Variety is a design principle that embraces diversity of structure, rules, look and feel. This is often presented as the opposite of design unity -- the sense that things belong together. However, there is nothing inconsistent between variety and unity. In other words, you can create a sense of unity with variety. Sophisticated works that achieve elegance usually demonstrate both. The following are some basic approaches to variety.
Structure
Variation in a structure such as patterns that are complex or slightly irregular.
Elements
The use of dissimilar elements.
Theme
While elements may be dissimilar in many respects they can be tied together with a theme. For example, they can conform to a color scheme or they can all feel mechanical or organic.
Asymmetry
Asymmetrical balance where the two sides of a design are dissimilar.
