My Dad's been having computer issues lately and since I've always been able to fix whatever computer I have, he's had, Mom's had, or any of my friends or relatives have had, he asked me to write him up a How To Make This Shit Work When You're A Damn Engineer and STILL CAN'T DO IT Guide. LMFAO. No, he just said write him a "for dummies" manual. So, I thought I'd share it.
If You Don't Want to Deal With This, Get a Mac No, there's no need to expand on that. Simply put, Mac's are exempt.
Why I've Never Ever Paid For Someone Else to Fix My Computer Because there is no problem in existence that can happen to your computer that some tech-guy on some tech-forum hasn't already told countless people how to fix. If your system keeps doing stuff, or oh blessed day, keeps giving you a pop up like "driver display is not operating properly", you can find the fix to that problem on some, if not all, tech-forums.
Basically this is both for my own reference on what add-ons in Mozilla Firefox do what, and also I thought I'd be all expandy and anal and explain everything in excruciating detail for those of you who'd also like to customize your Mozilla experience but don't know how. Also, can I just highly encourage everyone to get Mozilla Firefox? It's awesome, I love it. WAY better than explorer. (also, if you're trying to say, play a video from stage6 and the like, it tends to play better in mozilla for some reason... in fact, stage6 WON'T play in explorer.)
You may notice that your browser may not look exactly like mine. That is because I am highly anal and I like my browser to be minimalistic, simple, and clean. Therefore, I customized it like, a LOT.
Okay, so I have a fic website, and with this other shit going down i'm really feeling the need to get this fucker up to date. But I'm so so so behind it's not even funny. Oh my god. Anybody want to help? LOL. And failing that, any ideas for how to do that easily? Like, is there a backup your lj feature somewhere?
By the way, until something changes or gets worse or better, I'm done commenting on the Six Apart shit. I'll be replying to people of course, but no new posts.
Go here to download LJ Backup. Can be used to backup personal journals as well as communities.
Here's how, in case you're confused: - Download all five files. - Open the exe program to install. - Click to open LJ Backup. - Select File->New Archive. My suggestion is to create a subfolder, I put mine in My Docs/LJ Archive. I named my file khohen1.ajs. - Fill in username/password. I opted to download comments as well. - Click finish to backup.
I started backup at 2:55am. 7 years in fandom finished backing up as of 3:06am. SO worth it. I've not backed up a community yet, let me know how that goes if someone does it.
I've helped a few people over the past while when they can't see/hear a file. Either video or audio. And sicne I just typed this up for someone with all neat and tidy links, I thought I'd go ahead and make a post about it and label it as tutorial so now I can just point to it from now on.
I'm coming from a PC view point, never have worked on a Mac, and I don't know if it makes a difference, but one of them should solve it. I'm not an expert or anything, and everything's been trial and error for me, so you might have to work several things to find your particular fix.
The first one is to download WinAmp if you don't already have it. It's a great program, and it plays every single filetype there is. It's the best invention ever, I think. LOL. Download it here.
The second solution is to download the K-Lite codec pack. If you want to read about it, go here, but if you just want to download it go here, and I'd download either the Standard or the Full. Then, bring up the media player (I think it's actually just called Media Player) and open the episode through that.
If K-Lite doesn't fix it, go here and download the codec pack all-in-one. It might make you uninstall K-Lite, I forget. But really... either that or K-Lite should fix it.
As a last ditch effort? Try VLC Player. It's kind of a crappy player, and I use it as a last resort (it plays the sound and picture fine, but the sound seems to always be muted, and there's static, and you have to go to the audio menu and select "club" to make it sound decent) but it plays most things, so. It won't be, ya know, dolby sound and wonderfulness, but it plays well enough. Download that here.
Below I asked for icon help. And there are some things I already know. I've gotten some wonderful, wonderful links to help me out, but those aren't neccessarily for beginners. Now, they're perfect for me, as I'm past the begginner stage. But someone asked me to point them to the tutorials if I could once I got them since she was a complete beginner, and so I wrote up a "okay sure, but first you should..."
So. If you want to make icons and just have NO fucking clue where to start, you might want to see this.
So I got 3 hours of sleep Wednesday night, and today? I just woke up, after... you guessed it, 3 hours of sleep! What the fuck?! Wednesday I couldn't GET to sleep, and had to wake up after 3 hours for school. But today? Today is my day OFF. Thursday = Day of Relaxation. And not only do I wake up after 3 hours of sleep, I wake up with a need to search for icon tutorials.
Seriously though, I'm gonna try to go back to bed now, but I want to put out a plea to all you good icons makers. If someone on my f'list is an experienced icon maker, has patience, and would like to help an incompetant like me out (lol, okay, not completely incompetant, but if you look at kho_designs, I'm clearly a beginner) I would love you forever.
