Tezuka and breaking rules
Jan. 11th, 2014 23:38I have a question regarding Prince of Tennis manga, vol. 1, ch. 6.
Seigaku tradition dictates that first-years aren't allowed to enter the team until summer. In chapter 6 of the manga, from Ryuuzaki-sensei and Ooishi's discussion, we find out that whether or not to uphold that tradition is up to the captain.
During that conversation, Tezuka is drawing up the tables for the next ranking tournament. Immediately after, we are shown Ryouma's match with Arai, which the regulars present on the courts are doing nothing to stop. Ooishi asks what Tezuka thinks (and the official English translation has him calling Tezuka 'Kunimitsu'!!! what? sorry, had to just point that out), and Tezuka says:
"No one is allowed to break the rules... Make them run laps." (official translation)
"I can't forgive those who break the rules... Get everyone to start running!" (scanlation)
On the next page, we are shown that Tezuka has entered Ryouma into the ranking tournament. The relevant page and the next page look like this:

So, Tezuka says he disapproves of rule-breakers. That is very clearly visually juxtaposed with Tezuka deciding to not uphold the tradition of not allowing first-years into the team.
The question is this: Do you think that, in telling Ooishi to get everyone to start running laps, Tezuka is, in fact, punishing the other players partly because he himself broke the rules?
