A Sort of Farewell.
After eight years of music, friendship, laughter, adventure, bliss, blood, sweat, tears, and everything else that goes along with it, As Tall As Lions are retiring for the foreseeable future. There is no sadness on our side, and we hope there is none on yours. We will be playing a handful of shows across the country to try and give everyone an opportunity to see us one last time.

12/17: Los Angeles - The Troubadour
12/19: Chicago - Lincoln Hall
12/21: New York City - Highline Ballroom

Tickets will go on sale at 10AM local time this Saturday.

Our sincerest apologies to those who can't join us at these celebrations, but know you will be there in spirit. Much love to you all, and thanks again for everything.

Without ATAL we are left with the "side project", KILIMANJARO, which is awesome. I attended their CD release in Brooklyn last month and had a fantastic time. Think jazzier ATAL sans-vocals.

AS TALL AS LIONS: You Can't Take It With You
Aug 18, 2009
By Christine Griffin

http://prod1.cmj.com/articles/display_article.php?id=139548125

Long Island-based quartet As Tall As Lions' third album, You Can't Take It With You, is a soul-searching, 11-track odyssey that encapsulates the hard work of a band that has been active since 2002. A product of erratic planning, the album was made over the course of two stressful years, during which the band scrapped work they had done with one producer entirely and started over.

Interestingly, then, the loose theme of the album is disarray and a lack of "connectedness." You Can't Take It With You delves into the loss of communication in a technology-driven society. Certainly for a band that almost broke its structure multiple times before this album came out, As Tall As Lions prove extraordinary endurance, which comes through in the precision of their music.

Frontman Daniel Nigro cites artists like Pink Floyd, Radiohead, and Jeff Buckley as the Lions' strongest influences, and this album offers further proof that he is right. You Can't Take It With You presents a broad scope of vast and spiraling instrumentals and entrancing vocals. Guitar chord processions melt in on themselves in "Circles," and the percussion isn't bad either—the band spent 10 minutes straight working on perfect thump from a keyboard flight case. That's dedication. The title track does a brilliant camouflage of the Beatles' enlightening "Sun King" at its close. And "The Narrows" channels Coldplay's "Don't Panic" as it unwinds with willowy violins, steaming trumpets and a bright xylophone melody. The wispy tone of the album's chamber pop only further expands its dimensions when "We'd Been Waitin'" emphasizes a bluesy, minor-key piano line.