Basically, I want ot sit down and write down all my questions about icons (ie: how do you know what colors will do what to what, how do you get this effect, how do I make this picture not yellow-toned/grainy, how are these colors so vibrant when the base was so fucking dark, etc) and get some answers. Cause I've tried navigating icon_tutorial and I'm just a 'tard I guess cause I don't get it. Tutorials are my best friend, but I can never find my questions in there. Help?
Bed? I'm looking at you. I WILL make you my bitch. Now let me sleep!
dolimir_k had a question about tables, so I made a tutorial about tables. Tables are a little confusing, at least to m e. It took me SO long to learn tables, and it's hard for me to explain it. But, I shall try my best!
Note: I have more to talk about, but I'm going out with my Mom for dinner, so I'll pick back up where I left off when I get back. Mainly I want to talk about borders and background colors for the table. Anyway, when I get back.
Before I go to bed (which I was going to do an hour ago, lol) I thought I'd post this. See, I'm a nerd. Those of you who know me probably know that about me. I'm proud of my nerddom. I bask in my dorkness. It's very fun, once you embrace it. But anyway. The thing is, I'm a positively anally retentive nerd when it comes to html, websites, and lj layouts. I love that shit. Love It. Taught myself, through trial and error, examining other people's codes, and tutorials.
And what I noticed is that generally? Tutorials SUCK as far as telling you how to do something in an easy to understand way. THAT'S why so few understand it. Not because they can't comprehend it, but because the tutorials are incomprehensible! So, I made a few, because as you know, I change my layout a lot. Several people have thought to ask me questions. And, since I bask in my dorkdom, I happily answered. And then, I made tutorials. I love to help, really. Just ask foxxcub and spookyville.
But, people in general don't like to bother people. They don't like to pop on and go "hey... do this for me... help me out!" I don't blame you, some people are twats about that. But I like this stuff, nerdly is fun. So I'm gonna give you the links to all of my tutorials, and if you have any thing you'd like me to tutorialize (because I swear? coding my tutorials is half the fun, THAT'S how nerdly I am) or questions you'd like to ask that those tutorials didn't answer? Ask away!
Kay. I hope at least one person has a suggestion for a tutorial. I love making that shit. LOL. (As far as icon tutorials, not so much, but I could direct you to a few wonderful ones!) Nighty night for now!
A while back I made a tutorial called Basic Guide to HTML. If you don't know how to write html code at all, this is for you. How to make links, how to post pictures, h ow to link pictures, how to code a webpage, etc. It's not that in depth, but... It pretty well covers all the majors. I also made a Basic Guide to Live Journal Specific Codes. Then I did How to Code an Image Map. And next, tweaking basic things in style 2 paid accounts, Tweaking Style Two Layouts such as headers, etc. I have a few other tutorials, or links to other people's tutorials, over here.
Well, I recently got a question on my basic guide to html on how to insert a header and change the navigational links for a free account. I'm paid, so I usually go with the customized styles or with style 2 layout, but I have screwed with s-1 a bit, and have learned a few things about layouts for style 1 in free accounts. So? I bring to you:
Okay. Want to know how I got my style to look like this? Here's a tutorial for tweaking Opal. pamelajoy made it, and I tweaked it, and now I show you how to tweak it from my code. I have a headache now, but... hopefully I explained it well enough that YOU won't have one? LOL. If you have any questions, ask away. If you can't get it to work, ask away. If you've tried and just can't get it, tell me what you want yours to be color coded as, and I'll see what I can do. You have to have tried though. I made it as easy as I could.
I thought I'd let you guys in on how I made my site look like this, cause I'm quite happy with it. And I made a tutorial because it's just fun. Cause I'm a weirdo geek like that. I tried to write it in such a way that even the non-html-savvy would get it, but if you know html you'll be able to tweak more. I wrote a tutorial on html a while back, the Basic Guide to HTML, you might want to look it over.
I responded to a question in everything_lj (a WONDERFUL community) by elephino on how to write image map code by hand, and carrie64 (the moderator/creator of the community) asked me to put it in it's own entry so she could mark it for a tutorial. This made me very happy!
An image map is what I used on this page, if you don't know it by name alone.
This is a basic guide to html tutorial I worked up for a very very helpful community for LJ Free Account Overrides, __ask. I try to cover as much as I can, but I'm going from gut and memory, so I can't cover any and all things. If you have questions, or want expansion on something, reply and I will try to answer it, or link you to someone who can.
If anything is incorrect, or you saw a better way, please let me know. I love to learn new stuff. This will be updated as I remember things to include, or as comments spark suggestions, etc.
I'm writing this to help a friend, but feel free to peruse it yourself. First of all, get your moodtheme. LOL. That's easy enough. There's plenty of places, but my favorite is moody_girls. Second off, make sure you have a paid account. Free users can't have personal mood themes. Now? You're ready to learn...
