Driving through Liberty City, you're struck not by the ever changing bird's eye view perspective and bold outlines of the cell shaded graphics, but by the amount of activity and detail in the game. Every building looks different and there's a wonderful variety of architecture that makes your journeys through the city far from monotonous as you drive underneath train tracks and bridge I -beams. Mailboxes, light posts and store signs have all been individually rendered and react when cars careen into them. Just as impressive are the numbers of pedestrians, all of whom go about their daily business on separate AI routines. You'll also notice the size of the city. While I didn't get the sense it was as large as the city in Grand Theft Auto IV, it still had every borough and many of the same landmarks. The living breathing world of GTA IV has found a way to exist on the DS on its own terms.
Head on over to the official site for the trailer and more information. Make sure to check out the sixteen brand new multiplayer screenshots as well over at GTA 'Hood. The episode releases next Tuesday on Xbox LIVE for $19.99!

The game employs the same story structure as previous GTA games, with the player performing various tasks for crime bosses. The scale of money, however, is different for this game. You won't be handed megabucks for your story missions and to afford weaponry and other equipment, you'll have to occasionally dabble in side missions (the ambulance and vigilante stuff from other games in the series) as well as the new drug trade feature.
We are excited to announce that for the first time ever, starting Tuesday, February 17 at 9:00 am(PST), Xbox LIVE multiplayer service usually reserved for Xbox LIVE Gold members will be completely free of charge for LIVE members while playing Grand Theft Auto IV or The Lost and Damned -- the first exclusive downloadable expansion episode on Xbox 360. The Lost & Damned's story runs in tandem to the main plot of GTA 4 and occasionally overlaps it, but it's very different in terms of style and pacing. Rather than slowly exploring Liberty City through the eyes of an immigrant with a helpful series of tutorial missions (as in GTA 4), players step into the shoes of a lifelong native and are hurled, all guns blazing, straight into the action.
In the meantime, GTA fans are eagerly awaiting the release of The Lost And Damned downloadable content for Xbox 360 consoles next month. The first of two planned episodes of fresh content set in the games Liberty City environment, Houser says the building blocks for the downloadable missions was in place very early on in GTA IVs development.
[It was] around that time, we were also doing Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories. We realised that actually it's fun to re-do stuff with the same maps and it's fun playing these games with different characters but we could go a lot further with this.
We began to discuss the idea of having stories that ran concurrently rather than as prequels or sequels. But this was long before GTA IV was built out properly while it was in the relatively early design stage because we needed the stories and the narratives to cross over. As that was taking shape, there were a couple instances where we adjusted a few things although very little - in order to make them fit in properly.
