Bio

We are NLnet foundation. We support organisations and people who contribute to an open internet for all. If you are working on a project that helps fix the internet through open hardware, open software, open standards, open science and open data, we invite you to apply for a grant.
We're lead of the @NGIZero coalition which runs several programmes to fund those who are building free and open source technologies for the Next Generation Internet.
After an historical contribution to the early internet in Europe in the 1980's, we've been financially supporting the open internet since 1997.
We like hex stickers.

Our colleague @ronnylam gave an interview about running Free and Open Source in (large) organizations.

Interest in FOSS is growing as awareness about the importance of digital autonomy increases. Ronny provides insight in what CIO's and IT managers need to know about the open source ecosystem.

(The interview is in Ronny's capacity as board member of @dosba (Dutch Open Source Business Alliance), and not with his NLnet hat on.)

Article is in Dutch:

The FSFE published an informative article about the copyrightability of LLM-generated code. Those insights are now turned into a webinar.

Gabriel Ku Wei Bin, Legal Programme Manager at FSFE, will talk about copyright,  a foundational pillar of the legal framework that supports Free Software, and LLMs, followed by a Q&A.

Time: October 29, 13.00-14.30 CET.

We have two new open calls for financial and practical support to free and open source technology R&D.
This summer we transitioned from the Next Generation Internet to the Open Internet Stack, both initiatives of the European Commission.
Much will stay the same. The granting mechanism has the same offerings and requirements as before, and the new programs will continue to offer a wide range of freely available support services.
Deadline for applications is November 3.

On August 8, a new batch of 60 free and open source projects was selected for the NGI Zero Commons Fund. This is the outcome of the fund's 11th round.
Here is a description of all 60 projects: https://nlnet.nl/news/2026/20260808-60-new-projects.html

On August 11, five newly selected projects were announced in the NGI Taler and NGI Fediversity pilot programs. You can find them here: https://nlnet.nl/news/2026/20260811-5-new-projects.html

We're looking forward to see the results of these important contributions to the digital commons.

After two decades of a steady rhythm of bimonthly open calls on the first day of every even month of the year, NLnet will change deadlines to the third day of every odd month.
If you are interested to learn why - and how this relates to FOSDEM, summer, and Janus, the god of beginnings and transitions - you can read our longer announcement here: https://nlnet.nl/news/2026/20260803-phaseshift.html
The new sequence will commence on September 3.

Nick, Eddie, Jamie, and Adam of AMS-IX made it to the finish of the Nijmeegse Vierdaagse and received the traditional Gladiolus flower.

The team from the Amsterdam Internet Exchange turned this  four day walking event into a fundraiser for an Open Internet For All. They chose NLnet to be the recipient of the proceeds.

We're very honored they picked us and we thank them and the donors. Here's picture of the finish, with the AMS-IX and NLnet logos  happily together on the tailor-made T-shirt.

The second article in our series on digital autonomy looks into the open source software supply chain.

Author Jeffrey McGuire talks to Armijn Hemel (DeviceCode) & Philippe Ombredanne (AboutCode). Both have a long track record building tools to manage the FOSS supply chain.

Read "The Answer Was Already on the Shelf: How public money built defenses for open source software (way) before the law required them" on the @linuxmagazine website.

Today at 16.00 CEST we'll have another open office hour. If you have any questions about applying for funding you can ask them. Here is a link to the Matrix channel and an explanation how it works:
https://nlnet.nl/officehour/
You can already start adding questions to the Etherpad.

Edwin & Nicholas from AMS-IX will be taking on the 4Daagse (Four Day Marches) walking 50km a day. They're hiking for a charitable goal: an open internet for all. And they picked us to donate the proceeds to!
The Amsterdam Internet Exchange plays a crucial role at the core of the internet as one of the largest hubs for internet traffic in the world. So it's a great honour to be picked by such an internet icon for their charity drive.

If you want to support the walkers: https://www.ams-ix.net/ams/events/4days-marches

67 projects will receive NGI0 grants to support the great work they are doing to keep our internet fair, open, resilient and secure with us, the users, at the center. Together they are fixing the internet across the entire technology stack, from open hardware to end user applications. Each project is free/libre/open source meaning everyone can use, study, share and modify them. A true digital commons.

Come over to meet the projects!

As NLnet transitions from #NGI to the Open Internet Stack (OIS), we'll temporarily pause our bimonthly open calls, with the exception of NGI Taler & Fediversity.
In order to take stock of a decade of the Next Generation Internet initiative, we'll halt our open calls. After the summer the regular application process will re-open with 3 new programs under the new #OIS umbrella. Ongoing projects can continue their important work uninterrupted.
