For the uninitiated, relic weapons in Final Fantasy XIV are special weapons for each expansion. They have multiple stages with different appearances, with the final stage being best-in-slot for the expansion and featuring some cool visual effects in its design (with different appearances at different stages that can also be pretty cool). As they are meant to be a time-filling activity in between game updates, they usually require a long grind of various tasks to complete. A Realm Reborn, the base game, is notorious for having the longest and most tedious grinds.
After stalling out for a while on the books step (if you know, you know), I plunged back into my ARR relic grind this past week and was surprised to discover I was closer to the end than I had realized! So I dug in, and ended up completing the rest of my weapon grind in a few days.

The timeline of the Circle of Knowing, and by extension the implications for various characters and the culture of Old Sharlayan itself, has been a source of some frustration to me. I've been collecting all the lore I could find about it for a while now, some of which has raised more questions than it has answered! I haven't had much to share in terms of WIP snippets of late because I am in the outlining phase of the next Big Thing—also known as the phase where I New Game Plus a whole expac to refresh my memory of canon, wish I had started it sooner, wish I had done the same for Heavensward instead of relying so heavily on cutscene rewatches and transcripts, question my entire concept for the next Big Thing, let the Thing balloon dramatically beyond scope before I've even reached the quarter-point of the outline, question my entire life, realize I'm trying to conceptualize as one fic what should probably be at least two and that's actually where a lot of my problems were coming from, and prepare to ruthlessly pare the original project back into scope at any cost, knowing I can just write about the other stuff in other places.
Anyway, come along with me while I think out loud and figure out some stuff. (Or don't. This is probably a lot less interesting to anyone who isn't me.) Often when I am wrestling with a Writing Problem I will just open a new document in Scrivener and talk to myself in it until I figure it out. Today, among other things, we are taking a brief respite from Stormblood outlining to sort out some things post-Endwalker. As such, this is spoilery up to present canon.

"Green Grow the Rushes" (not to be confused with "Green Grow the Rushes O," a different Irish song!) is a song I heard at my cousin's house as a kid and remembered only pieces of and spent many years trying to find! I had figured out that it was Altan but it took a while to find which album the song was on.
Tracy Chapman is a classic of course. "For My Lover" is one of the first songs of hers I remember listening to (though it may not actually have been the first), on a friend's Walkman on the bus on a school trip.

In recent months, various life circumstances have pretty much forced me to slow down on a lot of things. This has its ups and downs, but one upside to all that is I’ve been doing a lot of reading. I’d been kind of struggling with my reading pace for a while, and just in general struggling to figure out where to fit reading into my daily routine, because if I don’t find a way to make things routine they tend to slip through the cracks even if they are important to me. What finally helped me break through that last year was just to try and finish a book at whatever pace worked for my routine, and not worry about setting a numeric goal, as that just felt like disincentive to start anything long.
