and at what point you'd advise someone to just move on to a more expensive harp. (For example, would I quickly outgrow the harpsicle because it has no levers (though it would certainly be more period for the SCA I would think)?
Thank you for your advice.

 | 07:38 pm "Life is Only As good as the memories we make And I'm taking back what belongs to me These relics of remembrence Are just like shipwrecks Only they're gone faster Than the smell after it rains
So long astoria I found a map to buried treasure And even if we come home empty handed Well still have our stories Of battle scars, pirate ships and wounded hearts, Broken bones, and all the best of friendships
And when this hourglass Has filtered out Its final grain of sand I raise my glass to the memories we had This is my wish"
Lets resurrect this community. I'm not about to let the ideals of Bardic Cirle die. I've got too many stories left in me. Too many songs to sing, and too many games to play to let it be over. Who's with me!?

 | 11:03 am Thanks for letting me into the Virtual Fire! (Would have posted sooner, but I wasn't aware that my settings just had me "watching" this group. :) DOH!)
Well, the list seems to have gone through a bit of a dormancy. Maybe we can wake folks up a little.
Fionnghuala here; Celtic musician and SCAdian, among other interests. I perform folk harp, vocals and woodwinds; my repertoire includes both traditional folk songs and original compositions.
I HATE filks. And I sure seem to write a lot of them. :)
Do any of you folks gather at Pennsic War? If so, perhaps we'll meet this August. Current Music: CSN&Y - Find the Cost of Freedom Current Mood: bouncy

Bardic Circle Tonight!!! A friendly reminder... YOU BETTER BE THERE... *Shakes fist* ^_^
It's at the Kripalu lake house (directions to Kripalu) at 8 o'clock. Bring Candles, and water, and snacks, and pillows and all the jazz.
More importantly though, bring something to share and lots of good energy. Bring theatre games, and chants, and silly stories, and anything you think people will like.
We'll try to call the regular people and round you all up. We may fail, if so just come anyway.
I love you all, hope to see you there.
Darwin
PS:If you absolutely need to call someone and ask them about something or other call:
Darwin: 413 445 4947 or 413 446 3414 or 413 698 2431 (neither of those is my house, but that's where I'll probably be, if not at the first number) Current Mood: ecstatic

 | 02:07 am - EDITED
So, we tried to organize a bardic circle for this coming Saturday. That's not happening. Too short of notice. We got lots of maybes, probably nots, and noes. So...
Bardic Circle!!!
Saturday, December 4!
(two saturdays from now)
It'll be at the kripalu lake house. We'll meet people in kripalu around 8, (EDIT){Kaya doesn't want to meet in kripalu, we'll have to work something else out} and head down to the lake house together so that we don't have a tons of vehicles, and so that people don't get lost looking for that tiny, easily missable road. If you're going to get there at a different time either respond asking for directions (which Kaya will have to give, or you can get them from the people inside Kripalu because I can't remember exactly where the road is), or make a time and one of us can go up and meet you there.
For directions to kripalu click here.
What to bring:
Blankets, pillows, beanbags, anything that can make you and others comfy and warm. It won't be as cold as our first lake house bardic circle was, but it'll still be nice to get warm in a big pile of people.
Snacks, water, soda, things to share. We'll have a hot plate, for warming up water for tea, cocoa, instant soup things like that. (EDIT) Please, at least bring water for yourself. People will probably share, but no promises.
Musical instruments, peoms, and songs, and games, and anything fun and creative you can think of to share with people.
(EDIT)A candle! We're going to use candle to light the place, and take a bunch and put them in the middle like a improvised camp fire. If you can bring mroe than one candle, great, but try to bring at least one.
A friend! Or two, or three, with bardic circle is almost always good to have lots of people. It makes the games better, and it's more fun to tell stories to a big group.
Yourself, in everything that you are, and with everything you have to give. Don't be ashamed, or shy, because this is one of the few places in this world where you are allowed and incouraged to be yourself, and have fun, even if it seems "childish"
Energy! We like to move around, and get the energy up, and it's always good to have more people with lots of positive energy to help our cause. A good flow of energy can sometimes make people that would normally just be spectators play games with us, and share their songs, and poems. Even just incouraging energy, while being comfy is helpful. Clap, and cheer, and laugh and smile. You don't have to jump around to share your energy. (This might be the most important thing to bring)
So, I hope to see you all there. If you need a ride, or can give a ride please leave a comment with where you'd need to be picked up from, would be willing to go, how many people can fit in your car, etc... Current Mood: accomplished

 | 11:12 pm Emergency bardic circle!!! We need one badly! I doubt anyone will disagree.
We need:
A Space A Date and Time (within the next two or three weeks would be good) And a Shit Load of People to Have a Shit Load of Fun!
Tell Everyone who would be interested (and not fuck with the mood, you know the type of people I mean)
Reply here with the best time or times for you so we can work out something that works for everyone
And if you have somewhere we can use let us know. If we can work out a time I might be able to get a room or lounge in the art/theatre building at bcc for us to use.
Please! Tell everyone and tell me when the best time is so we can plan. I'm running low on cuddles and creativity!
Love and hugs and all that junk Darwin Lain
